VALORANT has already moved to Unreal Engine 5. Riot completed the migration from Unreal Engine 4.27 to Unreal Engine 5.3 with Patch 11.02 on July 29, 2025. The change is technically significant, but it was not designed to turn VALORANT into a dramatically different-looking game overnight.
For players, the immediate result is best understood as a foundation upgrade: Riot reported small performance improvements, a substantially smaller installed footprint, and updated system requirements. The larger benefits—better development tools, easier engine maintenance, and room for future features—are primarily behind the scenes for now.

The short answer
Yes, VALORANT moved to UE5. Patch 11.02 replaced Unreal Engine 4.27 with Unreal Engine 5.3, and Riot skipped Patch 11.01 while preparing the release. The migration went live on July 29, 2025.

Riot explicitly said the move had no direct implication for the player experience beyond small performance improvements. The studio also emphasized that preserving VALORANT’s day-to-day competitive experience was important.

So the best way to describe the update is this: a major development upgrade for Riot, but a deliberately understated immediate upgrade for players.
What changed with Patch 11.02?
Riot’s engine migration introduced several concrete changes:
- VALORANT moved from Unreal Engine 4.27 to Unreal Engine 5.3.
- The update included what Riot described as small performance improvements.
- The UE5 installation download was larger than a normal patch.
- Riot said the installed disk footprint would be approximately half its previous size after the update.
- System requirements were updated.
The unusually large download was a one-time consequence of replacing core engine files. Riot expected subsequent patch downloads to return to their normal size. The reduced disk footprint refers to the installed game size, not necessarily the size of every download or every platform configuration.
The update was also why Patch 11.01 was skipped. Riot used that time to prepare the engine transition rather than ship the usual patch cadence.
Why doesn’t VALORANT look completely different?
An engine upgrade is not the same thing as a visual remake. A game’s appearance depends on several separate layers:
- Engine technology: The underlying tools and systems used to render, simulate, package, and develop the game.
- Assets: Character models, environments, textures, effects, animations, and materials.
- Rendering features: Lighting, shadows, geometry systems, and post-processing choices enabled by the developers.
- Art direction: The visual style and design decisions that determine how the game should look.
- Gameplay readability: The contrast, silhouettes, effects, and visual consistency players rely on to react quickly.
Patch 11.02 primarily changed the first category. Riot did not present the migration as a wholesale replacement of the game’s assets or art direction.

That restraint is especially important in a competitive shooter. A dramatic lighting overhaul or more complex effects could make maps harder to read, obscure opponents, or create inconsistent visual conditions across graphics settings. VALORANT was built around a controlled visual style and broad hardware accessibility, so the newest engine features are not automatically desirable if they interfere with clarity or performance.
Riot’s earlier technical explanation of VALORANT’s foundation describes custom rendering work, strict performance priorities, and a design intended to run across a wide range of hardware. Moving to UE5 does not require Riot to enable every feature associated with the engine.
Does VALORANT use Lumen or Nanite now?
The available Riot announcements do not confirm that VALORANT uses Lumen, Nanite, or any other specific UE5 rendering system. It would therefore be misleading to treat the engine migration as proof that those features are active in the game.
UE5 provides access to newer technology and tools, but Riot still decides which systems fit VALORANT’s requirements. The official announcement supports a narrower conclusion: VALORANT now runs on UE5.3, while Riot has not announced a massive graphical transformation tied to the migration itself.
Will VALORANT run faster?
Riot’s messaging is positive but qualified. The Patch 11.02 notes refer to small performance improvements. In an Unreal Engine interview, Riot engineers said they expected better frame rates and more consistent performance across different hardware configurations.

Your result can depend on:
- CPU and GPU performance
- Resolution and graphics settings
- Drivers and operating-system configuration
- Background applications and overlays
- Thermal throttling
- Whether the system is CPU-limited or GPU-limited
Competitive players should pay attention to frame-time consistency as well as the average FPS counter. A higher average does not necessarily mean a smoother or more responsive game if frame-time spikes remain.
The responsible expectation is that Riot’s engine work may improve performance and consistency, but the UE5 label should not be treated as a promise that every player will see the same result—or even a visible improvement on every configuration.
What is the upgrade mainly for?
Much of the migration’s value is developer-facing first. Riot described benefits including improved development iteration, better profiling and diagnostic workflows through tools such as Unreal Insights, and a stronger foundation for future content and systems.
Those improvements can eventually reach players through more efficient updates, performance work, new content, or features that would be harder to build and maintain on the older engine. But “provides a foundation for” is not the same as “guarantees.” Riot has not used the cited announcements to promise a particular future mode, replay system, visual technology, or release schedule.
This is why the upgrade can be important even if a player launches the game and sees almost no visual difference. The most consequential changes may be in the tools Riot uses to make the next several years of VALORANT.
Did the migration change VALORANT’s competitive feel?
There is no basis in the cited engine announcements for claiming that UE5 changed recoil, movement, hit registration, weapon behavior, or input timing. Riot’s stated goal was to preserve the normal player experience.

VALORANT’s competitive behavior depends on far more than the engine version, including server performance, networking, client frame times, input devices, animation systems, and game-specific code. Any claim about changed gunplay or latency needs separate evidence from a particular patch or controlled testing.

Riot’s earlier technical material describes a competitive architecture built around a 128-tick-per-second server target, strict client and server performance budgets, custom rendering, and readability across quality settings. The UE5 migration should be viewed as infrastructure work—not as VALORANT 2.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do VALORANT players need a new PC?
Usually not solely because of the UE5 migration. Riot’s current official specifications remain modest compared with those of modern AAA PC games.
| Target | CPU examples | GPU examples |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum / 30 FPS | Intel i3-540; AMD Athlon 200GE | Intel HD 4000; AMD Radeon R5 220 |
| Recommended / 60 FPS | Intel i3-4150; AMD Ryzen 3 1200 | NVIDIA GeForce GT 730; AMD Radeon R7 240 |
| High-end / 144+ FPS | Intel i5-9400F; AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti; AMD Radeon R7 370; Intel Arc A310 |
The current listed requirements also include Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11 64-bit, SSE 4.2 or AVX support, 4 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of VRAM. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot.
These categories are targets, not guarantees that every listed configuration will deliver identical performance in every match. For high-refresh competitive play, CPU performance, memory configuration, frame-time consistency, monitor refresh rate, and system latency can matter as much as raw GPU power.
Consider an upgrade if your computer falls below Riot’s requirements, cannot maintain your monitor’s desired refresh rate, suffers severe frame-time spikes, or uses an unsupported operating-system configuration. Do not assume you need a new graphics card simply because the game changed engines.

What should you check if performance is poor?
Before replacing hardware, work through the basic variables that can affect any PC game:
- Update your GPU drivers and Windows.
- Check whether your monitor is actually operating at its intended refresh rate.
- Recheck VALORANT’s resolution, display mode, and graphics settings.
- Monitor CPU and GPU usage, temperatures, and frame-time behavior.
- Close unnecessary overlays and background applications.
- Test a consistent graphics preset rather than changing several settings at once.
- On Windows 11, verify TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot if the system reports a compatibility problem.
Reinstalling the Riot Client should generally be a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a small FPS fluctuation.
Was there a launch-period issue?
Patch 11.04, released on August 19, 2025, documented an issue in which resolution and display settings could reset the first time a player launched after updating to UE5. Riot instructed affected players to restore their preferred settings and said it would not issue a fix for that particular issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat was a documented post-migration edge case, not evidence that every player continues to experience a UE5-related problem. If your display looks wrong after an update, checking resolution, refresh rate, fullscreen or windowed mode, and other display settings is sensible.
What the UE5 move does—and does not—mean
Supported by Riot’s announcements
- VALORANT moved from UE4.27 to UE5.3 in Patch 11.02.
- The migration went live on July 29, 2025.
- Riot reported small performance improvements and expected better consistency across hardware.
- The installed disk footprint was expected to fall by approximately half.
- The new engine provides a foundation for future development and improved tooling.
Not established by the available evidence
- A guaranteed FPS increase for every PC.
- A massive graphics overhaul.
- Confirmed Lumen or Nanite implementation.
- A change to recoil, hit registration, movement, or gunplay caused by UE5.
- A requirement for most players to buy new hardware.
Verdict
VALORANT’s move to Unreal Engine 5 is real and important, but its importance is mostly structural rather than immediately visual. Riot traded UE4.27 for UE5.3 to improve its development foundation, tooling, maintenance, and future flexibility while preserving the competitive experience players already know.
Expect a smaller installed game and possible performance or consistency benefits—not a cinematic remake. The engine upgrade may become more visible through future updates, but Patch 11.02 itself was infrastructure, not a graphics reboot.
