The ROG Xbox Ally handhelds are no longer devices you need to wait for. ASUS and Microsoft launched the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X worldwide on October 16, 2025. Buy the $599.99 Ally for lighter games and a lower entry price; choose the $999.99 Ally X for demanding AAA gaming, its stronger processor, 24GB of memory, 1TB storage, and 80Wh battery. Wait for the 2026 X20 only if its larger OLED screen and bundled AR glasses are the features you specifically want.

The ROG Xbox Ally handhelds are no longer devices you need to wait for. ASUS and Microsoft launched the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X worldwide on October 16, 2025, across 45 countries. The real decision now is whether to buy the $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally, spend $999.99 on the higher-performance Ally X, or wait for the 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 bundle for its larger OLED screen and bundled AR glasses.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For most buyers, the ROG Xbox Ally X is the better long-term choice for demanding PC games because it combines the stronger Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and an 80Wh battery. The standard Ally makes sense when price is the priority and the game library is mostly indie, esports, older, or moderately demanding titles. Wait for the X20 only if its OLED display and AR-glasses bundle matter more to you than buying a known product now; ASUS has not established a U.S. price or launch date for it in the authoritative information currently available.

What the ROG Xbox Ally devices actually are

The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X are ASUS-built handheld gaming PCs running Windows 11 Home. They are not traditional Xbox consoles running a closed Xbox console operating system. They can play native Windows PC games, use cloud gaming, stream games from an Xbox console through remote play, and connect with Xbox services such as Xbox Play Anywhere where supported.

Microsoft and ASUS add an Xbox-oriented interface on top of Windows. The Xbox Full Screen Experience presents the game library, launchers, quick settings, friends, and Game Bar functions in a controller-friendly layout. The library can bring together games and apps from major PC storefronts instead of forcing the player to begin at the normal Windows desktop. Microsoft says the handheld mode can also suppress or defer some nonessential Windows activity and return the player to the game or default gaming app after sleep. The Microsoft handheld documentation explains the underlying Windows behavior.

That distinction matters. These devices offer more PC flexibility than a conventional Xbox console, but they also retain some of Windows PC gaming’s setup complexity. The Xbox interface substantially improves navigation, but it does not turn Windows into Steam Deck-style console software. Tom’s Hardware called the full-screen interface a major improvement while noting that it remains less polished than SteamOS and can hide some of the customization PC users may want.

The official Xbox comparison page confirms the shared display, wireless standards, operating system, and expandable M.2 2280 storage. ASUS lists the Ally X at $999.99 in the United States, and the same 24GB/1TB configuration was listed by Best Buy at that price.

The $400 gap is not simply a storage upgrade. The Ally X has a substantially stronger processor platform, 50% more memory, twice the internal storage, and a battery with one-third more capacity. It is also 45g heavier. The two models share the same screen resolution and refresh rate, so the premium is primarily about performance, endurance, and headroom rather than a sharper or larger display.

How much faster is the Ally X?

The standard Ally uses AMD’s Ryzen Z2 A, an eight-core integrated-graphics platform with RDNA 2 graphics. Tom’s Hardware places it closer to the performance class of the Steam Deck OLED than to the Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and RDNA 3.5 platform. That does not make the $599.99 model a poor handheld; it makes it a lower-cost entry point with a lower ceiling for new AAA games.

The Ally X is the model to choose when current big-budget games are the priority. In Tom’s Hardware’s testing, it produced:

msi Claw A8 PC Gaming Handheld: AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme, 8" FHD+ 120Hz Display, 24GB LPDDR5x, 1TB NVMe SSD, SD Card Reader, Thunderbolt 4, Win 11 Home: White BZ2EM-070US
  • High-Performance Computing: Harness the power of the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor to effortlessly handle demanding tasks. Enjoy reliable, high-performance computing wherever you go.
  • Simplistic Design: Enjoy the latest generation of Windows 11 Home for your everyday needs. MSI recommends Windows 11 Pro for business use.
  • Perfection Through Anthropometry: As a handheld device, Claw has achieved the optimal balance between its grip and weight. We have meticulously polished various design details, from the curvature that fits the palm, to the finger grip positions and trigger force.
  • Best-in-Class Battery Life: Unlock exceptional gaming endurance with our breakthrough battery capacity. It's where efficient power meets robust performance—more game, less charge.
  • 8-inch Smoothness Ready: Dive into the ultimate gaming experience with our 8-inch premium 120Hz gaming display, with exceptional color reproduction and smooth action.
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider: 64 frames per second at 720p and 45 fps at 1080p under the publication’s stated test conditions.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: 63 fps at 720p and 40 fps at 1080p using the tested Steam Deck preset.

Those are useful results, but they should not be treated as a promise for every game, preset, or power mode. Handheld performance depends on resolution, wattage, upscaling, ray tracing, driver versions, thermal conditions, and the game’s own optimization. The figures also show why 720p or an equivalent upscaled presentation can be a sensible target for demanding games: 1080p is possible, but often requires more compromises.

The Ally X is not automatically a transformative upgrade over every previous ROG Ally. Tom’s Hardware found that its performance improvement may not justify replacing an existing Ally by itself. Its stronger case is the complete package: improved grips, a larger battery, 1TB of storage, more memory, and a better handheld-oriented software experience.

Battery, controls, and everyday handling

The Ally X has the more attractive battery specification: 80Wh versus 60Wh in the standard Ally. That provides more capacity for the same game and settings, but it does not translate into a fixed number of playing hours. A demanding AAA game at high brightness and high wattage can consume the battery much faster than a lightweight indie game. Display brightness, frame-rate targets, power mode, wireless activity, and background software all affect endurance.

Neither model should be judged by battery capacity alone. The 7-inch 1080p screen is shared by both devices and supports 120Hz, 500 nits, and variable refresh rate. A 120Hz panel does not mean demanding games will run at 120 fps; it gives the system a higher-refresh display and VRR support for compatible fluctuating frame rates.

The chassis is one of the biggest changes from the ordinary Windows handheld formula. Both models use contoured grips inspired by Xbox Wireless Controllers, full-size analog sticks, assignable rear buttons, HD haptics, and a dedicated Xbox button. The standard Ally uses Hall Effect analog triggers according to the official specification listing. The Ally X adds impulse triggers. The result is a more familiar controller shape than a flat mini-PC design, although the X’s 715g weight may be more noticeable during long sessions than the standard model’s 670g.

The Xbox software is better, but Windows is still part of the deal

The Xbox Full Screen Experience is arguably as important to the Ally family’s usability as the processor. It gives players a direct route to games, launchers, quick settings, friends, and Game Bar controls without requiring frequent mouse-and-keyboard interaction. Microsoft also designed the mode to minimize background activity on handhelds, which can reduce some of the overhead associated with a normal Windows desktop.

Since launch, software updates have made the devices more useful:

The February Xbox update and April Xbox update are important context for anyone judging reviews published at launch. The interface and docking behavior have continued to evolve.

However, the underlying operating system remains Windows 11. You may still encounter launcher updates, permissions, desktop dialogs, scaling quirks, and game-specific configuration work. That flexibility is valuable if you want access to PC storefronts and Windows applications. It is less appealing if you want the appliance-like simplicity of a closed console.

Storage: the standard Ally needs a plan

The standard Ally’s 512GB SSD can disappear quickly after installing several large modern games, especially once Windows and launchers consume part of the usable space. Its M.2 2280 storage is expandable, and both models support removable storage.

The official Xbox accessory listing includes SanDisk cards in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. A 2TB microSD card for ROG Xbox Ally is therefore a practical way to expand a game library without immediately opening the handheld. Verify the card’s sustained performance and reliability rather than assuming every card with the same capacity will behave identically. Removable storage is especially convenient for less demanding games and a portable library, while buyers considering an internal SSD replacement should confirm the exact drive format, installation process, and warranty implications before ordering.

Storage is one reason the standard Ally’s $599.99 price can be less compelling for a large AAA library. If you already expect to add a card or replace the SSD, include that cost in the comparison with the 1TB Ally X.

Docking and useful accessories

Both handhelds can be used with a TV or monitor, but the dock is part of the experience rather than an afterthought. Check the dock’s power delivery, display-output support, USB expansion, and the charger’s wattage before buying. A dock that physically connects but cannot provide the desired power or video output will not deliver a console-like setup.

ASUS and Xbox list a 100W gaming charger dock for the family. The ROG Xbox Ally dock is most useful for buyers who intend to play docked regularly, connect peripherals, or switch between handheld and TV play. The April 2026 update’s automatic TV-display handling and other docking improvements strengthen this use case, although Auto Super Resolution was specifically described as a preview feature for Xbox Insiders on the Ally X when docked.

Protection is also sensible for a device that will travel. The official accessory list includes a dedicated 2-in-1 premium case. A ROG Xbox Ally premium case is a more relevant purchase for commuters and travelers than a generic sleeve because the handheld’s controls and grips need adequate clearance.

Should you wait for the ROG Xbox Ally X20?

ASUS has listed the ROG XBOX Ally X20 Bundle (2026). Its headline additions are a larger 7.4-inch OLED display and bundled ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 gaming AR glasses. ASUS describes the bundle with the same general performance class as the Ally X: Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, and 1TB of storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Based on those published specifications, the X20 currently looks more like an enthusiast display and bundle refresh than a clearly documented CPU or GPU generation jump. That is an inference from ASUS’s product information, not a hands-on performance result. Buyers should not assume that the X20 will deliver a major frame-rate increase unless ASUS later announces materially different silicon, cooling, memory, or power specifications.

There is also an important availability limitation. The reviewed authoritative sources do not establish an official U.S. launch date or U.S. price for the X20 bundle or a standalone X20. The ASUS X20 bundle listing confirms the concept and its headline hardware, but it is not enough evidence to state what the device will cost in the United States or when American buyers can purchase it.

Wait for the X20 if you specifically want the larger OLED screen, anniversary-style hardware, or the AR-glasses bundle and are comfortable waiting for confirmed regional details. Do not wait solely because you expect a confirmed performance revolution. The Ally X is the safer purchase for demanding games today.

Which model should you buy?

Buyer Best choice Why
First-time handheld buyer under $700 ROG Xbox Ally Lowest entry price, good controller ergonomics, and access to Windows PC and Xbox features. Accept the lower AAA performance ceiling and budget for storage expansion.
AAA-focused PC gamer ROG Xbox Ally X The stronger processor, 24GB of memory, 1TB SSD, and 80Wh battery provide the most balanced current package.
Indie, esports, older, or moderately demanding games ROG Xbox Ally The standard model’s lower performance class is less problematic when the library does not consist mainly of new, graphically intensive releases.
Existing 2023 ROG Ally owner Upgrade selectively Upgrade if the battery, grips, storage, or Xbox interface solves a real problem. Performance alone may not justify the purchase.
Existing 2024 ROG Ally X owner Usually keep the current device The newer Ally X may improve ergonomics, battery capacity, storage, and software, but the performance gain is not necessarily large enough to justify replacing a recent Ally X.
OLED or display enthusiast Wait for verified X20 details The larger OLED screen and AR-glasses bundle are the main reasons to wait. U.S. price, release timing, and final regional availability remain unresolved.
Xbox-console owner seeking portable access Either model, depending on budget You get native Windows PC gaming alongside Xbox cloud gaming, remote play, Xbox services, and supported Play Anywhere titles, but the device is still a Windows PC rather than a closed Xbox console.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Start with your games, not the brand name. If your priority is current AAA PC gaming, choose the Ally X. If you mainly play lighter games, the standard Ally can save $400.
  2. Decide whether 512GB is enough. If not, price a reliable microSD card or a properly compatible internal M.2 2280 upgrade before treating the standard model as the cheaper option.
  3. Account for the power mode you will actually use. Do not compare battery capacities as if they guarantee a particular number of hours. High-performance games and bright, high-refresh displays consume more power.
  4. Be comfortable with Windows. The Xbox Full Screen Experience improves handheld navigation, but launchers, updates, desktop settings, and PC troubleshooting remain part of ownership.
  5. Choose docked accessories deliberately. Confirm power delivery, video output, and charger requirements for your TV or monitor rather than buying a dock based only on its connector.
  6. Wait for the X20 only for its specific display and bundle features. Do not pay an unannounced premium or assume a performance increase before ASUS publishes complete regional pricing and specifications.
