Those were beta features, not a hardware revision. Sony launched Cloud Streaming on Portal officially on November 5, 2025, expanding the service beyond the beta’s catalog limits.
What the April 2025 Portal update added
Sony announced the system software update on April 9, 2025, with rollout starting that day. The changes targeted the Cloud Streaming Beta experience on PlayStation Portal, rather than Remote Play generally. Sony described them as beta features that could change before a final experience.

Sort the streaming catalog
Players could sort the catalog by recently added to PlayStation Plus (the default), name or release date.

During streaming, the Create button opened a menu with press, press-and-hold and double-press actions for the menu, screenshot and video capture. Captures uploaded to cloud storage and could be accessed in the PlayStation App at Library > Captures for 14 days. Video clips were supported at up to 1920×1080 resolution and three minutes long.

Wait in a queue when servers are full
If no streaming server was available, players could join a queue, see an estimated wait and have their game session start automatically when a place became available.
Pause in some situations
The game paused when the Portal quick menu opened, when the power button put the device into rest mode, or when a system error appeared. Pause was not available in every situation, including some online multiplayer cases. Leaving the Portal in rest mode for more than 15 seconds disconnected the cloud session.

Get an inactivity warning and rate the stream
After more than 10 minutes of inactivity, a notification warned that the session was about to close. At the end of a streaming session, a feedback screen let players rate stream quality.
What Cloud Streaming on Portal means now
Sony officially launched Cloud Streaming on Portal on November 5, 2025. The service can stream select digital PS5 games from a subscriber’s own library, as well as eligible games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Sony says availability varies by country, region and game, and game availability can change over time. See Sony’s launch announcement for the official-service details.

Cloud Streaming runs the game on Sony’s servers, so a PS5 does not need to be powered on or available to another account during a Portal session. A PlayStation Plus Premium membership and suitable Wi-Fi are required. That is different from Remote Play, which connects the Portal to a paired PS5 and plays games installed on that console.

Beta network requirements and limits
Sony’s support page for the Cloud Streaming Beta listed minimum internet speeds of 5 Mbps to start a streaming session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These figures apply to the beta guidance and should not be treated as a guarantee of image quality or a complete statement of requirements for the later official service. Sony notes that performance varies with the game and network, and beta features may change. The beta catalog excluded games outside the PlayStation Plus catalog, as well as PS3 and PS4 games. Check Sony’s Cloud Streaming Beta support information for its published restrictions.
These were separate updates, not April 2025 features
Sony’s June 2024 Portal update covered Remote Play improvements: sign-in on select public Wi-Fi networks that require extra validation, using a QR code scanned with another device; visual feedback for emulated touchpad areas; and an optional battery percentage in the status bar. They were not part of the April 2025 Cloud Streaming Beta update. Sony also said internal data showed that over 60 percent of Portal owners had used Remote Play for the first time; the figure covered November 2020 through April 2024 and was not an independent survey. The June 2024 announcement provides that historical context.
