Its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, 80Wh battery and Xbox-inspired controls give it the hardware to compete at the top of the Windows handheld market. The problem is the software underneath: Windows 11 still brings desktop controls, launchers, updates and compatibility quirks to a device that is supposed to feel as simple as a console.
Microsoft and ASUS have made that experience considerably more Xbox-like. They have not eliminated the underlying PC friction.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X actually is
The ROG Xbox Ally X is made by ASUS ROG in partnership with Microsoft. It runs Windows 11 Home, not the operating system used by Xbox consoles, and it is not Microsoft-built Xbox hardware.

Think of it as a high-end Windows gaming PC with integrated gamepad controls, Xbox services and a handheld-focused Xbox interface. It can access PC Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net and other Windows-compatible game sources. It can also use Xbox Cloud Gaming where the relevant game, subscription, account and region are supported.

That distinction matters. Calling it an “Xbox handheld” is understandable, but it can imply that every game owned on an Xbox console will install and run locally. That is not how the Ally X works.
The device launched worldwide on October 16, 2025. In the United States, ASUS lists the Ally X at $999.99, although retailer discounts, regional pricing, taxes and availability can change.
The hardware is genuinely ambitious
| Component | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 Home |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Memory | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 |
| Storage | 1TB M.2 2280 SSD |
| Display | 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS |
| Refresh rate | 120Hz |
| Brightness | 500 nits |
| Variable refresh | AMD FreeSync Premium |
| Battery | 80Wh |
| Weight | 715g |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 |
| Ports | USB4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C |
| Included charger | 65W |
| Storage expansion | UHS-II microSD |
The headline is not simply the processor. The combination of 24GB of RAM, a replaceable 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and an 80Wh battery gives the Ally X more headroom than many handheld PCs. The battery is large for this product category, though capacity is not the same thing as a guaranteed runtime. A demanding game at a high performance setting will consume power much faster than a lightweight indie title.

The 7-inch 1080p/120Hz display supports sharp image quality, high refresh rates and variable refresh through FreeSync Premium. It is an IPS panel rather than OLED, however, so buyers looking for OLED contrast or a larger 8-inch-class screen may find the display less distinctive than the rest of the device.
Controller-style ergonomics
ASUS has shaped the Ally X around contoured grips inspired by Xbox Wireless Controllers. It includes full-size analog sticks, ABXY buttons, a D-pad, impulse triggers, HD haptics, six-axis motion sensing, two assignable rear buttons and dedicated Xbox, View, Menu, Command Center and Library controls.
Those larger grips are important. A handheld’s comfort depends on how its weight is distributed and how naturally the controls sit in the hands, not just on processor specifications. The trade-off is size: at 715g, the Ally X is a substantial handheld. Greater comfort for longer sessions can come with reduced portability in a bag or jacket pocket.
Is it a real portable Xbox?
Only partly.
The Ally X can provide an Xbox-oriented way to reach:
- Xbox and PC-compatible games through the Xbox app.
- PC Game Pass titles that support Windows.
- Xbox Play Anywhere games, when the individual title supports the program.
- Games from Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net and other PC storefronts.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming for supported content and eligible users.
- Cross-device progress and achievements where the relevant game and service support them.
It does not automatically provide native access to every game in an Xbox console library. A console purchase does not guarantee that the same title can be installed on Windows. Native play depends on factors such as a compatible PC version, Play Anywhere support or inclusion in the applicable PC Game Pass catalog. Cloud streaming is a separate option and depends on supported games, service entitlements, internet access and regional availability.

- 🔌 Versatile Connectivity & Complete Accessories Kit | Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.4 for lag-free online gaming & device pairing; 2 Type-C ports (USB 4 + USB 3.2 Gen2) support data transfer, video output & PD charging.
Xbox has said Play Anywhere covers more than 1,000 games. That is a substantial supported catalog, but it is not a promise that an owner’s entire Xbox library will work locally on the Ally X.
The one thing holding it back: Windows 11
The Ally X’s central weakness is not a lack of power. It is that a handheld designed to resemble a console still runs on a desktop operating system.
Windows creates friction at the worst possible moments
Windows provides broad compatibility, but it was not originally built around a controller-operated 7-inch touchscreen. Depending on the game and launcher, users may still encounter:
- Small desktop buttons and awkward touch targets.
- On-screen keyboard friction when entering passwords or commands.
- Windows notifications and update prompts.
- Separate ASUS, Microsoft and game-launcher updates.
- Different sign-in states across Xbox, Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic and Battle.net.
- Games opening in the wrong input mode.
- Launcher overlays competing with the Xbox interface.
- Older games, anti-cheat systems or DRM behaving inconsistently.
- Less predictable suspend and resume behavior than on a console-focused system.
None of these issues necessarily makes a game unplayable. Together, they undermine the main advantage a handheld console is meant to offer: picking it up and getting into a game with minimal intervention.
Microsoft’s own developer material describes the Ally and Ally X as effectively fully portable Windows 11 PCs. That is the most useful way to understand the product. It has a console-style shell and an Xbox software layer, but its foundation remains a PC.
The Xbox interface helps, but it does not replace Windows
Microsoft has added a full-screen handheld experience, a dedicated Xbox button, an enhanced Game Bar, quick access to the library, chat and social features, access to ASUS Armoury Crate SE and game profiles intended to help balance performance and energy use.
These additions reduce the need to interact with the desktop. They do not turn Windows into the Xbox console operating system. A game that launches through Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net or another service may still require a separate account, launcher update, overlay or input adjustment.
That is why “console-like” should be used carefully. The Ally X offers an Xbox layer on top of Windows; it does not guarantee an Xbox-console experience from startup to shutdown.

What games can you actually play?
The answer depends on where the game is owned and how it is supported.
Xbox and PC Game Pass
Windows-compatible Game Pass titles can be installed through the Xbox app when the user has the appropriate plan and the game is available for PC. The catalog, plan benefits and cloud entitlements can change by region and over time, so buyers should check the current Xbox Game Pass page before subscribing.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Eligible Play Anywhere titles can support shared ownership, saves and achievements between Xbox and PC, subject to the game’s specific implementation. This is the closest route to a cross-device Xbox experience, but it applies only to participating games.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud streaming can make supported Xbox games available without a native Windows installation. It requires the applicable service access, a compatible game, a suitable connection and availability in the user’s region. It is also more sensitive to network quality than locally installed games.
Steam, Epic and other PC storefronts
The Ally X’s Windows foundation is an advantage here. It can run PC storefronts that may require workarounds or additional configuration on SteamOS. The cost is that each launcher may bring its own sign-in process, update behavior, controller expectations and DRM.
Ally X versus Steam Deck
This is less a simple specification contest than a choice between two operating-system philosophies.
| Choose the Ally X for | Choose Steam Deck for |
|---|---|
| Broader Windows storefront compatibility | A SteamOS-first experience |
| Xbox services and PC Game Pass | Simpler Steam library navigation |
| Higher-end hardware and 1080p/120Hz output | More console-like suspend and resume |
| An 80Wh battery and 24GB RAM | A generally lower-cost entry point |
| Xbox-style controls and larger grips | Less desktop interaction for Steam-focused play |
SteamOS is not universally compatible. Some Windows-first games, launchers, multiplayer titles and anti-cheat systems work better—or only work—on Windows. The practical trade-off is straightforward: the Ally X offers broader compatibility with more setup friction, while the Steam Deck offers a smoother handheld experience for Steam-centric buyers with a narrower compatibility envelope in some categories.

The two devices share several broad specifications, including 24GB of memory, 1TB of storage, an 80Wh battery and a 7-inch 1080p/120Hz display. The newer model adds or changes the processor, Xbox-oriented controls and software, controller-like grips, impulse triggers and USB4 connectivity.
For a first-time buyer, the newer model may be more attractive if Xbox integration and the revised ergonomics matter. For an existing Ally X owner, the case is weaker unless those features solve a specific problem. A substantially discounted original Ally X may deliver much of the same battery, storage and memory capacity for less money.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is $999.99 justified?
At the U.S. ASUS price of $999.99, the Ally X is competing with premium handheld PCs and, in some cases, entry-level gaming laptops. Its value is strongest for someone who wants several capabilities in one device:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- High-end integrated-graphics performance.
- Xbox services and PC Game Pass.
- Steam, Epic, Battle.net and other Windows storefronts.
- A large battery for a handheld PC.
- 1TB of replaceable internal storage.
- Xbox-style controls and substantial grips.
- USB-C connectivity for a monitor, TV, keyboard, mouse or dock.
The value case is weaker for Steam-only users who prioritize SteamOS simplicity, Xbox owners expecting every console game to install natively, buyers who want OLED, people seeking the lightest handheld or anyone unwilling to troubleshoot Windows.
The price is therefore a judgment about priorities, not an objective verdict. The Ally X can justify the premium for a multi-store PC gamer who also uses Xbox services. It is difficult to justify for someone who will use only Steam and wants the least complicated handheld experience.
Battery, storage and portability caveats
The 80Wh battery is a major hardware strength, but real runtime varies with the game engine, graphics settings, frame-rate target, display brightness, refresh rate, performance mode, upscaling, background Windows activity and whether the charger is connected. There is no single honest gaming-hours figure that applies to every game.
The 1TB SSD can also fill quickly with modern PC games. Fortunately, it is replaceable and the device supports microSD storage. Buyers should verify the physical compatibility, thermal requirements, installation process and any warranty implications before replacing the drive. A generic microSD card should not be assumed to deliver the same performance as a faster model.
The Ally X’s USB-C ports make it useful as a compact PC when connected to a display and peripherals. A dock or hub can be practical, but buyers should check power-delivery support and port selection. A low-cost hub may not provide enough power for demanding play while driving an external display.

Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?
Buy it if you are an Xbox and Game Pass enthusiast
The Xbox interface, dedicated controls, PC Game Pass access, Play Anywhere support and cloud options make the Ally X the most direct fit for someone already invested in Xbox services—provided they understand that console ownership alone does not guarantee native installation.
Buy it if you are a multi-store PC gamer
Steam, Epic, Battle.net and other Windows storefronts are a genuine advantage. The Ally X is better suited than a SteamOS-first handheld to a library spread across several PC launchers, as long as you accept the account and launcher management that comes with Windows.
Choose Steam Deck if SteamOS matters more than maximum flexibility
Steam-first players who value straightforward navigation and a more console-like suspend-and-resume experience may prefer the Steam Deck. It remains important to check compatibility for multiplayer games, anti-cheat systems and Windows-only launchers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConsider the original ROG Ally X if it is heavily discounted
The older model is worth considering when its price falls substantially and you do not need the newer Xbox-specific controls, software identity or processor. Existing owners should not assume that the newer device represents a proportionate upgrade.
Choose a gaming laptop if you need a laptop first
A gaming laptop remains the better tool for keyboard-and-mouse productivity, a larger display and stronger plugged-in graphics performance. The Ally X makes sense when built-in gamepad controls and handheld portability are central requirements.
Verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a powerful, well-equipped premium handheld PC and a meaningful step toward a portable Xbox experience. Its 80Wh battery, 24GB of RAM, 1TB replaceable SSD and controller-inspired design give it a compelling hardware foundation.
But the device is held back by the gap between Xbox’s console promise and Windows 11’s PC-level friction. The Xbox full-screen interface makes the experience more approachable, yet launchers, updates, account switching, input quirks and game-specific compatibility remain part of ownership.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buy the Ally X if you want Xbox integration and broad Windows game access and are comfortable treating it as a Windows gaming PC. Choose the Steam Deck if a simpler SteamOS experience matters more. Do not buy it expecting every Xbox console game to install and run locally.
