If Risk of Rain 2 crashes, hangs, or will not launch on a Windows PC, start with a restart, remove mods temporarily, and verify the game files in Steam. Then follow the branch that matches what you see: a Steamworks error, a Unity crash, a loading-screen hang, or controller-specific trouble. No single change is a proven fix for every PC configuration.
Start with the symptom and the safest checks
Before changing settings, note whether the game exits immediately, shows a black screen, hangs at the disclaimer or loading screen, displays an error, or crashes after reaching gameplay. Record when the issue began and whether you recently changed the game, drivers, mods, overlays, or Windows.
- Restart Windows and Steam. Steam recommends beginning its general launch-failure steps after restarting the computer. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide.
- Test without mods. If you use mods, disable or uninstall them and try launching the unmodded game. 2K specifically recommends uninstalling all mods and verifying the files for the Steam version.
- Verify the game files. In Steam, open Library → Risk of Rain 2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam says this can take several minutes. If one or more files fail to validate, that can be normal when local configuration files are not replaced; see Steam’s file verification instructions.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver. Install available updates, restart Windows after a graphics-driver update, then try the game again. Steam includes operating-system and driver updates among its general launch checks.
- Temporarily close overlays and capture software. Disable nonessential overlays and recording apps, then retry. For performance problems, 2K names MSI Afterburner, Steam Overlay, Discord, Bandicam, and FRAPS as examples. If the game starts, turn these back on one at a time to identify a conflict.
These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes. Steam notes that launch failures can have different causes across hardware and software configurations.
Check whether the PC meets Steam’s listed requirements
Compare your system with the requirements on the Risk of Rain 2 Steam listing before assuming hardware is the cause. Meeting the listing does not guarantee compatibility or establish why the game is failing.

Steam’s client supports Windows 10 and later; Steam states that support began January 1, 2024. This is a Steam client statement, not a separate guarantee that every PC configuration will run the game.
If the error says “Failed to start Steamworks Integration Error”
2K Support’s Risk of Rain 2: Technical Troubleshooting, published November 11, 2024, says an outdated mod file or VPN is a likely culprit for this exact error. First remove outdated mods and try launching without a VPN, changing one variable at a time. If you still see the error, return to the general checks above and note whether it persists with a clean, unmodded launch.

If a Unity crash appears
For a Unity crash error, 2K lists several targeted checks. Try them individually so you can identify whether one changes the result:
- Disconnect extra monitors and retry.
- If you have an AMD Radeon graphics card, disable Radeon Anti-Lag and retry.
- Open Task Manager and check for Unity Crash Handler. If it is still running after the game crashes, end that task before trying to launch again.
These checks apply to the matching Unity-crash symptom; they are not general advice to change monitor or graphics settings for every launch failure.

If the game hangs at startup or the disclaimer screen
Try the current Steam and 2K steps first: restart, test without mods, verify the files, and update Windows and graphics drivers. A developer-pinned Hopoo Games FAQ from March 28, 2019, last edited April 4, 2019, describes an older, symptom-specific possibility: an invalid Windows time zone associated with an EARLY_ACCESS_DISCLAIMER screen or certain untranslated text strings. Because that advice is from 2019, treat it as a legacy check rather than a general fix; verify that Windows has the correct time zone only if those symptoms match.
The same old FAQ mentions reinstalling Visual C++ 2015 and, for startup crashes, updating graphics drivers, disabling antivirus, restarting, then reinstalling. Prefer the more recent game-specific and Steam guidance above; do not disable antivirus as a routine first step. The FAQ also discusses replacing profile contents to repair save corruption. That can overwrite save data, so do not replace profile files unless you have a backup and understand the risk.

If the problem is tied to a controller
Use this branch only if the issue involves controller input—for example, the camera points down, input feels delayed, or the mouse will not stay bound. 2K recommends checking third-party controller software such as vJoy or HOTAS tools. Its guidance says third-party controller polling should be set to 125 Hz. For PlayStation controllers in Steam, open Steam → Settings → Controller → External Gamepad Settings and try turning off Enable Steam Input for PlayStation controllers. These are controller troubleshooting steps, not general crash fixes.
When to contact support
If the game still fails after the relevant checks, contact support through Steam’s Risk of Rain 2 support page. Include the exact error or last screen reached, Windows version, GPU and driver version, and whether mods, a VPN, overlays, extra monitors, or controller software are involved. This information helps distinguish a game-file or software conflict from a symptom-specific issue.
