Rocket League can hang at several different points: the opening splash screen, Press Any Button to Start, Epic Online Services login, the main menu, Free Play, or matchmaking. The right fix depends on where it stops. Start with the non-destructive checks below, then move to cache, file, network, and platform-specific repairs.
Quick diagnosis
- Everyone is affected: check for an Epic or Rocket League outage before changing local files.
- Free Play works but online matches do not: focus on account login, service status, region, NAT, firewall, and network settings.
- The game never reaches the menu: focus on cache, installation files, overlays, peripherals, and platform cache.
- It freezes after pressing a controller button: disconnect extra controllers and disable remapping tools or overlays.
1. Check Rocket League’s service status
A server outage cannot be fixed by reinstalling the game. Check the Epic Games Public Status page, the Rocket League live-issues page, @RL_Status, and the Rocket League Known Issues page. Look specifically for incidents affecting login, game services, matchmaking, parties, or platform services.

If there is a confirmed incident or a newly reported patch bug, wait for service restoration rather than repeatedly reinstalling. A green status page does not rule out an account, regional, or individual-platform problem.

- Quit Rocket League.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher or Steam completely. On Windows, use Task Manager to close any remaining Rocket League, Epic Games Launcher, or Steam processes.
- Restart the PC or console.
- Turn off the modem or router, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
- Launch Rocket League again.
On consoles, use a full restart instead of relying only on sleep or standby. Avoid repeatedly joining online matches while the game is only partially connected; test Free Play first so you can separate a launch problem from a matchmaking problem.

3. Clear Rocket League’s cache
Cache corruption is one possible cause of a loading hang. Deleting the cache is less disruptive than deleting the complete save or configuration folder.
PC
- Close Rocket League and its launcher.
- Open File Explorer and go to
DocumentsMy GamesRocket LeagueTAGame. - Delete the
Cachefolder. - Restart the launcher and open Rocket League.
The game should recreate the cache. Folder locations or support labels can change, so consult Epic’s official PC connection troubleshooting guide if the folder is not present.
Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch
Use the current cache-clearing procedure for your platform rather than deleting arbitrary game data. Epic’s Rocket League technical-support index links to separate Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch cache instructions.

4. Verify the installation on PC
Epic Games Store
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Open Rocket League’s three-dot menu.
- Select Manage, then Verify.
Steam
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click Rocket League and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Verification repairs missing or damaged installation files and is different from clearing the cache or resetting save data. Steam also provides a Rocket League technical-support wizard.
5. Check Epic account and browser authentication
If Rocket League accepts input at Press Any Button to Start but never advances, it may be waiting for Epic Online Services authentication, terms acceptance, or a browser-related prompt.
- Sign out of Epic Games Launcher, restart it, and sign in again.
- Confirm that the correct Epic account is linked to your Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo account.
- Open the Epic Games website in a normal browser and complete any pending verification, terms, or account prompts.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions that block pop-ups, scripts, or authentication.
- Set a mainstream browser as Windows’ default browser for testing.
- Check that Windows’ date, time, and time zone are correct, then synchronize the clock.
- Temporarily test with VPNs, aggressive antivirus web protection, and restrictive firewall rules disabled.
Re-enable security software after testing. If it is the cause, create only the minimum required exception. Epic’s connection guide also covers firewall, DNS, and clock-related troubleshooting, although some legacy Windows labels may differ from current menus.

6. Test the network before changing advanced settings
- Try a wired Ethernet connection.
- Temporarily disconnect other devices using the network.
- Test Rocket League through a phone hotspot.
- Avoid school, work, hotel, or other networks with captive portals or game-service filtering.
- Confirm that the in-game region is appropriate for your location.
Interpret the hotspot test this way:
- Works on the hotspot but not home Wi-Fi: investigate the router, DNS, ISP, firewall, NAT, or network filtering.
- Fails on both networks: local files, account authentication, platform services, or a Rocket League-side issue are more likely.
Epic lists changing DNS, including Google Public DNS, as an optional connection remedy. Try it only after ordinary restarts and network testing fail. Port forwarding is a later router-admin step for specific NAT or connectivity cases, not a universal fix for a game that cannot reach the menu. A VPN may help diagnose unusual routing restrictions, but it is not a standard solution and can complicate authentication.
7. Temporarily remove PC conflicts
Close or disable these items for one test launch:
- BakkesMod and other third-party Rocket League tools
- Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA, AMD, and recording overlays
- VPNs and corporate or school network filters
- Controller remapping utilities
- Unnecessary background applications
Also disconnect extra controllers and test with a keyboard and mouse if the freeze happens immediately after controller input. If the game starts normally, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict. Epic’s support index includes separate guidance for clean startup, graphics, controllers, firewalls, and third-party modifications.
8. Platform-specific checks
Xbox
- Fully quit Rocket League and restart the Xbox.
- Power-cycle the console if a normal restart fails.
- Check Xbox service and network status.
- Use the current Xbox cache-clearing procedure.
- Check the dedicated Xbox stuck-loading, save-data, and reinstall guidance in Epic’s support index.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
- Restart the console fully and check PlayStation Network status.
- Clear the system cache through the current Safe Mode procedure.
- On PS4, consider rebuilding the database only after ordinary restart and cache clearing fail.
- Back up save data before deleting local Rocket League data.
Do not confuse rebuilding the database with initializing the console. Initialization is destructive.

Nintendo Switch
- Restart the Switch and check Nintendo service status.
- Clear the system cache using the current system-menu procedure.
- Check whether the installation or microSD card is causing the problem.
- If supported by the official guidance, move the game to internal storage for testing.
- Back up save data where possible before creating new save data.
Cache clearing, reinstalling, deleting save data, and deleting replays or training sequences are different operations. Use the platform-specific articles linked from Epic’s technical-support index.

Account inventory and online progression are generally associated with the Epic or platform account, but local files can be lost or reset. Back up replays, training files, and configurations before using any “create new save data,” save deletion, or full-folder reset procedure. Follow the official instructions for your specific platform because backup and restore behavior differs.

10. Reinstall only after the safer fixes
Before reinstalling, check status pages, clear the cache, verify PC files, restart the platform, test another network, and disable mods or overlays. Reinstallation can repair a damaged installation, but it will not fix an outage, account problem, ISP restriction, or platform-service failure. It also may not remove damaged user data unless the appropriate support procedure separately recreates that data.

When to contact Rocket League Support
Contact official Rocket League Support if the issue survives the relevant branch above, appears after a known update, or affects only your account despite healthy status pages. Include:

- Operating system or console model
- The exact screen where loading stops
- Any error message
- Whether Free Play works
- Whether a phone-hotspot test works
- Status-page results
- Cache-clearing and file-verification results
- Recent updates or hardware/software changes
- Relevant logs, screenshots, or video
Patch notes have documented fixes for title-screen and menu-loading problems in the past, so compare a suspected update regression with the current Rocket League patch notes and Known Issues page instead of assuming the installation is damaged.
