Roblox announced the global chat requirement on January 7, 2026, after beginning a rollout in selected regions in early December 2025. The goal is to reduce inappropriate adult–child contact and make communication more age-appropriate. The system is designed to limit ordinary communication between adults and children younger than 16; it does not mean that all adult–minor contact has been eliminated or that Roblox is risk-free.
Roblox’s safety-policy timeline
- Early December 2025: Age checks for chat began rolling out in selected regions.
- January 7, 2026: Roblox announced that age checks required for chat were rolling out globally wherever chat was available.
- 2026: Roblox continued expanding age-based account categories, parental controls, and age-related communication restrictions.
- April 15, 2026: A Nevada settlement recorded safety-related commitments and a $12 million settlement involving Roblox. The settlement should not be treated as proof that every allegation made against the company was adjudicated as true.
- April 30, 2026: Roblox’s updated privacy policy took effect. It included changes involving personalized and non-personalized advertising and information sharing with authorities. Those privacy-policy changes are related context, but they are separate from the facial age-estimation rollout.
How Roblox’s age check works
Roblox says users can complete an age check through either facial age estimation or ID verification. These are different processes: facial age estimation attempts to estimate an age from an image or video, while ID verification uses an identity document.

After the check, Roblox assigns the account to an age group. Its current support information lists groups including:
- Under 9
- 9–12
- 13–15
- 16–17
- 18 and older
Roblox cautions that age groups, controls, and feature availability can vary by region and product. A user should therefore rely on the settings shown on their own account rather than assume that another country’s rules apply to them.
An account’s stated birthday is no longer sufficient for communication access in the same way it was before the rollout. An account that does not complete the required age check may still be usable for games and other platform features, but chat-related features can be unavailable.

The system is intended to let users communicate primarily with people in their own age group or nearby age groups. Roblox’s stated objective is to prevent children younger than 16 from communicating through ordinary chat with adults.
There are several qualifications:
- Trusted Connections: Roblox says people who know one another may have limited exceptions through its Trusted Connections system.
- Parental consent: Consent affects some communication settings, particularly for younger accounts.
- Regional differences: The exact options depend on the user’s location, age category, product, and the features enabled in that market.
- Other contact tools: Chat is only one way users can interact. Messages, follows, private-server invitations, and related contact settings also matter.
This is best understood as an age-banding and access-control system, not as a guarantee that a child will never encounter an older user. Roblox continues to rely on filtering, reporting, automated detection, human review, and parental supervision alongside age checks.
Parental consent and voice chat
Roblox’s current support guidance says that users between 5 and 9 need parental consent to enable experience chat. Users under 16 need parental consent for direct chat.
Age-checked users who are 13 or older may receive voice-chat controls in regions where voice chat is supported. Phone verification is no longer a valid route to voice-chat access under the updated system. Completing an age check does not automatically mean that every communication feature will appear: regional availability, account settings, parental consent, and Roblox’s eligibility rules still apply.

Roblox has introduced age-based account categories intended to make the platform’s expectations and defaults clearer:
- Roblox Kids: Intended for younger users and designed around stricter defaults and greater parental involvement.
- Roblox Select: Intended approximately for users aged 9–15, with age-based differences in what users can play, who they can communicate with, and how much parental oversight is available.
These labels should not be treated as identical account products in every country or on every Roblox surface. Roblox’s own documentation says age groups and feature availability can vary by region and product.
For younger accounts, Roblox describes communication controls that can be enabled or managed through a linked parental account. The company’s Creator Hub documentation also sets a higher accountability bar for creators whose experiences are available to users under 16. In practice, the policy shift affects creators as well as players: experiences aimed at children and teenagers must operate within stricter expectations about content, communication, and safety.
What children can still do without an age check?
An age check is primarily a gateway to communication and certain age-sensitive features. It is not necessarily a requirement to use Roblox at all. Depending on the account, region, product, and content-maturity settings, a user may still be able to play experiences or use other platform functions without access to chat.

Access also depends on the maturity rating and restrictions attached to an experience. A child should not be assumed to have access to every game simply because the account can log in. Conversely, a parent should not assume that disabling one chat function controls every possible interaction channel.
Roblox’s family controls should be reviewed as a group: communication, contacts, content maturity, private-server invitations, follows, messages, and spending limits all contribute to the account’s safety profile.
Other safety layers Roblox uses
Filtered chat
Filtered chat remains the standard for most Roblox interactions. Roblox says its filters are designed to block inappropriate material, personal information, and instructions that encourage users to move conversations off-platform.
Filtering is useful, but it is not perfect. A filter may miss context, coded language, or an interaction that becomes harmful over time. That is why Roblox also provides reporting tools and encourages users to report suspicious or abusive behavior rather than relying on the filter alone.
Controls over contact
Roblox provides settings to limit or disable chat, messages, follows, private-server invitations, and related contact options. Parents should check these individually. Turning off experience chat does not necessarily answer every question about who can follow the child, send messages, invite them to a private server, or appear in the same experience.
Moderation and reporting
Roblox describes a layered moderation system that includes automated filtering, proactive monitoring, human review, user reporting, and escalation of signals associated with critical harm. The company also says it cooperates with law enforcement and continues to invest in trust-and-safety staff and technical systems.
These measures reduce risk; they do not eliminate it. Families should still know how to block and report an account, preserve relevant evidence, and escalate a serious threat through appropriate local authorities.
No images or videos in ordinary user interactions
Roblox says users cannot exchange images or videos through chat or one-to-one user interactions. That restriction narrows some forms of abuse, but it does not prevent manipulation, grooming, requests to move to another service, or harmful text and voice conversations.

Restricted experiences are for age-checked adults
Roblox’s Restricted Content Policy says restricted experiences are for users who are 18 or older and age checked. Restricted access does not suspend the Community Standards. Users and creators can still face account or content enforcement for violations inside those experiences.
Age checks therefore affect content access as well as communication. An adult age check is not a permission slip for behavior that violates Roblox’s rules, and a mature-content label does not make an experience suitable for a child.
What Roblox says about privacy and accuracy
Roblox says that facial-estimation images and video are securely processed by its vendor, Persona, and deleted immediately after processing. It also says that users can appeal an inaccurate result through alternative methods, including ID verification. For a child’s account, Roblox says parental controls can allow a parent to update the child’s age.

Those are Roblox’s stated practices, not an independent privacy audit. Families should read the applicable Roblox privacy information for their region before submitting a face scan or identity document.
Roblox has also reported that the age-estimation technology used by its vendor was tested and certified by third-party laboratories. The company cited a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18 in testing. That is a vendor-performance figure reported by Roblox; it does not guarantee accurate classification for every person, lighting condition, device, country, or age group.
If an account is placed in the wrong age group, the user should use Roblox’s available appeal route rather than repeatedly creating accounts or entering a false birthday. A false age can create additional account and safety problems.

- Review chat permissions. Check experience chat, direct chat, and voice-chat eligibility separately. For younger users, confirm whether parental consent is required or enabled.
- Audit contacts and connections. Review friends, Trusted Connections, followers, and anyone who can contact or invite the child.
- Limit private-server invitations. Private servers can change who shares an environment with the child, so check their invitation settings rather than focusing only on public chat.
- Set content-maturity limits. Make sure the permitted experience maturity level matches the child’s age and your family’s expectations.
- Review spending controls. Configure purchase permissions and spending limits, and check the account’s transaction history.
- Learn the reporting process. Show the child how to block and report a user. For serious incidents, save usernames, timestamps, messages, and other available evidence.
- Discuss off-platform requests. Roblox says its filters are designed to block instructions to move conversations elsewhere, but children should still know that requests for private contact details, secrecy, photos, or another messaging app are warning signs.
- Keep supervision age-appropriate. Controls work better when paired with regular conversations about manipulation, grooming, privacy, and how to ask for help.
Third-party family-safety software may help a caregiver organize device-level supervision, but it cannot override Roblox’s age check, change Roblox’s account classification, or replace Roblox’s own communication settings. Parents should treat any such tool as an additional layer, not a bypass or guarantee.
What these changes do—and do not—promise
Roblox’s new approach is a meaningful move away from relying mainly on self-declared ages. Age checks, age-banded chat, parental consent, stricter account categories, content restrictions, and layered moderation can reduce the chance that children encounter inappropriate contact.
They cannot guarantee that every age estimate is correct, that every harmful message will be caught, or that a child will never be exposed to risk. The practical safety strategy remains layered: use Roblox’s controls, supervise appropriately, encourage reporting, and keep communication open about online behavior.
