Players and parents have reported incorrect age classifications, including cases where a parent’s face caused a child’s account to be placed in an adult age band. Journalists also documented alleged evasion methods and developer reports of sharply reduced chat use.
The deeper problem is that age classification is not the same as identity verification, behavioral screening, or grooming prevention. Roblox’s system may reduce some unrestricted adult–child contact while still leaving serious safety and moderation questions unresolved.

What Roblox’s age check actually does
Roblox began requiring age checks for chat globally in January 2026. The check is primarily a communication gate, not a requirement to use Roblox altogether. Users can generally complete a video-selfie facial age estimation or, for eligible users aged 13 and older, use government-ID verification. Parents can also use linked parental controls to correct a child’s birthday or age result.
Roblox identifies Persona as the facial-estimation vendor and says the submitted image or video is deleted after processing. The company may request another check when other signals suggest that an estimate is inaccurate. These claims describe Roblox’s stated system and data practices; they are not independent audits of the complete process.
#1 Best Overall
The platform assigns users to age bands:
- Under 9
- 9–12
- 13–15
- 16–17
- 18–20
- 21+
Depending on the feature, users can chat with people in the same or similar age groups or with approved Trusted Connections. Chat in experiences is off by default for children under 9 unless a parent provides consent after an age check, while chat outside experiences remains restricted for users under 13. Roblox’s original policy announcement explains the rollout and restrictions in detail: Roblox’s age-check announcement.
This is better described as age assurance or age estimation than as one universal identity-verification system. A correct estimate can place an account in the right category without proving who is using it or whether that person is safe.
Why Roblox introduced mandatory checks
Roblox says self-declared birthdays were not enough to apply meaningful age-based communication controls. The company introduced age checks amid continuing criticism over child safety, alleged grooming, lawsuits and investigations, and growing regulatory pressure concerning children’s online services.

What went wrong
Users were reportedly placed in the wrong age bands
WIRED reported numerous complaints from players and parents who said facial estimation assigned them to the wrong age group. Reported examples included adults classified as teenagers and children allegedly placed in adult categories.
Roblox’s SEC filing independently acknowledges that its age-check methodology can misclassify users and that inaccurate classification can expose people to age-inappropriate features or content. That confirms the possibility of the failure, but neither the filing nor the reported complaints establishes a platform-wide error rate.
The parent-and-child edge case
One especially serious failure is not necessarily a model-accuracy problem. A parent may complete the check while logged into a child’s account, reasonably believing that their own face is needed for parental consent. The system may instead interpret the parent’s apparent age as evidence about the account holder and place the child’s account in the 21+ band.
WIRED reported that Roblox acknowledged cases like this and was working on solutions. The incident exposes a product-design question: does the interface clearly distinguish between verifying a parent’s authority, estimating the child’s age, and changing the account’s age classification? A safety system can fail even when its underlying model performs as designed if the account and consent flows are confusing.
Reported bypasses and account resale
WIRED reported demonstrations involving images, avatars, celebrity photographs, and facial alterations, along with age-verified Roblox accounts offered on eBay. These are evidence of reported attack or evasion methods—not proof that every bypass works reliably or remained possible after later updates.
Roblox’s corporate filing nevertheless confirms the broader concern: the company says users have evaded its systems and that age-check technology can misclassify users. A verified account can also be shared, compromised, sold, or used by someone other than the person who completed the check. Age assurance does not automatically solve account ownership.
Legitimate chat reportedly fell
Roblox is a social platform as well as a game-distribution platform. When players lose chat, the impact reaches cooperative games, role-playing experiences, creator communities, family communication, accessibility, and developer engagement.
WIRED cited one developer who reported that text-chat use in a game fell from approximately 85% to 36%. That is a developer-reported example, not a Roblox-wide measurement, but it illustrates the potential cost of applying a platform-wide gate to social features.
How accurate is the facial estimation?
Roblox says Persona’s technology achieved a 1.4-year mean absolute error for users younger than 18 in testing certified by the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme. Mean absolute error is an average deviation. It does not mean every person will be within 1.4 years, and it does not show how errors vary by age, skin tone, gender presentation, lighting, disability, camera quality, or other conditions.
In an Associated Press report, Roblox’s chief safety officer said the system can estimate many users between roughly 5 and 25 within one or two years while acknowledging that some people fall outside the usual pattern. AP also reported that disputed results can be corrected through ID verification or parental consent.
A one- or two-year error matters when categories are narrow and determine whether a user can communicate with children, teenagers, or adults. The important questions are not simply whether the model is “accurate,” but how often it produces false-adult and false-minor results, how those errors are distributed, and how easily users can recover.

Why age checks cannot solve grooming alone
Age classification may limit some forms of unrestricted adult–minor contact, but it does not establish that:
- a verified adult is safe;
- a verified minor is the person using the account;
- an account has not been transferred or compromised;
- same-band communication is harmless;
- a conversation will remain on Roblox; or
- moderation will detect harmful behavior.
That last point is particularly important. A May 2026 academic preprint analyzing approximately two million Roblox chat messages reported that messages involving grooming, sexualization of minors, bullying, harassment, violence, self-harm, and sensitive-information sharing escaped current moderation. The paper is a preprint, and it evaluates chat moderation—not the accuracy of Roblox’s age-estimation model—but it shows why age gating should be treated as one safety layer rather than a solution to grooming.
Roblox says it monitors text and voice communication, uses automated moderation, prohibits image and video sharing in chat, and filters communications according to age and connection type. Those are company claims about system design and policy, not independent proof that harmful contact has declined.
Roblox’s defense
Roblox’s argument is that self-reported ages were inadequate and that the platform needs a reliable age signal to apply communication controls. It also describes the system as multilayered, says facial-check media is deleted after processing, and points to ID verification and parental routes for disputed results.

This is a company-reported adoption figure, not an independent audit and not evidence of accuracy, safety outcomes, or user satisfaction. Roblox’s February announcement provides the company’s figure and framing.
The timeline also matters. Roblox announced the policy on November 18, 2025; began enforcement in selected markets including Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in early December; and implemented mandatory checks in chat-enabled regions in January 2026. It published its detailed defense, including the 1.4-year error claim, on January 7.

Privacy and access
Roblox’s deletion claim addresses retention, but not every privacy concern. Users may still question biometric processing, third-party vendor involvement, transmission security, legal jurisdiction, consent, and whether submitting a face or ID is genuinely voluntary when chat is a core feature.
Users without government ID, supported documents, a suitable camera, or the ability to complete a facial check may have fewer practical ways to correct an error. Privacy-conscious adults may also be forced to choose between submitting sensitive information and losing chat access.

An adult incorrectly classified as a minor may lose legitimate communication. A child incorrectly classified as an adult may gain access to inappropriate communication and content. Both errors damage trust, but their safety consequences are not symmetrical. Roblox should publish error rates in both directions rather than relying on a single average.
Same-band abuse remains possible
Age bands cannot eliminate abuse between peers or near-peers. Predatory users may also exploit neighboring categories, transferred accounts, compromised accounts, or communication channels outside Roblox.
What parents and players should know
- The age check principally gates chat and related communication features.
- A facial check estimates an age range; it does not prove identity or character.
- If a parent performs the scan while logged into a child’s account, the result may affect the child’s age classification.
- Correcting a disputed result may require ID verification or parental controls, depending on the user and region.
- Parents should continue using Roblox’s parental controls, supervision features, and reporting tools.
- A verified account should not be treated as proof that every contact is safe.
What Roblox should disclose next
A meaningful evaluation requires more than adoption figures and average model error. Roblox should publish or commission independent reporting on:
- false-adult and false-minor rates by age band;
- performance across relevant demographic and accessibility conditions;
- appeal success rates and median correction times;
- the number of users locked out of chat;
- the number of accounts rechecked, revoked, or transferred;
- evidence that grooming or unsafe adult–minor contact declined;
- how account sharing and resale are detected; and
- independent audits of deletion and vendor data handling.
Verdict: a troubled rollout, not a proven total failure
Roblox has built a substantial age-classification system, and the policy rationale is understandable: self-declared birthdays provide little basis for age-based communication controls. But the rollout produced credible failures involving misclassification, parent-account confusion, reported evasion, and lost legitimate chat. Roblox itself acknowledges that misclassification and evasion are possible.

So, is calling it a “trainwreck” fair? As a description of the early implementation and user experience, the evidence supports the characterization. As a claim that the technology is universally broken or that the policy has achieved no safety benefit, the evidence does not go that far.
The more important conclusion is narrower and stronger: age checks may restrict some adult–child contact, but they do not prove identity, prevent account transfer, eliminate same-band abuse, or guarantee effective moderation. Until Roblox publishes outcome data and demonstrates a reliable recovery process, its age-check rollout remains an ambitious but incomplete answer to the safety problem it was designed to address.
