The announcement did not name the game or give a release date, platforms, setting, or plot details. Rockstar later identified the game as Grand Theft Auto VI; its current official pages list November 19, 2026, as the scheduled release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What Rockstar confirmed in February 2022
Rockstar made the announcement in a community update covering GTA Online and the then-upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Grand Theft Auto V. In a section titled “What’s Next,” the company acknowledged fans’ questions about a new entry, given GTAV’s long run, then confirmed that work was underway.
Rockstar’s exact wording was: “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.” Read Rockstar’s February 4, 2022 announcement.
What the announcement did not reveal
The 2022 post confirmed development, not the game’s identity or launch plans. It did not announce a title, release date, platforms, setting, or story. Rockstar said it would share more when ready and directed readers to its Newswire for official updates. Its description of GTAV’s “unprecedented longevity” was qualitative; the post gave no numerical figure.

How Rockstar’s public updates progressed
July 2022: development resources
On July 7, 2022, Rockstar said it had been steadily shifting more development resources toward the next Grand Theft Auto over the preceding few years. The explanation appeared in a post about Red Dead Online: Rockstar said it would build on existing modes and add Telegram Missions that year, rather than release major themed content updates as it had in previous years. This was the company’s public explanation of its plans for Red Dead Online, not a complete account of internal development. Read Rockstar’s July 7, 2022 update.
November 2023: first-trailer timing
On November 8, 2023, Rockstar president Sam Houser announced that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would arrive in early December. “We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto,” Houser wrote.
