ROG Xbox Ally Series: What Microsoft and ASUS Actually Built

ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally handhelds combine Windows PC gaming with Microsoft’s Xbox interface and services. Here is what they play, how the two 2025 models differ, and whether the Ally X is worth $400 more.

The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 gaming PCs with Xbox software integration—not portable Xbox Series consoles. ASUS makes the hardware, while Microsoft provides the Xbox interface, Game Pass access, Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, and related services. The 2025 models launched worldwide on October 16, 2025, at U.S. ASUS-listed prices of $599.99 and $999.99 respectively.

The central appeal is the Xbox Full Screen Experience, which makes Windows handheld gaming more controller-friendly. It does not remove Windows, Armoury Crate, launcher accounts, compatibility issues, or the difference between locally installed PC games and streamed Xbox-console games.

What is the ROG Xbox Ally series?

The ROG Xbox Ally family is best described as ASUS-made Windows handheld gaming PCs developed with Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem. They are not Xbox Series X|S hardware in a smaller shell and do not natively run the Xbox-console operating system.

  • ASUS/ROG supplies the chassis, controls, cooling, display, battery, storage, warranty, retail distribution, and Armoury Crate software.
  • Microsoft/Xbox supplies the Xbox branding, Xbox Full Screen Experience, Xbox button and Game Bar integration, Xbox app, Game Pass access, Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, and compatibility guidance.
  • AMD supplies the Ryzen processors.

Both devices run Windows 11 Home and can access PC games from the Xbox app, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and other compatible Windows launchers. Xbox-console games may instead be accessed through Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, depending on the game, subscription, account, region, console, and network.

ROG Xbox Ally vs. Ally X: specifications and price

The two 2025 models share their operating system, screen, wireless standards, general Xbox software layer, and handheld format. The Ally X is a faster, roomier version—not a separate gaming platform.

How Xbox Full Screen Experience works

The software centerpiece is Xbox Full Screen Experience, a controller-oriented interface designed to make a Windows handheld feel closer to a console. It can boot into a full-screen Xbox environment, present games more prominently, and make the Xbox button useful for Game Bar-related controls.

That is a meaningful improvement over navigating a desktop with tiny Windows controls, but it is not a new console operating system. You may still need Windows desktop mode for:

  • Installing or updating launchers and games
  • Managing files, mods, drivers, and Windows Update
  • Changing settings that are not exposed in the Xbox interface
  • Handling launcher sign-ins, anti-cheat prompts, or troubleshooting

Armoury Crate also remains part of the ASUS software stack. Power profiles, performance controls, device settings, and Xbox interface functions can therefore feel split between Xbox Full Screen Experience, Armoury Crate, and ordinary Windows. Independent coverage from PC Gamer found the console-like interface useful while noting friction from those overlapping layers.

What games can you play?

Locally installed PC games

Games installed from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and other Windows-compatible stores run locally as PC software. Performance depends on the processor, power mode, resolution, frame-rate target, graphics settings, drivers, and the game’s controller support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Games may still require separate launcher accounts, desktop interaction, patches, anti-cheat support, or manual graphics adjustments. A compatibility label is guidance rather than a guarantee of perfect performance.

PC Game Pass

Game Pass can provide access to a changing PC catalog, but a subscription is not ownership of every Xbox game. Check the current plan, catalog, region, and whether a particular title has a PC version. Microsoft advertises three months of Game Pass Premium for eligible purchasers, subject to claim timing, eligibility, payment, auto-renewal, and regional terms.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming lets you stream supported games without installing them locally. It requires a supported plan, compatible region, and reliable internet connection. Latency, image quality, queues, and service performance vary, so it is not a dependable substitute for local games when traveling without strong connectivity. See the official ASUS product information for the advertised service integration.

Xbox Remote Play

Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console to the handheld. It is useful for accessing a home console remotely, but the console, account, network, and game must be configured correctly. It does not make the Ally a standalone Xbox console.

Performance, battery, and display

The Ally X is the performance model. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and 24GB of memory provide more headroom for demanding games and shared-memory graphics than the standard model’s Ryzen Z2 A and 16GB. Its 1TB SSD is also more practical for large PC installations.

The 80Wh battery is substantially larger than the standard Ally’s 60Wh unit, although runtime remains game- and setting-dependent. Resolution, frame-rate limits, brightness, power mode, wireless use, and graphics presets all matter. ASUS performance and battery figures are test-specific; they should not be treated as universal results for every game.

Both 2025 models use a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS panel with FreeSync Premium, Gorilla Glass Victus, and anti-reflection treatment. It should be responsive, but buyers seeking OLED contrast, deeper blacks, or a stronger HDR-style presentation will find the display a limitation—especially at $999.99. The Ally X is also heavier at 715g versus 670g.

Its USB4 port is valuable for high-speed peripherals, docks, external displays, and compatible expansion options. The standard Ally’s two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports remain useful, but they do not offer the same USB4 flexibility.

Is the Ally X worth $400 more?

The premium makes the most sense if you want several of the following:

  • Better performance in demanding AAA games
  • 24GB of memory for more headroom over the device’s useful life
  • 1TB of storage from the start
  • An 80Wh battery
  • USB4 for docks, displays, and high-bandwidth peripherals

It is harder to justify if you mainly play indies, older games, esports titles, or well-optimized releases; usually play near an outlet; prefer OLED image quality; or are willing to upgrade an SSD. The premium also makes less sense for owners of a recent high-end handheld who do not specifically want the Xbox Full Screen Experience.

Independent reviews have generally viewed the Ally X as the better device while questioning whether its $999.99 price is compelling. PC Gamer’s review is one example of that distinction.

Who should buy the standard ROG Xbox Ally?

Choose the standard Ally when your budget is around $600, you want the Xbox-focused interface, and your library is mostly made up of lighter or older PC games. It is also a reasonable entry point for Game Pass PC users who do not need the fastest available performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its compromises are significant: 16GB of memory, 512GB of storage, a smaller battery, and the same IPS display found in the more expensive model. Large modern games can quickly consume 512GB, although the M.2 2280 SSD is described as upgradeable. Replacing it may involve opening the device, reinstalling Windows or using recovery media, and handling any applicable warranty requirements.

Who should buy the Ally X?

Choose the Ally X if you want the faster of the two 2025 systems, expect to play more demanding AAA games, need 1TB immediately, or value the larger battery and USB4. Its improved grips, back buttons, haptics, motion sensing, and other controller features also strengthen its appeal as a premium handheld.

Do not buy it expecting a fundamentally different screen or a portable Xbox Series X|S. The display, Windows foundation, Xbox services, and software limitations are broadly shared with the cheaper model.

What about the 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20?

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 Bundle is a separate 2026 special edition, not a revised name for the original Ally X. ASUS lists a translucent anniversary design, a 7.4-inch OLED display, up to 1400-nit peak brightness, 120Hz refresh, TMR joysticks, and bundled ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the time reflected in the supplied product information, ASUS’s U.S. page showed “Notify Me” rather than a public price. The glasses require a USB-C tether and are not standalone. Treat the X20 as an enthusiast or collector option until price and availability are clear; it is not automatically the better value.

See ASUS’s X20 listing for the model’s availability status and specifications.

Alternatives to consider

  • Steam Deck: A stronger fit for buyers who prioritize lower cost, SteamOS simplicity, and a console-like Steam library. It is less suitable for Windows-only launchers, PC Game Pass, or maximum performance.
  • Older ROG Ally or Ally X models: Discounted previous-generation hardware may offer better value if you do not need the Xbox Full Screen Experience.
  • Other Windows handhelds: Consider these if OLED, a larger screen, lower weight, different ergonomics, or a different price-to-performance balance matters more than ASUS and Xbox integration.
  • ROG Xbox Ally X20: Worth investigating if OLED and the special-edition design matter more than confirmed launch pricing and availability.

Also budget for practical extras. A carrying case is not included in the standard package, so ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally 2-in-1 Premium Case is a logical option for frequent travelers. A suitable USB-C dock or charger can connect a monitor, television, keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, and other peripherals, but check power delivery, display output, and port support rather than assuming every dock is equivalent.

Final verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally series does not redefine gaming by turning Xbox into a portable console. Its more credible achievement is combining capable ASUS Windows hardware with a more Xbox-like front end and direct access to Xbox services alongside PC storefronts.

Quick Recap

  • Best for Xbox and Game Pass PC users: Either model, if you accept Windows and understand the difference between PC, cloud, and Remote Play access.
  • Best value within this family: The standard Ally for lighter games and a roughly $600 budget.
  • Best performance: The Ally X for demanding games, 24GB memory, 1TB storage, battery capacity, and USB4.
  • Best screen: Neither 2025 model if OLED is your priority; investigate the X20 or competing OLED handhelds.
  • Best for existing Ally owners: Upgrade only if you need the newer Xbox interface, more memory, more storage, a larger battery, or USB4.
  • Best for a true appliance-like console experience: A Steam Deck or conventional Xbox console may be a better fit, depending on your library and whether portable PC flexibility matters.
