In Rocket League, open Settings > Interface and enable Connection Quality Indicators. During a match, note which indicator appears: packet loss, latency variation, high latency, server health, or disconnected. That tells you whether to investigate a particular network symptom before changing settings. On PC, also check the game’s performance graphs: low FPS can cause stuttering even when the connection looks fine.
What the connection indicators mean
Rocket League’s indicators separate symptoms that players often describe generally as “lag.” Use the label you see to guide the next check.
- Packet Loss: Data transferred between you and the server is being lost.
- Latency Variation: Your ping is not steady.
- High Latency: The game is experiencing high ping to the server; this is the familiar lag symptom.
- Server Health: The indicator signals a server issue.
- Disconnected: You have lost connection to the servers.
These indicators describe what the game detects; they do not, by themselves, prove whether the cause is your Wi-Fi, router, internet provider, route to the server, or the server itself.
Is it network lag or PC stuttering?
If the game hitches while the connection indicators remain normal, check performance rather than assuming the network is at fault. This graph guidance is for PC; console players should use the matching platform connection guide below.

Check PC performance graphs
On PC, open Settings > Interface and enable Performance Graphs. The performance summary shows FPS and frame, game, render, and GPU timings. Rocket League support notes that low FPS can cause stuttering and possible input lag. High frame times can reflect less capable hardware or resources being used by other programs; high GPU times may indicate insufficient GPU performance or available resources.
Check PC network graphs
In the same Interface settings, enable Network Graphs to view measures such as incoming and outgoing packet loss, latency, and input buffering. The graphs can help distinguish an unstable connection from a frame-rate problem, but the numbers are diagnostic clues, not a definitive cause. Rocket League support lists local connection or router problems as possible causes of high packet loss and high or inconsistent latency. It describes latency over 100 ms as high in this PC troubleshooting context.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
If the performance graph points to low FPS or elevated frame/GPU timings, focus on PC performance. If the network graph or connection indicator shows loss or unstable/high latency, follow connection troubleshooting instead.
How to troubleshoot by platform
Rocket League provides separate official connection troubleshooting guides for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Follow the guide for the platform you actually play on; PC graph instructions do not apply to consoles.

Use Ethernet as a diagnostic test
If you currently play over Wi-Fi and can connect your platform to the router, try a wired Ethernet connection and compare the in-game indicators. Official gaming-network guidance recommends trying a wired connection where possible when troubleshooting latency or packet loss.
Treat this as a comparison, not a guaranteed fix. If the symptoms remain, a cable does not rule out an ISP route problem, congestion beyond your home, a server issue, or a PC performance problem. It also will not fix low-FPS stuttering.

Check whether Rocket League has a known issue
Before treating a problem as local, check the Rocket League Known Issues page. The page was updated October 6, 2026; its displayed current list does not identify an ongoing lag or stuttering issue. Its history records that an online-match performance-stuttering issue was fixed in version 2.71. This is a snapshot of that page and a past fix, not proof that no player can currently experience stuttering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why “lag” can mean different things
Rocket League’s indicators distinguish high ping from ping that fluctuates and from lost data. The game’s own 2018 announcement described latency variance as ping that was not holding steady and gave “typically fluctuating 40ms-60ms” as an example. That wording is historical, not a current threshold; the current support overview defines latency variation simply as ping that is not steady.

The same March 27, 2018 announcement said the game had “57,000 and counting” servers across ten regions. That is a dated historical figure, not a current server count. Its useful point for troubleshooting is that connection quality depends on the path to servers as well as on conditions in the player’s home network.
