Yes. Roblox requires users to complete an age check before using chat in regions where chat is available. The requirement is for communication features—not a blanket requirement to verify your age just to play Roblox. Users can complete a facial age estimation; users aged 13 or older can also verify with a government-issued photo ID. What chat is available afterward depends on age, region, account settings, and parental permissions.
What Roblox announced—and what “globally” means
On January 7, 2026, Roblox announced that it was expanding its chat age-check requirement, first introduced in select regions in early December, to every region where chat is available. Roblox said prompts would reach users over the following week. This does not mean chat itself is available in every market; the rollout applies wherever the feature is offered. Roblox’s announcement describes the change as a way to limit communication between adults and children younger than 16, with users generally able to chat within their own and neighboring age groups. The exact groups and rules can vary by region and product.
Do you need an age check just to play Roblox?
No. The requirement described here is for chat and other age-restricted features, not for Roblox play as a whole. Roblox says an unchecked user cannot chat. Its support guidance also describes a transition period for game access in most regions; users without an age check may have more limited access to games. The scope and availability of that access depend on Roblox’s current regional and account rules. Roblox’s age-check support page and its family guidance explain the distinction.
Ways to complete the age check
| Method | Who can use it | What it involves | What Roblox says about the process |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | Users who are offered the process, subject to regional requirements | Complete the age-estimation flow in Roblox. | Roblox says images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted after processing. | Government-issued photo ID verification | Users aged 13 or older | Submit a government-issued photo ID through Roblox’s verification process. | Roblox lists this as an age-check option for eligible users. Regional requirements may affect which route is available. Source: Roblox Support. |
If Roblox’s estimate does not match the user’s expected age, it may require another check. A user who believes the estimate is wrong may be able to use ID verification if eligible. Roblox also documents parent-linked correction options for children. The available correction route depends on age and circumstances; consult the age-check help page for current steps. Users under 9 need parent permission to enable chat, and regional parental-consent requirements may also apply.

What an age check changes about chat
An age check does not unlock unrestricted communication. Roblox says it uses age groups to limit who can communicate with whom; its support documentation lists groups including 5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Those categories do not guarantee that every chat feature is available to every account. Permissions can differ by age, region, account settings, parental permission, and whether users are trusted friends. Roblox’s Safety FAQs cover Experience Chat, Direct Chat, the Chat tab, and Voice Chat; voice availability is regional. Trusted friends can enable communication across age groups.
Parents can link accounts and manage relevant controls. To understand a specific child’s options, check their age group, region, the kind of chat involved, and the account’s parental settings rather than assuming that completing an age check enables every communication feature.

What Roblox has reported about uptake and accuracy
Roblox reported that 45% of its 144 million global daily active users had completed an age check, based on checks completed as of the seven days ended January 31, 2026. Among age-checked daily active users, the company reported 35% younger than 13, 38% aged 13–17, and 27% aged 18 or older; Roblox noted that these cohort figures could change as more users complete checks. These are company-reported figures, not an independent count. Roblox published them on February 5, 2026.
Roblox’s January 2026 announcement said the age-estimation models had a Mean Absolute Error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18, based on testing by the U.K.’s Age Check Certification Scheme. That number is Roblox’s report of the testing result; it is not a guarantee that an individual estimate will be accurate to within 1.4 years.

What families should keep in mind
Age checks are one layer of safety controls, not a promise that every harmful interaction or piece of content will be prevented. Roblox describes filters, monitoring, reporting tools, and age limits, while acknowledging that no system is perfect. Its Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman and Vice President of User and Discovery Product Rajiv Bhatia wrote in the January 7 announcement: “While no system (including Roblox) is perfect and we cannot prevent all objectionable content from appearing on Roblox, we do our best to detect and moderate content that violates our Community Standards and make it easy for users to report anything they do spot.” This is Roblox’s statement about its own safeguards, not an independent assessment.
Roblox announced global availability of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts on June 16, 2026, adding age-based content and parental settings. These account categories and controls are part of Roblox’s evolving safety system; their availability and details may vary as policies change. Families should review the current Roblox Safety FAQs and talk with children about what to do if a chat or interaction feels unsafe.
