Rocket League is a free-to-play car-soccer game built around a simple goal: drive, jump and send a physics-driven ball into the opposing net. Its appeal is easy to understand, while its competitive modes, aerial movement and team play give players room to develop more precise skills. Epic’s listing covers online 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3, plus Rumble, Snow Day and Hoops. The base game is free on the Epic Games Store for Windows, with optional in-app purchases.
What is Rocket League like to play?
The basic idea is soccer played with rocket-powered cars: steer toward the ball, jump to reach it and try to score in the opposing goal. The rules are easy to grasp, but the physics-driven movement means the game also supports more demanding play based on positioning, timing and coordination. Epic describes it as suitable for both quick sessions and competitive play; that is the store’s characterization, not an independent assessment of how quickly a newcomer will master it.
The Epic Games Store listing names 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 online play, alongside Rumble, Snow Day and Hoops. Those formats offer different ways to approach the core game, but the listing alone does not establish which mode is best balanced or most active.
Is Rocket League free, and what costs extra?
The Epic Games Store lists the Windows base game as free and says it includes in-app purchases. Its listing identifies Rocket Pass, challenges, an Item Shop and Blueprints as part of the game’s premium-content and customization system. Paid content is not presented as a requirement to play, and no current prices are stated here.

What do the ratings and PC requirements tell you?
Epic Games Store displayed a 4.4 player rating when its listing was accessed in 2026. Epic says that rating reflects players in its own ecosystem; it is not a critic score or an all-platform review aggregate.
The same Windows listing gives a 20 GB storage requirement and minimum and recommended hardware specifications. Those requirements can change, so check the live Epic Games Store listing before installing. The available official material does not establish a current player-count figure or comparative performance results.

Can you play with friends on other platforms?
Epic’s current support information says Rocket League supports cross-platform play. You can turn it off in Gameplay settings, but matchmaking may take longer; you cannot exclude only one selected platform. Epic also explains that linked accounts can share access to inventory, but accounts cannot be merged and items remain in their account of origin.
Chat has a platform distinction: typed in-match messages are visible only to players on the same platform, while party text chat works across platforms. See Epic’s cross-platform support FAQ for the current account and play details.

Does Rocket League still work with PC mods?
Epic says Easy Anti-Cheat became available on the Epic Games Store and Steam versions starting in April 2026. When EAC is enabled, players can queue online, but mods do not run. With EAC disabled, Epic lists offline play, training, LAN and replay viewing among the supported use cases. Check the Easy Anti-Cheat support article for the current toggle behavior.
Which platforms and inputs are supported?
Epic’s storefront lists controller support. The RLCS 2026 2v2 rules permit Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Steam and Xbox, and recognize standard controllers as well as mouse and keyboard. Those are rules for that competition, not a complete statement of consumer availability or casual-play restrictions. The same event rules prohibit wireless controllers at in-person tournament events; that restriction should not be generalized to ordinary play. Neither the storefront nor the competition rules establish that one input method is superior.

Does Rocket League still work on Steam?
Yes for existing Steam owners, according to Psyonix’s July 21, 2020 announcement: new players would no longer be able to download the game through Steam after its free-to-play launch, while existing owners would continue to play and receive updates. That announcement is historical; consult current support information for present-day account, cross-platform and anti-cheat behavior. Psyonix described its 2020 change by saying, “The core gameplay will remain the same, but we are refining the main menus to make exploring the game easier.”

Its free entry point and clear scoring objective make the game straightforward to try, while its online formats and physics-driven movement give players competitive goals to pursue. It is a sensible fit if you want car-based soccer, online matches with friends, or a game where improvement comes from learning movement and teamwork. If you are deciding whether its learning curve suits you, the official sources establish the available modes and features but do not provide an independent estimate of practice time or a hands-on review of the experience.
