Rockstar acknowledged a launch-day problem that prevented some players from upgrading a digital Xbox 360 copy of Red Dead Redemption to the Xbox Series X|S edition. Rockstar said it was working with Microsoft. Its support instructions, updated December 3, 2025, direct eligible owners to claim the upgrade from the Microsoft Store on an Xbox Series X|S while signed into the account that owns the digital game. Physical Xbox 360 discs are not eligible.
What happened with the free Xbox upgrade?
The updated Red Dead Redemption release arrived on December 2, 2025. On launch day, some players who owned the Xbox 360 game digitally said the expected free Xbox Series X|S version was not available to them. Rockstar told GameSpot: “We are aware of an issue where Xbox players are unable to upgrade their digital Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption to the Xbox Series X|S version and are working with Microsoft to resolve it.” GameSpot reported Rockstar’s response on December 2, 2025.

Rockstar’s later support guidance explains how eligible players should claim the upgrade, but the available sources do not establish that every affected account was subsequently fixed. Store availability may depend on the specific account’s entitlement.
How to check for the free Series X|S version
- On your Xbox Series X|S, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the digital backward-compatible Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption.
- Open the Microsoft Store on that console and look for the upgraded Xbox Series X|S version.
- If it does not appear, verify that you are using the owning account and that the license is digital. Rockstar’s instructions do not promise a separate claim route for accounts where the Store still does not show the entitlement.
These are the steps in Rockstar Support’s Xbox upgrade instructions, last updated December 3, 2025.

Who qualifies—and who does not?
| Existing copy or account | Free Xbox Series X|S upgrade | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Digital backward-compatible Xbox 360 version, on the Microsoft account that owns it | Eligible under Rockstar’s support guidance | Check the Microsoft Store on Xbox Series X|S while signed into that account. |
| Physical Xbox 360 disc | Not eligible for the free upgrade | The free entitlement applies to eligible digital ownership, not the physical disc. |
| A different Microsoft account from the one that owns the digital game | The owning account’s entitlement will not be checked while signed into the other account | Switch to the account that owns the digital license and check the Store again. |
Rockstar’s support article describes the eligible Xbox 360 copy as the digital backward-compatible version. Its November 13, 2025 announcement also said current owners of the digital backward-compatible Xbox One version could upgrade digitally for free. For the specific Xbox 360 entitlement path, follow the later Xbox instructions; do not assume a physical Xbox 360 disc qualifies.

If the upgrade still does not show up
- Recheck the Microsoft account: it must be the one that owns the digital backward-compatible game.
- Use the Microsoft Store on an Xbox Series X|S console, as directed by Rockstar, rather than relying on a physical Xbox 360 disc.
- If the eligible digital title still is not listed, consult Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption support index or contact Rockstar Support. The published instructions do not document a universal fix or confirm the status of every player’s entitlement.
