The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are out: ASUS announced their retail launch for October 16, 2025, in named markets. They are Windows 11 handheld PCs made by ASUS in collaboration with Xbox—not a traditional Microsoft-made Xbox console. They offer an Xbox-focused interface alongside access to supported games from other PC storefronts, so their appeal depends on your library and preferred way to play.
Are the Xbox handhelds out yet?

ASUS announced an October 16, 2025 retail launch in Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam. What are ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X?
They are ASUS-built Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs developed in collaboration with Xbox. Xbox features include a dedicated Xbox button and a full-screen experience, while the devices retain access to supported games from other PC storefronts. They are not simply Xbox consoles in a smaller form factor: their games run on Windows, with Xbox services and features layered into the experience. Microsoft described the interface as “an immersive Xbox full screen experience, an aggregated gaming library and more” in its June 9, 2025 announcement.

Can the Xbox Ally play Steam games?
Yes, if the game runs on Windows and is compatible with the device. ASUS’s FAQ says Steam, Epic Games, and Battle.net games that run on Windows can be accessed. That does not guarantee that every game will work well or at all: compatibility, controls, launcher behavior, and performance can vary by title. Check the game and current device-specific reports before buying for one particular release. ASUS’s Xbox Ally FAQ covers storefront access.
What can you play, and how?
Xbox says the aggregated library brings together supported Xbox games and games from other PC storefronts. The company describes several ways to play:

- Native PC play: Install and run supported PC games on the handheld.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Xbox said more than 1,000 supported Play Anywhere titles could be played across console, PC, and handheld with one purchase. This is Xbox’s 2025 description of its catalog; confirm that a specific game is supported.
- Remote play: Stream games from your Xbox console to the handheld.
- Cloud gaming: Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) is an option where the service is available.
Xbox also said thousands of titles would carry Handheld Optimized or Mostly Compatible badges at launch. Those are Xbox’s compatibility labels, not independent reviews or a guarantee of a particular frame rate. See Xbox’s library and compatibility information for its program details.

The useful comparison is not a blanket “winner.” The devices serve different libraries and workflows, and the available specifications do not establish a universal performance ranking.
ROG Xbox Ally versus Steam Deck
The Ally’s central distinction is Windows 11, Xbox’s full-screen interface, and access to supported games across multiple PC storefronts. Steam Deck takes a different operating-system and storefront approach. If you already own games across PC stores or want Windows-based access, that difference may matter more than the Xbox branding. If your library and habits are centered on Steam Deck’s ecosystem, compare the specific games and setup you care about. An August 2025 Ars Technica report framed the Ally launch as Microsoft and ASUS’s answer to SteamOS and Steam Deck; that framing does not determine which handheld is better for a given player.

ROG Xbox Ally versus Switch 2
This is a comparison between different console ecosystems and supported game libraries. The Ally is a Windows handheld PC with Xbox integration; Switch 2 belongs to Nintendo’s handheld-console ecosystem. The available information here does not establish a detailed hardware or exclusive-game comparison, or show that the Ally replaces Nintendo’s proposition. Compare the games you want to play and the way you intend to use the device.
What to compare before choosing
- Library: Check specific game availability and compatibility in the ecosystem you plan to use.
- Play mode: Decide whether you want native PC play, console remote play, cloud gaming where available, or a Nintendo-focused library.
- Configuration: Compare processor, memory, and storage requirements for your games; model specifications alone do not settle real-world performance.
- Screen and handling: Consider display size, resolution, refresh rate, ergonomics, and portability in person where possible.
- Local cost and stock: Check current prices and availability in your country. The launch materials do not establish today’s prices or inventory.
What about storage and accessories?
Xbox’s announcement named separately sold SanDisk microSD storage, Seagate FireCuda 530R SSDs in multiple capacities, and a co-branded premium carrying case fitted for Xbox Ally handhelds. Before purchasing an accessory, verify that its exact model and capacity fit your Ally or Ally X and that it is currently available from a retailer in your region. The announcement does not establish current listings or prices.
