Start with the tutorials, then practice in Free Play or Custom Training before bringing each skill into ordinary matches. Check your bindings in-game: Season 24 updated keyboard and mouse controls and added a free-look camera option.
How do you get better at Rocket League as a beginner?
Build repeatable fundamentals before trying difficult shots. Rocket League’s beginner guide recommends completing both tutorials and the training drills before challenging other players online, then returning to drills regularly. Treat them as a way to learn control and contact, not a promise of quick rank gains.
- Complete the tutorials and try the training drills.
- Use practice to work on a specific basic skill, such as making clean contact with the ball.
- Take that skill into a match and focus on doing it consistently rather than forcing a highlight play.
What should you practice first?
1. Make useful contact with the ball
A touch is most useful when you can direct it. Work on contacting the ball consistently and sending it where you intend—toward open space or away from immediate danger, for example. Avoid charging after every ball at full speed; a controlled touch is often more helpful than a hurried one. The official training and Free Play guide describes beginner drills aimed at consistent contact and directing the ball.
2. Learn Ball Cam
Ball Cam keeps the camera oriented around the ball, which can help you track play and stay aware of where the ball is relative to the field. Rocket League’s beginner guide highlights it for field awareness and team play. Practice switching it on and off in Free Play, and re-center your view as needed until the camera movement feels manageable. The advice is to learn the camera, not to leave it on every second.

3. Use boost deliberately
Boost is limited, so spend it with a purpose: for example, to reach a play or recover position. If your boost meter is empty, a forward dodge can help you cover ground. The original beginner guide gives controller inputs, but button names and bindings vary by platform and player settings; check your control display rather than relying on an older tutorial’s labels.
4. Land on your wheels
When your car comes down from a jump or bump, try to orient it so the wheels meet the ground. Air Roll can help adjust your car’s orientation, but this is a recovery habit, not a reason to attempt difficult aerials. Check your current bindings before practicing: button labels in older advice may not match your platform or custom layout.

5. Choose safer plays when a wall shot is uncertain
Wall shots are difficult for new players, and a missed attempt can leave the goal exposed. If you cannot make the touch reliably, choose a safer ground play instead. Come back to wall reads in practice as your contact becomes more consistent.
How should you practice between matches?
6. Use Free Play for low-pressure repetition
Free Play lets you work with the ball without the pressure of a match. Its ball-manipulation controls include placing the ball in front of your car, starting a dribble, passing the ball toward your car, launching it, and sending a shot toward goal. For the controls and feature details, see Rocket League’s Free Play and Training Pack guide. Some controls may conflict with existing bindings, so check settings and practice with them before relying on them in a match.

Custom Training packs can focus practice on basic contact, early aerials, wall reads, or reaching the ball quickly. Choose a pack that addresses something you are working on rather than assuming you need a specialized drill for every part of play.
8. Add variation when fixed drills feel too predictable
March 2026 patch notes describe Custom Training randomization options for ball speed, ball location, ball height, vehicle location, and vehicle rotation. These settings can vary a practice scenario; they are an option, not a requirement for beginners. See the v2.66 patch notes for the update details.

What should you do during a match?
9. Coordinate kickoff responsibility
At kickoff, check where your teammates are and communicate who is going before charging. Rocket League’s beginner guide recommends that only one teammate from each team challenge the kickoff and suggests Quick Chat to signal intent. The practical goal is to avoid teammates making conflicting decisions by default.
10. Check your controls and camera settings
Season 24’s September 2026 announcement says Rocket League added a free-look camera, modernized keyboard and mouse controls, and introduced new keyboard and mouse defaults for new players. Controller players can also enable the free-look camera. Read the Season 24 announcement and v2.76 patch notes for those changes. Because layouts can differ, inspect your current bindings and try unfamiliar controls in practice before using them in a match.
