Rocket League Lagging on PS5? Try These 7 Fixes

If Rocket League is lagging on PS5, first check whether Epic or PlayStation services are having trouble, then use the game’s connection indicators to identify whether you’re seeing high latency, packet loss, unstable latency, or a disconnection. After that, test the selected region and your home network in a low-risk order.

1. Check Epic and PlayStation service status

Before changing router settings or troubleshooting your console, check the Epic Games status page and PlayStation’s server status. These pages show current service conditions; check them when the problem occurs rather than assuming an outage is ongoing or resolved.

If a relevant service is reporting problems, wait for service to recover and test Rocket League again. If services appear normal, continue with the local checks below.

2. Turn on Connection Quality Indicators

Rocket League’s in-game indicators can help distinguish the kind of connection problem you’re experiencing. From the Main Menu, go to Settings > Interface, then check Connection Quality Indicators. Epic says these indicators can help narrow down high ping, packet loss, or disconnection.

  • VOLUME WHEEL — Its on-headset control makes it convenient to adjust audio levels without having to fiddle with any system or program settings
  • Server Health: a clue to a server-side issue; if it appears alongside lag, check service status before focusing on your home network.
  • High Latency: indicates a high-latency connection, commonly described as high ping.
  • Latency Variation: points to latency that is fluctuating rather than staying steady.
  • Packet Loss: indicates that connection data is being lost.
  • Disconnected: indicates that the game has lost its connection.

The indicators help you choose what to test next, but they do not by themselves prove the precise cause.

3. Confirm your selected region

Check Rocket League’s selected region and choose an appropriate nearby, available region in the game settings. Epic recommends checking the region to improve connection performance and speed, and warns that restricted regions can cause connection issues. A nearby region is a sensible starting point, not a guarantee that it will be best for every player or network.

4. Restart your modem or router safely

  1. Close Rocket League.
  2. Restart your modem or router according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Wait for the equipment to reconnect, then launch the game and test again.

This is a restart, not a factory reset; do not erase your router’s settings as part of this check.

5. Test a wired connection

If your PS5 is using Wi-Fi, connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable and test a match. If the connection improves, Wi-Fi may be contributing to the problem. If it does not, that result does not rule out a service outage or a problem with the route between your ISP and the game server. A wired connection is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed cure.

6. Pause downloads and reduce competing network use

As a short test, pause downloads and streams on your network and ask other household members to pause bandwidth-heavy activity for one match. If Rocket League improves, competing network use may be contributing. You do not need to keep other devices disconnected permanently. If service status is normal and the connection still performs poorly, Epic advises contacting your ISP about possible outages or network-performance issues.

7. Treat persistent NAT errors as a network-setup clue

Epic says NAT errors typically stem from network setup and may prevent joining a match or party. If you see a persistent NAT or connection error, follow PlayStation’s connection troubleshooting guidance, or contact PlayStation, your ISP, or your router manufacturer for help. Avoid copying unverified port-forwarding values or assuming that changing NAT settings will fix lag.

How to read the results of your tests

Compare the in-game indicator with what changes after each test: whether the issue coincides with a server-health warning, appears as packet loss or latency variation, or improves on Ethernet or when other network traffic is paused. Those clues can help narrow down the likely layer of the problem, but no single result guarantees its cause.
