The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) is not yet a year into public retail availability as of October 11, 2026: ASUS announced an October 16, 2025 on-shelf date. So a “1-year review” or claim of 12 months of daily use cannot be substantiated from the public timeline alone. Launch-era specifications and reviews offer useful early impressions, but they cannot tell you how the handheld holds up after a year.
Why this is not yet a 1-year retail review
ASUS announced that the ROG Xbox Ally X would be available on shelves on October 16, 2025, with availability varying by country. On October 11, 2026, that date was still five days away from its first anniversary. The device is the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA, and should not be confused with the earlier ROG Ally X. ASUS’s launch announcement supplies the retail timing and model context.

A reviewer could have used a pre-release unit for longer, but a claim of daily use for 12 months would need to identify that unit’s start date and explain that the period predates public retail availability. Without that documented experience, the fair answer is that a full year of ownership has not been established.

ASUS lists an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1 TB M.2 SSD, an 80 Wh battery, USB4, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, and a UHS-II microSD reader for the RC73XA. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish game frame rates, battery runtime, or how much capacity remains after prolonged use. Check the exact regional SKU before buying. In its launch announcement, ASUS described an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 5 APU with 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores and an integrated NPU. Those architectural details help identify the platform, but they are not a substitute for performance measurements at a specified resolution and power setting.
What launch-era reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Comfort and controls
Windows Central’s launch-era reviewer praised the shaped grips and reported a comfortable hold. That is a useful initial ergonomics impression, not proof that controls or grips remain comfortable or durable after daily use over a year. The review also documented the USB4 and USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports and UHS-II reader, and reported that the internal SSD was accessible after opening the device. Read Windows Central’s review for those attributed observations.

Performance
PC Gamer reported the strongest comparative benchmark performance among the handhelds in its launch-era test set, while noting that the high-performance advantage was not dramatic. That finding applies to its test configuration, software, and comparison group; it is not a universal result for every game or a guarantee of sustained performance. PC Gamer’s review provides the relevant benchmark context.

The device combines Windows PC gaming with Xbox-oriented features. Xbox describes local play, cloud play where available, and remote play from an Xbox console. In an August 2025 announcement, Xbox said Play Anywhere covered more than 1,000 games across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, including supported handhelds. That is a dated company statement, not a promise that every game works on this device or that the current catalog, eligibility, subscriptions, or cloud availability remain unchanged. Check current regional terms and game support. Xbox’s August 2025 feature announcement describes the planned experience; its launch article gives availability context, including 45 countries at launch, which is not a current availability figure. Xbox Wire’s launch article is dated October 16, 2025.

What a year of daily use would need to establish
Neither ASUS’s official materials nor the cited launch-era reviews establish battery aging, control wear, failure rates, or sustained daily-use reliability after 12 months. An honest long-term review would need documented use over a defined period and observations of those issues; launch impressions and specifications cannot fill that gap.
- Battery: 80 Wh is the listed capacity, not a measured runtime or a report of capacity retention after repeated charging.
- Durability: Launch reviews do not establish failure rates or long-term wear on controls, ports, or grips.
- Upgrades: ASUS lists an M.2 SSD and UHS-II reader; Windows Central reported SSD access after opening the unit. Confirm compatible parts and installation requirements for the specific SKU before attempting an upgrade.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally X worth buying?
The evidence supports an early assessment, not a verdict based on one year of ownership. On paper, the RC73XA pairs a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform with 24 GB of memory, 1 TB of storage, an 80 Wh battery, and a mix of USB and microSD expansion. Launch-era reviews offer positive initial grip impressions and strong comparative benchmark results within one reviewer’s test set, alongside reported early software shortcomings. Whether those trade-offs suit you depends on current game compatibility, regional Xbox features, and the price available where you live; the cited material does not establish current pricing or a year of reliability.
