For the Phase 8 setup covered by Wowhead’s specialist guides, build around Just a Flesh Wound on chest and Blade Dance on legs. Together they provide the tank-focused threat tools and avoidance-based defense that define the role. From there, choose runes and gear for the pull: keeping threat on a pack, staying alive through heavy hits, and maintaining defensive abilities all compete for your energy and combo points.
This guide reflects Wowhead’s Phase 8 recommendations last updated in April 2025, on pages labeled Patch 1.15.8. It is not confirmation that those recommendations remain unchanged in October 2026; check current in-game tooltips and patch changes before relying on a specific build.
What makes a rogue tank work?
Rogue tanking in Season of Discovery is an avoidance-oriented role. Rather than depending primarily on high armor, the cited guide describes rogues as leaning on dodges and parries, with runes adding threat, a taunt, and mitigation. The result is a tank who must handle two jobs at once: establish threat across enemies and keep defensive effects active while managing energy and combo points.
The main defensive vulnerability follows from that profile: a stun that prevents you from dodging or parrying can sharply reduce your avoidance-based mitigation. Treat stun-heavy situations as a reason to be more cautious about incoming damage and the healer’s capacity.

Which runes should a rogue tank use?
Wowhead’s Phase 8 guide identifies two foundational runes and several slots where the best choice depends on the group and encounter. The recommendations below are guide advice, not a universal setup for every pull.
| Slot or situation | Recommended option | Why or when |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Just a Flesh Wound | Core tank rune; it increases threat and changes Feint into Tease, a taunt. |
| Legs | Blade Dance | Core defensive choice; the Phase 8 guide attributes a 10% parry bonus to it and describes physical damage reduction in combination with Just a Flesh Wound. |
| Gloves | Main Gauche | The guide’s tank-focused recommendation. |
| Wrist | Unfair Advantage | The guide’s recommended wrist rune. |
| Feet | Rolling with the Punches | Favored by the guide for the added health. |
| Rings | Defense Specialization and the weapon skill matching your main-hand weapon | Recommended ring choices in the Phase 8 build. |
For other rune slots, choose for the job in front of you rather than copying a fixed list:

- A pre paid, 60 day subscription to world of warcraft
- Requires world of warcraft standard game box contains game card only
- Combo-point support: Honor Among Thieves fits groups that reliably generate combo points.
- More dependable solo or weaker-group energy: Focused Attacks or Combat Potency can suit situations with less reliable group support.
- Opening or sustained multi-target threat: Blunderbuss is suggested for opening threat and multiple enemies; Crimson Tempest can fit when several targets survive long enough for its bleed.
- Pack damage and resource interactions: Fan of Knives is an option in multi-target situations where its interaction with Focused Attacks is useful. Shuriken Toss is described as a common dungeon multi-target choice.
- Mobility and add pickup: Shadowstep may be more useful when reaching or collecting adds matters more than a direct damage option.
How do you hold threat on a pack?
Multi-target tanking is harder than a single-target rotation because threat has to be established on several enemies while you preserve resources and keep defense running. The Phase 8 overview’s baseline is to build combo points with Main Gauche and Sinister Strike, maintain Blade Dance and Slice and Dice, and spend spare points on Eviscerate. For packs, it recommends using Shuriken Toss or Blunderbuss to build threat across multiple enemies and using Tease when a target breaks away.
- Open with a tool suited to the pull. Blunderbuss is one of the guide’s suggested choices for opening threat on multiple enemies; the appropriate opener depends on the selected runes and encounter.
- Spread attention across the enemies. Hit the pack rather than tunneling on one target, using multi-target threat tools where appropriate.
- Establish Blade Dance early. The guide advises applying it early, then building toward longer-duration applications when the situation allows.
- Maintain Slice and Dice and spend spare combo points. Use Eviscerate when you have points to spare and the defensive and threat needs of the pull permit it.
- Taunt a runner with Tease. Just a Flesh Wound turns Feint into Tease, giving you a taunt for an enemy leaving your control.
Target switching creates a resource trade-off because combo points are lost when you change targets. In a January 17, 2024 World of Warcraft Forums post, player Saurosh summarized the priority as “Energy > Combo Points” and suggested spending only one or two points on finishers in multi-mob situations when that helps preserve energy for the next target. This is dated player advice from an early phase, not a current official rotation; use it as a way to think about resource costs, not as a fixed rule.

How should you adjust for single-target fights and group needs?
Single-target and multi-target encounters place different demands on the build. A group that supplies reliable combo points can make Honor Among Thieves more attractive; solo play or a group with weaker support may favor Focused Attacks or Combat Potency. Packs reward broad threat tools, while single targets put more emphasis on maintaining the core defensive and threat cycle without wasting energy on target changes.
Use the healer’s capacity and the encounter’s damage as part of the decision. If survival is the concern, favor defensive choices and play conservatively around stuns or hard-hitting pulls. If damage dealers have to pause because threat is falling behind, consider more offensive options where the encounter allows it.

What stats and gear should you prioritize?
The Phase 8 overview prioritizes Agility, then Defense, Stamina, and Hit Chance. Its rationale is that Agility and Defense can contribute to both offense and defense, while stamina supports survival. The gear guide treats this as a balance rather than a single best-in-slot rule: use more defense when a large pull or hard-hitting boss threatens survival or strains healers, and consider more offense if threat is forcing damage dealers to stop attacking.
Wowhead’s Phase 8 overview gives these named examples, with its own judgments about their bonuses and role:
