In Roblox Studio, Avatar Settings let you set experience-wide defaults for player characters, including their appearance, scale, accessories, collision behavior, and animations. Use them when you want a consistent policy for players across a whole experience; use HumanoidDescription when a script needs to customize a particular player character or NPC.
What Avatar Settings do in Roblox Studio
Avatar Settings configure player character models across an experience. The controls cover character appearance and behavior, with a preview in the workspace so you can inspect the result. Roblox describes the feature in its July 2025 announcement and documents appearance options in its Character appearance guide.
The settings are aimed at a global policy, not at modifying one character in isolation. They do not apply to a custom StarterCharacter workflow, according to Roblox’s launch announcement.
Choose a preset based on your game’s needs
The announcement described two contrasting preset goals. The names and exact interface may have changed since launch, so check the installed Studio version before following a menu path or relying on a particular label.

These are trade-offs rather than a universal best-versus-worst choice. A competitive course or tightly tuned obstacle may benefit from consistent dimensions; a social or role-play experience may benefit from letting players retain their own look. Verify how the selected policy interacts with your collision setup and scripts before publishing.
Where to find Avatar Settings and preview changes
Roblox’s launch announcement described Avatar Settings as a non-modal Studio window with a preview lineup. It also said that, at launch, saving the place to Roblox was required to access the controls. The announcement does not establish the current menu location or whether that access workflow remains unchanged, so use the installed Studio interface as the authority for current navigation.

When the controls are available, use the preview to inspect the overall result before publishing. The announcement states that avatar type selection is accessible through a menu in the Avatar Settings UI, but it does not establish that menu’s present-day placement.
Make avatars the same size across an experience
If the goal is a consistent player height, the Consistent Gameplay preset was described as standardizing avatar height and using a single box collider. Custom Scale is another setting mentioned in Roblox’s announcement. Because scale changes can affect code that reads character height, review any calculations that use avatar dimensions, including raycast origins or distances.

Roblox warns that scale updates may occur after a script runs. If your code needs a reliable height for an operation, use the relevant settings height value directly rather than assuming the Humanoid’s scale has already updated. Test the timing in the specific spawn flow your experience uses.
Avatar Settings or HumanoidDescription?
Use the Studio settings for experience-wide player-character defaults. Use HumanoidDescription for scripted, character-specific appearance work, such as customizing an NPC, building a dynamic spawn flow, or deriving an appearance from a user or outfit.

Roblox’s appearance documentation describes properties that can be changed with HumanoidDescription, including scale, accessories, classic clothing, body parts, body colors, and animations. It also describes creating a description from a character, outfit ID, or user ID, then applying it to a character or as part of a player spawn workflow.
When changing an existing Humanoid’s appearance, Roblox recommends starting with its current applied description using Humanoid:GetAppliedDescription(). The documentation warns that changing character assets at the same time as changing a HumanoidDescription can produce undefined behavior. For a single NPC or player-specific result, this programmatic route is more appropriate than changing the global experience policy.

Check scripts and collisions before publishing
Roblox says existing experiences remain backwards compatible by default, but opting into some Avatar Settings can require script changes. In particular, the Single Collider option described at launch can add an invisible CollisionPart under HumanoidRootPart at runtime. Scripts that assume body parts such as HumanoidRootPart, UpperTorso, or LowerTorso are collidable—or that expect an exact character hierarchy—may need adjustment.
- Test movement, hit detection, and physics interactions with the collision option you intend to use.
- Inspect scripts that check whether a particular body part is collidable or search for a fixed set of character parts.
- Check height-dependent calculations during character spawning, especially when using Custom Scale or Consistent Gameplay.
- Test the actual character setup if your experience uses custom starter characters; Avatar Settings do not affect that workflow.
The July 2025 announcement also noted that some UGC bodies could appear smaller than expected because of workarounds around validation requirements. That was a launch-era caveat, not evidence that every such body behaves that way today; verify any specific asset in your current Studio project.
What is established—and what to verify in your Studio version
Roblox’s documentation establishes the distinction between global Avatar Settings and appearance changes made with HumanoidDescription. The July 2025 announcement provides launch-era detail about presets, previewing, collision behavior, and some compatibility risks. Those sources do not establish the latest Studio version’s exact interface labels, every current option value, or the present status of every feature described at launch. Treat menu placement and launch-specific behavior as version-dependent and confirm them in Studio.
