Start with borderless mode for convenience, then test it against ordinary windowed and exclusive fullscreen using the same scene and display settings. Windows 10 has no universal setting that makes every windowed game faster. Results depend on the game’s rendering API and presentation model, GPU selection, monitor configuration, overlays, drivers, and frame-synchronization settings.
For most Windows 10 games, start with borderless/windowed fullscreen if you value quick Alt-Tab switching and multitasking. Then compare it with ordinary windowed mode and exclusive fullscreen using the same scene, resolution, refresh rate, and frame limit. There is no universal “best” mode: a modern game using an efficient flip-model presentation path may perform very well in borderless mode, while an older title or a game with a mode-specific bug may have better frame pacing, scaling, tearing behavior, or latency in exclusive fullscreen.
While optimizing windowed games, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce unnecessary background load by cleaning caches and reviewing Windows settings.

The most reliable optimization is not a registry tweak or a long list of “gaming booster” settings. Establish a repeatable baseline, change one variable at a time, and keep the mode that produces the best frame-time consistency and input response on your particular game, GPU, monitor, and driver.
Quick recommendation by symptom
| What you want or observe | First test |
|---|---|
| Fast Alt-Tab, multitasking, or multi-monitor use | Borderless/windowed fullscreen at the desktop’s native resolution |
| A resizable game window or a borderless-specific overlay problem | Ordinary windowed mode at a defined size |
| Tearing, unusual latency, incorrect scaling, or poor frame pacing | Compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen at the same resolution and refresh rate |
| A laptop game may be using integrated graphics | Set the game executable to the intended GPU in Windows Graphics settings |
| Stutter began after enabling an overlay or capture feature | Disable unnecessary overlays and recording features, then retest |
| One game is broken while other games are normal | Investigate that game, its API, driver branch, overlays, and compatibility settings before changing Windows globally |
1. Establish a baseline before changing settings
Write down the details that can change the result:
- Game title and exact executable, if known
- Windows edition and build
- GPU model, including integrated and discrete GPUs in a laptop
- Graphics-driver version
- Monitor resolution, refresh rate, and display connection
- Rendering API, such as DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, if the game exposes it
- Whether the problem occurs in ordinary windowed, borderless, or exclusive-fullscreen mode
- V-sync state, frame limiter, resolution scale, and major graphics settings
- Whether Game Bar, recording, streaming, or third-party overlays are active
Choose a repeatable test: the same save location, benchmark, replay, crowded area, or a fixed route through the game. Record average FPS, 1% lows when your monitoring tool provides them, frame-time consistency, tearing, stutter during Alt-Tab, and input response. Also note whether Windows or the monitor changes resolution or refresh rate when the mode changes.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
Test one variable at a time. If you change the display mode, resolution, V-sync, driver, and overlays together, you will not know which change helped or caused a new problem. Do not assume that a reported FPS increase means the game feels better: inconsistent frame times and added input latency can matter more than the average.
2. Pick the least troublesome display mode
Borderless or windowed fullscreen
Borderless mode usually gives the smoothest desktop workflow. It is convenient for Alt-Tab, second monitors, chat applications, capture tools, and switching between applications without a full display-mode transition. At the desktop’s native resolution, it can also avoid repeatedly changing the Windows display mode.

The game may use an older presentation path, interact poorly with an overlay, or handle scaling inefficiently. Borderless mode can also expose different V-sync, compositor, variable-refresh, or frame-pacing behavior from exclusive fullscreen.
Ordinary windowed mode
Use a normal resizable window when you need a specific window size, when borderless mode has scaling or capture problems, or when a game behaves incorrectly at the full desktop resolution. Define the window size before comparing results. A smaller outer window does not necessarily reduce rendering work: some engines render at a fixed internal resolution or continue processing the same scene complexity.
Exclusive fullscreen
Exclusive fullscreen remains a valid comparison, not an obsolete setting. It may help with a title that has tearing, unusual latency, incorrect scaling, a broken borderless implementation, or poor frame pacing. The trade-off is less convenient Alt-Tab behavior and possible display-mode changes when entering or leaving the game.
Microsoft’s developer documentation explains that applications using modern DXGI flip-model presentation can make windowed presentation approach the efficiency of classic exclusive fullscreen in suitable configurations. That is an application-level implementation detail, not a guarantee for every Windows 10 game. Microsoft, c003 and c004
3. Use a controlled resolution and refresh-rate test
For a meaningful comparison, first make the desktop and game settings explicit:

- Confirm the monitor’s intended refresh rate in Windows display settings.
- Confirm the game’s resolution and refresh-rate choices.
- Test borderless at the native desktop resolution.
- Test a lower in-game render resolution while leaving the desktop resolution unchanged, if the game supports resolution scaling.
- Test ordinary windowed mode at a known size.
- Test exclusive fullscreen at the same resolution and refresh rate.
If fullscreen changes the desktop resolution or scaling, that global mode switch may explain differences in behavior. Borderless avoids that switch, but it is not automatically faster. Check aspect ratio, DPI scaling, resolution scale, sharpening, and the game’s own render-resolution controls.
4. Verify which GPU the game uses
This is especially important on laptops and other hybrid-GPU systems. A game can appear to work normally while rendering on an integrated GPU when the discrete GPU was intended, or a mode change can expose a routing or presentation issue.
In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings (the exact label can vary by Windows build). Add or select the game’s executable, choose Options, select the appropriate preference—typically High performance for the discrete GPU or Power saving for the integrated GPU—and save it. Restart the game after changing the preference. Microsoft documents this per-application GPU selection for systems with multiple graphics processors. Microsoft, c005
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify the result with the game’s own diagnostic display or a trusted monitoring tool. Do not select “high performance” blindly if battery life, heat, or fan noise is the priority. The correct choice depends on the workload and the hardware.
5. Enable Game Mode, but do not expect a magic FPS multiplier
Game Mode is a reasonable, low-risk baseline:
Settings > Gaming > Game Mode > Game Mode: On
Microsoft describes Game Mode as a feature intended to optimize system performance during gaming sessions. It cannot repair a game-engine bug, incorrect GPU selection, thermal throttling, a defective driver, or a display-mode problem, and it is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier. Microsoft, c006
For diagnosis, also pause or disable features you are not using:
- Windows Game Bar recording and background capture
- Streaming or instant-replay functions
- Third-party FPS, chat, browser, RGB, and hardware-monitoring overlays
- GPU-vendor overlays and recording tools
- Unnecessary launchers or utilities that inject into the game
Change one overlay at a time and restart the game. Capture and overlay features do not always reduce average FPS dramatically; they can instead cause intermittent frame-time spikes, focus problems, flicker, or Alt-Tab failures.

6. Test the Windows 10 fullscreen-optimizations checkbox per game
Many Windows 10 game executables expose a compatibility option named Disable fullscreen optimizations. Treat it as a per-game troubleshooting experiment, not a universal optimization.
- Find the game’s actual executable. A shortcut may point to a launcher rather than the game.
- Right-click the executable and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Test Disable fullscreen optimizations both checked and unchecked.
- Choose Apply, restart the game, and repeat the same test scene.
It may be worth testing this switch when a particular title has bad frame pacing, flickering, incorrect scaling, overlay conflicts, or unusual Alt-Tab behavior. Keep the setting that produces the better measured result. Microsoft support/Q&A material documents the per-executable workflow, but it is not a universal performance benchmark. Microsoft support/Q&A, c007
7. Understand why flip-model presentation matters
Windowed games are displayed through the Windows desktop-composition pipeline. Microsoft’s DXGI documentation contrasts two broad presentation models:
- Bitblt model: the game’s frame is copied into a Desktop Window Manager redirection surface before composition.
- Flip model: back buffers are shared with the compositor, reducing extra copies and system-memory traffic.
The reduced copying can be particularly important for windowed applications. Microsoft also describes benefits that can include faster Alt-Tab behavior, lower power use, and access to modern display features. In some configurations, DirectFlip or Independent Flip can allow the compositor to reduce or bypass some composition work. Microsoft, c004 and c003
The practical conclusion is simple: borderless is not inherently slow, and exclusive fullscreen is not inherently fastest. A game developer controls the swap-chain and presentation implementation. A modern game using a flip-model path may perform very well in borderless mode; a legacy game using an older path or containing a mode-specific defect may behave better in exclusive fullscreen. Windows 10 does not provide a universal switch that forces every game into the best presentation model.
8. Check V-sync, frame limits, tearing, and latency together
A windowed game can interact differently with the desktop compositor, monitor refresh behavior, V-sync, variable refresh, and overlays than the same game in exclusive fullscreen. Compare these settings as a group, but change only one at a time:
- Game V-sync on versus off
- In-game frame limiter versus an external limiter, if you already use one
- Borderless versus exclusive fullscreen at the same refresh rate
- Native refresh rate versus a deliberately selected lower rate
- Variable-refresh behavior supported by the monitor and GPU
If you see tearing, compare V-sync on and off in both borderless and exclusive fullscreen. If latency is the priority, use frame-time consistency and an available input-latency measurement rather than relying on the mode’s name. A setting that raises the FPS counter can still feel worse if it introduces uneven pacing or queueing.

Important: Windows 11’s “Optimizations for windowed games” is not a Windows 10 setting
Do not follow Windows 11 instructions under a Windows 10 heading. Microsoft’s current support documentation places Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11. It targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed and borderless modes by moving them from the legacy bitblt presentation model toward the flip model. Microsoft also associates the feature with supported variable-refresh displays and Auto HDR scenarios. Microsoft, c002
Windows 10 still has useful display, Game Mode, per-application GPU, and compatibility controls, but it does not have that Windows 11 Settings switch. Do not substitute the Windows 10 Disable fullscreen optimizations checkbox and claim that it is the same feature; they are different controls with different purposes.
9. Update drivers and the game carefully
Install the GPU manufacturer’s current driver that supports your hardware and Windows 10, and update the game through its official distribution channel. If the problem began immediately after a driver or game update, check whether the vendor provides a documented rollback or prior version and test that version only when appropriate.
A driver update can change presentation behavior, overlay integration, V-sync, or variable-refresh handling. A game update can change its rendering API or swap-chain implementation. Record the version before changing it so that you can identify whether the update altered the result.
Do not make registry edits, install “FPS booster” utilities, or use indiscriminate driver-cleaning tools as first-line advice. They add risk and do not address the most common causes identified by a controlled display-mode test.
Troubleshooting matrix
| Symptom | Tests in order | Likely direction |
|---|---|---|
| Borderless stutters but fullscreen is smooth | Disable overlays and capture; compare V-sync and frame limiter; test the compatibility checkbox; verify refresh rate | Presentation, compositor, overlay, or game-specific issue |
| Fullscreen changes resolution or causes a black screen | Test native borderless; verify refresh rate and scaling; try ordinary windowed mode | Display-mode transition, scaling, driver, or game implementation |
| Low FPS only on a laptop | Check the per-app GPU preference; connect power if appropriate; monitor GPU usage and temperatures | Wrong GPU, power policy, or thermal limit |
| Tearing in borderless | Compare V-sync states, monitor refresh rate, variable-refresh support, and exclusive fullscreen | Synchronization or display-path difference |
| Alt-Tab causes freezes or flicker | Test borderless and ordinary windowed; disable overlays; test fullscreen optimizations per executable | Compatibility, overlay, or mode-transition problem |
| Lowering the window size does not improve FPS | Check internal resolution scale and GPU utilization; compare a real render-resolution change | The engine may render independently of outer window dimensions |
| Every mode is slow | Check GPU selection, temperatures, driver, graphics settings, CPU/GPU utilization, and background tasks | General hardware, thermal, driver, or game-performance bottleneck |
When the problem is not Windows 10
If only one title, one API, one overlay, one monitor, or one driver branch shows the problem, it is more likely to be game-, driver-, or hardware-specific than a universal Windows setting. Before escalating, capture:
- Exact game executable and game version
- Windowed, borderless, or exclusive-fullscreen mode
- Resolution, refresh rate, V-sync, and frame limit
- Selected GPU and driver version
- Overlay and recording state
- Whether the problem remains after a complete game restart
- Average FPS and frame-time behavior in the same repeatable scene
If the GPU is the bottleneck in both windowed and fullscreen modes, a hardware upgrade may increase rendering capacity, but it will not specifically optimize Windows 10’s windowed presentation. Likewise, replace a display cable only when testing shows that the existing connection cannot support the required resolution or refresh rate; neither a new cable nor a new monitor is a general Windows 10 FPS fix.

Final checklist
- Record Windows, driver, GPU, monitor, API, resolution, refresh rate, and overlay details.
- Use a repeatable scene and compare frame times, not just average FPS.
- Try borderless first for convenience, then ordinary windowed and exclusive fullscreen.
- Verify the game’s intended GPU on hybrid systems.

- Compare V-sync, frame limits, refresh rate, and variable-refresh behavior.
- Test Disable fullscreen optimizations per executable when that title has a specific compatibility problem.
- Do not confuse that Windows 10 checkbox with Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games.
- Update or roll back drivers and the game only with a clear reason and a record of versions.
- Keep the configuration that measurably improves the game you actually play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is borderless fullscreen faster than exclusive fullscreen on Windows 10?
For convenience, fast Alt-Tab switching, and multi-monitor use, start with borderless/windowed fullscreen. For tearing, unusual latency, scaling errors, or poor frame pacing, compare it with exclusive fullscreen. The result depends on the game and its presentation technology.
Does Windows 10 have Optimizations for windowed games?
No. Windows 11’s Settings feature named Optimizations for windowed games is not a Windows 10 setting. Windows 10 does offer the per-executable Disable fullscreen optimizations compatibility checkbox, but that is a separate troubleshooting control.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow do I force a Windows 10 game to use my dedicated GPU?
Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings, add or select the game executable, choose Options, select the intended GPU preference, save, and restart the game. Labels can vary by Windows 10 build and hardware.
Should I turn on Game Mode in Windows 10?
Game Mode is a reasonable low-risk baseline at Settings > Gaming > Game Mode, but it is not a guaranteed FPS multiplier. It cannot fix a game bug, thermal throttling, an incorrect GPU, or a display-mode problem.
Is Windows 10 still supported for gaming?
Windows 10 Home and Pro 22H2 reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025. LTSC editions have separate lifecycle dates, so their support status must be checked separately.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal Windows 10 windowed-games optimization switch. Borderless is usually the best starting point for convenience, but the best-performing mode depends on the game’s presentation model, GPU routing, display settings, overlays, driver, and monitor. Test borderless, ordinary windowed, and exclusive fullscreen under identical conditions, then keep the mode with the best frame pacing and latency.
