The claim began as a tentative September 2024 report, and later reports in 2025 said Microsoft’s first-party handheld plans had been sidelined. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is a separate, announced partner device—not proof of the rumored next-generation handheld.
What did the next-gen Xbox handheld rumor say?
On September 23, 2024, Pure Xbox relayed a Windows Central report that Microsoft might begin its next hardware generation with two devices: a traditional successor to the Xbox Series X and a first-party handheld resembling the Steam Deck. Windows Central described this as a tentative belief based on sources, not as a confirmed product plan. Read Pure Xbox’s report.
Windows Central’s quoted wording, reproduced by Pure Xbox, said the rumored lineup was “tentatively” believed to include both a Series X successor and Microsoft’s “own take on the Steam Deck.” That is an outlet’s characterization of reporting—not a statement from a named Microsoft executive.
Was a 2026 launch confirmed?
No. The 2024 report speculated that next-generation hardware might arrive around Xbox’s 25th anniversary in 2026. It did not establish a release year or date. The report also supplied no confirmed product names, specifications, prices, or final lineup.

How does the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally fit in?
Microsoft announced the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally handheld in 2025, with an October 16, 2025 launch date reported for many countries. It is an Xbox-branded device made with ASUS, distinct from the rumored Microsoft-made next-generation handheld. Its announcement does not confirm that a first-party handheld will launch with the next Xbox generation.
Pure Xbox’s later handheld coverage also recounted 2025 reports that Microsoft’s first-party handheld plans for 2027 had been sidelined or were essentially cancelled. Those accounts describe reported plans, not a formal Microsoft announcement cancelling a product. See Pure Xbox’s ROG Xbox Ally coverage.
