Its defaults are designed to work broadly across games, power sources, and Windows software—not to optimize every title for maximum frame rate, battery life, or frame pacing.
Start with updates, then create separate plugged-in and battery profiles, choose a realistic frame-rate target, tune resolution per game, leave GPU memory on Auto unless a title gives you a reason to change it, and configure charging and standby behavior. The guide below targets the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA), but most Armoury Crate SE controls also apply to the 2024 ROG Ally X and original ROG Ally. Labels and available features can vary by model and software version.

1. Update everything before judging performance
Do this before changing graphics settings or comparing frame rates. Firmware and driver updates can affect performance, compatibility, power management, and Armoury Crate features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Finish Windows setup and connect to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates. Repeat until no important updates remain.
- Open Armoury Crate SE → Settings → Update Center.
- Install available BIOS, firmware, chipset, graphics, audio, and Armoury Crate updates.
- Update the Xbox app and any Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, EA, or other launcher you use.
- Restart after major driver or BIOS updates, then test a game.
Keep the charger connected during BIOS and firmware installation. Do not close Armoury Crate, power off the handheld, or interrupt the process. ASUS documents Armoury Crate SE’s BIOS and driver update system in its ROG Ally FAQ. ASUS also cites AMD graphics driver V32.0.12011.7001 or later for a specific Armoury Crate monitoring and Fluid Motion Frames troubleshooting case; that number is not a claim about the newest driver in 2026.

2. Build separate plugged-in and battery profiles
There is no single best operating mode. Higher power can improve frame rates, but it also increases heat, fan noise, and battery drain. The practical goal is to use the lowest mode that holds the frame-rate target you actually want.
| Situation | Starting mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indies, older games, emulation, or streaming | Silent/Eco or low power | Less noise and longer battery life |
| Most games | Performance | A sensible balance of power, heat, and frame rate |
| Demanding games while plugged in | Turbo/high power | More performance when the extra heat and noise are acceptable |
| Advanced tuning | Manual | Custom wattage and fan behavior, but more variables to troubleshoot |
Use the Command Center to change the active operating mode and view its TDP. Then create per-game profiles in Armoury Crate so a demanding AAA game can use a different mode from an indie or older title. Turbo is not automatically faster in every game: performance may instead be limited by the GPU, CPU, thermals, game engine, or an existing frame cap.
3. Match refresh rate and frame rate
The RC73XA has a 7-inch 1,920×1,080 display with a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium/VRR, but 120Hz is not automatically the best setting. It does not create additional frames; it simply allows higher refresh targets and can make controls feel more responsive when the game can deliver them.
| Game or priority | Good starting point |
|---|---|
| Turn-based, strategy, indie, or older games | 60Hz with a 30, 40, or 45 FPS target |
| Modern AAA games | 60Hz or 120Hz with a firm 30, 40, 45, or 60 FPS cap |
| Competitive games | 120Hz if the hardware can sustain a suitably high frame rate |
| Battery-focused play | 60Hz with a firm cap |
| Variable frame rates | VRR enabled where supported, with a realistic cap |
A stable 40 or 45 FPS can feel better than an uncapped frame rate that repeatedly jumps between values. Armoury Crate’s Command Center FPS limiter offers 30, 45, 60, 90, or Max, but ASUS says it works only in exclusive full-screen mode and must be enabled before launching the game. If a borderless or windowed game ignores it, use the game’s own limiter or a verified driver-level option.
4. Tune resolution and upscaling per game
Native 1080p is a good choice for lighter games, but it can be unnecessarily demanding in modern AAA releases. Start at 1080p when the game comfortably holds your target. If it does not, try 900p or 720p and use the game’s built-in upscaler.
- Use native 1080p for lighter games or when image clarity matters more than battery life.
- Try 900p or 720p for demanding games that cannot maintain their target at 1080p.
- Prefer a game’s internal upscaler when it offers one.
- Consider AMD Radeon Super Resolution when a game lacks a good internal scaler.
- Test frame generation separately. It can raise displayed FPS, but it may add latency or visual artifacts and cannot replace a stable base frame rate.
Do not stack several upscaling or frame-generation systems without checking image quality and input response. Microsoft documents Automatic Super Resolution for supported configurations, but its current support page ties Ally X support to docking to an external display and Xbox Insider enrollment. It should not be presented as a universal setting for handheld-screen play. See Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution requirements.
If Radeon Super Resolution or AMD Fluid Motion Frames controls are missing from Armoury Crate, ASUS says opening AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition once may make the controls available.

5. Treat GPU memory as a game-specific setting
The Ally X uses shared system memory for graphics. More reserved graphics memory is not a universal FPS upgrade: it leaves less memory for Windows and CPU workloads.
To change it, open Armoury Crate SE → Settings → Operating Mode → GPU Settings, choose Auto or 8GB, and restart.
- Keep Auto as the baseline.
- Try 8GB if a particular game reports insufficient video memory, has texture-streaming problems, or behaves better in testing.
- Restart after changing the allocation.
- Test one game at a time and record the original setting so you can revert it.
On the 24GB Ally X, the trade-off may be less noticeable than on a lower-memory handheld, but it still exists. Do not use unofficial BIOS modifications or extreme memory tweaks simply because a game exposes a VRAM warning.
6. Protect the battery and fix standby drain
For regular plugged-in use, enable Battery Care Mode in Armoury Crate SE’s battery settings. ASUS documents an 80% charging ceiling intended to reduce battery wear. The trade-off is less immediate runtime, so use the full-charge option only when you genuinely need the extra capacity for a long session.
ASUS also recommends enabling Modern Standby Assistant and Extreme Standby Mode under the relevant operating-mode or Eco Assist settings. Set the display to turn off promptly, and consider hibernation or shutdown rather than sleep when carrying the handheld in a bag. Sleep can still consume power or wake unexpectedly; hibernation takes longer to resume but is generally safer for extended storage.
Windows power-button behavior is available under Settings → System → Power & Battery. ASUS’s battery guide covers Battery Care Mode, bypass charging, hibernation, and standby features. These settings are intended to reduce wear or unnecessary drain; they do not guarantee a particular battery lifespan or runtime.

- Add frequently used launchers and utilities to the Armoury Crate game library.
- Use Gamepad Mode for controller-first interfaces.
- Use Desktop Mode for Windows, installers, file management, and desktop launcher interfaces.
- If Steam’s desktop interface is not responding correctly, switch to Desktop Mode manually.
- Disable only unnecessary third-party startup applications.
- Do not disable Microsoft Defender, Secure Boot, Core Isolation, Windows Update, or other security features as a routine performance tweak.
- Avoid registry cleaners and one-click debloat scripts unless you fully understand how to reverse them.
These changes reduce friction more than they increase FPS. Uninstalling Armoury Crate can also remove built-in controller-as-mouse functionality and device-specific update paths.

The FPS limiter does nothing
Confirm that the limiter was enabled before launching the game, that the game is using exclusive full-screen mode, and that no in-game limiter is overriding it. For borderless or windowed games, use the game’s own cap.
The wrong Game Profile applies
Armoury Crate may have detected the wrong executable. Open the game’s options or information area, select the alternative executable, save the profile, and restart the game. ASUS identifies an incorrect startup path as a cause of profiles not applying.
Radeon controls are missing
Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition once, then check Armoury Crate again. Also confirm that Windows, Armoury Crate, and the graphics driver are fully updated.
Audio crackles at low wattage
ASUS notes that some games can produce crackling at low wattage. As a targeted workaround, open Dolby Access → Settings → More Settings and disable speaker or headphone effects. Restore them if the problem persists or the audio becomes worse.
An external controller is ignored
Some games default to the built-in controller. Open Command Center and disable Embedded Controller, then reconnect or relaunch the game.
Xbox Cloud Gaming controls behave strangely
ASUS says Armoury Crate’s Auto Control Mode does not currently support Xbox Cloud Gaming. Select Gamepad Mode or Desktop Mode manually as needed.
Before your first serious game session
- Windows, BIOS, firmware, drivers, Xbox, and Armoury Crate are updated.
- A plugged-in mode and a battery mode are configured.
- Refresh rate and VRR are chosen for the type of game you are playing.
- A realistic FPS target is set in-game or through Armoury Crate.
- GPU memory remains on Auto unless a specific game justifies testing 8GB.
- Battery Care Mode is enabled for regular plugged-in use.
- Hibernate or standby behavior has been tested before carrying the device in a bag.
- Your launchers are in the Armoury Crate library and you know when to use Gamepad Mode or Desktop Mode.
The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X is the RC73XA, with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery, and a 1080p 120Hz VRR display. Those specifications give it considerable flexibility, but they also make one-size-fits-all advice misleading. Configure for the game, the power source, and the frame rate you can actually sustain—not simply the highest wattage or the largest VRAM number.
