Choose the conviction that fits the character you want to play, then concentrate on that branch before it reaches Votary. Dogmatic, Iconoclast and Heretical are not just dialogue labels: each has its own worldview, rank rewards and story reactivity. Early choices can be mixed safely, but the first branch to reach rank III (Votary) becomes your main conviction and prevents the other two from advancing beyond rank II (Adherent), according to the community conviction encyclopedia.
Pick Dogmatic for uncompromising Imperial orthodoxy, Iconoclast for compassionate idealism, or Heretical for a deliberate descent into Chaos. There is no source-backed evidence that one path is universally strongest or guarantees the best ending. Your decision should balance role-play, the abilities you want and how much flexibility you are willing to give up at Votary.

What convictions do in Rogue Trader
Rogue Trader tracks three convictions: Dogmatic, Iconoclast and Heretical. Your character gains points through dialogue decisions, exploration events and colony development; the Heretical branch can also grow through corrupted items and forbidden knowledge. Those points alter which conviction ranks you reach, and each rank grants an ability or another mechanical bonus as well as influencing narrative reactions.
The labels are broad outlooks rather than a simple good-versus-evil meter. A Dogmatic decision can be politically ruthless, an Iconoclast decision can create danger despite good intentions, and a Heretical decision represents more than harmless contrarianism: it can signal corruption and a willingness to embrace the Warp. Treat the option in front of you as a statement about your protagonist, not as an automatic morality score.

The exact threshold model and named rewards below come from an author-maintained GameFAQs guide, while the advancement lock and broader conviction behavior are described by the community encyclopedia. They are useful planning references, not an official promise that every value remains identical in every current version, DLC combination or platform build.
Dogmatic, Iconoclast and Heretical at a glance

These descriptions are thematic guides. Individual scenes may offer a surprising or morally complicated choice, so read the wording and consequences in context instead of selecting by label alone.
Which path should you choose?
Choose Dogmatic if you want an Imperial hardliner
Dogmatic is the natural fit for a protagonist who believes civilization survives only through obedience, doctrine and force. You are comfortable treating the Imperium’s institutions as necessary, even when they are brutal, and you want your Rogue Trader to respond to alien influence or suspected heresy with suppression rather than negotiation.
This path suits a disciplined officer, zealous noble, uncompromising lawkeeper or any character whose definition of “protecting humanity” includes enforcing the rules that hold the Imperium together. It is also the most setting-forward choice if you want your decisions to sound like they came from an Imperial loyalist rather than a modern liberal or a Chaos convert.
Choose Iconoclast if you want a compassionate idealist
Iconoclast is for players who put human dignity and practical compassion ahead of institutional obedience. You may save people an authority figure would sacrifice, oppose cruelty even when it is legal and look for a humane solution in a universe that rarely rewards one.
The branch does not turn the campaign into a safe heroic story. Protecting one group can endanger another, and challenging a powerful institution can create political or military consequences. Select Iconoclast because you want to make those attempts, not because you expect every merciful decision to produce a clean victory.
Choose Heretical if you want a Chaos corruption story
Heretical is the deliberate fall: curiosity about the Warp becomes acceptance of corrupted power, forbidden knowledge or Chaos-aligned goals. It is the best match for a protagonist who wants to test limits, bargain with dangerous forces or let ambition hollow out their original principles.

Some players choose it for the most overtly transgressive role-play in the game. Others use it for a tragedy in which the protagonist begins with understandable motives and gradually rationalizes worse decisions. Either approach works, but do not treat Heretical choices as consequence-free alternatives to the other two branches.
If you are undecided
Role-play your early decisions honestly rather than forcing every answer into one color. Mixed points are allowed before the lock-in, and the game provides many opportunities through dialogue, exploration and colony projects. Once one branch approaches Votary, decide which worldview and reward set matters most, then favor that branch so you do not reach the lock with an accidental or unwanted lead.
How conviction ranks and thresholds work
The GameFAQs guide lists five milestones for each branch:

The values are reported by the guide and should be treated as version-sensitive reference numbers, not an official patch specification. They show why a few scattered choices do not matter as much as your direction near 200 points: reaching Votary in one branch determines which branch can continue to Fanatic and Zealot.

Each rank awards an ability or another bonus. The rewards are part of the build decision, but the available evidence does not establish a complete, current damage comparison among all three paths. Do not choose a conviction solely from an old tier list or assume a named ability is still the strongest option after every balance change and DLC interaction.
Named rewards by conviction
Dogmatic rewards
- Follower — Grim Determination: the guide describes a chance to survive with one wound.
- Adherent — Absolution: associated in the guide with burning or bonus fire damage.
- Votary — Path of Redemption: described as reducing Momentum expenditure.
- Fanatic — Piercing Resolution: described as enabling attacks that ignore armor.
- Zealot — Instrument of His Will: described as temporary immunity to daemon and xenos attacks.
The combination makes Dogmatic attractive to players who want an Imperial-themed combat identity, but the guide’s descriptions do not constitute a current full build analysis. Their value depends on your party, difficulty, equipment and the version you are playing.
Heretical rewards
- Follower — Resource Preservation.
- Adherent — Destroy the Weak.
- Votary — Gifts of the Warp.
- Fanatic — Daemonopathy.
- Zealot — Power From Beyond the Veil.
The available guide names these rewards but does not provide a complete, comparable effect breakdown for every rank in the supplied material. Select Heretical for its Chaos progression and the way those rewards support that fantasy, not from an assumption that the names alone prove a superior combat route.

Iconoclast rewards
- Follower — Above the Thundering Guns.
- Adherent — Master of Command.
- Votary — Courage and Steel.
- Fanatic — Transcend the Potential.
- Zealot — Excellence.
These names support the Iconoclast’s theme of human potential and leadership. As with the other branches, the reviewed material does not compare their latest performance in every build or difficulty setting.

Before rank III, you can collect a mixture of conviction points. The important boundary is Votary at 200 points: once one branch reaches it, that branch becomes the main focus and the other two are capped at Adherent. In practical terms, you can obtain their early rewards, but you cannot continue those branches to Votary, Fanatic or Zealot in the same progression.
This is not a cosmetic choice. It determines which later ability rewards are available and can change how your protagonist is treated in future scenes. If you want the top reward from a specific conviction, avoid letting another branch reach 200 first.
Choices are not always interchangeable. The appendix to the same guide documents decisions that are conditional on an existing rank, mutually exclusive, or dependent on particular companions or DLC. A route copied from another player’s playthrough may therefore diverge even when you choose similar principles. Use a route as a checklist of opportunities, not as a guarantee that every option will appear.
How patch 1.3 changed point planning
Owlcat’s official Update 1.3 notes state that many conviction choices in Acts III and IV were changed to award significantly more Dogmatic, Heretical or Iconoclast points. The same notes say projects that awarded conviction points were doubled.

Owlcat also explained that choices already made and projects already completed would not immediately grant the missing points. That avoided involuntarily switching a character’s conviction; the additional points would arrive the next time you selected an option for that conviction.
The notes establish the adjustment, but they do not provide a complete current point table for every scene, DLC and later update. Plan around the Votary lock, monitor your actual in-game totals and avoid promising yourself an exact 500-point route based only on pre-1.3 advice.

A practical decision framework
Step 1: define the protagonist’s non-negotiable principle
Ask what your Rogue Trader does when compassion, law and survival conflict. If the answer is “obey Imperial doctrine,” start Dogmatic. If it is “save people even when authority says no,” start Iconoclast. If it is “take forbidden power and see where it leads,” start Heretical.
Step 2: identify the reward tier you actually want
Decide whether you only want an early flavor reward or intend to reach Fanatic and Zealot. The first two ranks are compatible with experimentation; the later three belong to the branch that wins the Votary race. If a specific named ability is central to your build, make that branch your long-term target before you approach 200 points.
Step 3: allow mixed choices while the stakes are low
There is no need to reject an otherwise perfect role-playing response merely to keep an immaculate score at the start. Explore, complete colony projects and let the character develop. The risk is not having a few points in another branch; the risk is reaching Votary in the wrong branch.
Step 4: reassess before the lock
When one conviction is close to 200, compare its lead with the path you actually want. Check whether a planned dialogue decision, exploration event or colony project awards points, and remember that companion or DLC conditions can alter which choices are available. From this point, favor the intended branch consistently.
Step 5: accept the consequences of the chosen identity
After Votary, stop expecting to maximize all three branches. The trade-off is deliberate: a clearer worldview and access to the chosen branch’s higher rewards in exchange for losing further advancement elsewhere.

Choosing by “good,” “neutral” and “evil” labels
Iconoclast is not a guarantee that every outcome is good, Dogmatic is not simply a practical middle ground and Heretical is not harmless rebellion. Choose the worldview you can sustain across difficult scenes.

Assuming mixed convictions can all reach Zealot
They cannot once one branch reaches Votary, according to the community encyclopedia. Mixed early play is safe; mixed late investment can leave you with a main branch you did not intend.
Following a launch-era point route without checking version context
Patch 1.3 substantially increased many Acts III and IV awards and doubled point-granting projects. Older totals may undercount what your current game awards.
Treating every choice as universally available
Some decisions depend on rank, companions or DLC and some exclude one another. A missing option is not necessarily a mistake in your playthrough.

Named rewards matter, but their usefulness depends on your build and the current balance state. The available guides do not prove that one branch outperforms the others in all circumstances.
Recommended choices for different players
- New to the setting: Dogmatic provides the clearest Imperial role-play frame; Iconoclast is a good fit if you instinctively prioritize civilians and individual lives.
- 40K lore enthusiast: choose Dogmatic for an orthodox loyalist, Iconoclast for a deliberate challenge to Imperial cruelty, or Heretical for a character whose relationship with Chaos is the central story.
- Build-focused player: compare the named rewards with your intended party and weapon plan, then commit before 200 points. Do not rely on an unverified universal tier list.
- Replay player: use different lock-in choices to make each run distinct; the advancement cap ensures that one character cannot fully experience all three rank tracks in a single progression.
- Unsure whether to embrace Chaos: remain mixed while you learn the campaign, but remember that Heretical points can also come from corrupted items and forbidden knowledge, not only explicit dialogue.
What is and is not established about endings
The reviewed sources support broad themes, rank rewards and the Votary advancement lock. They do not establish complete current ending requirements or prove that one conviction produces the universally best ending. Story consequences can also depend on choices outside the conviction system, companions, DLC and the game version.
That uncertainty is a reason to avoid choosing for an alleged “best ending.” Choose for the character and the progression you want; treat ending claims that lack a current, specific source with caution.
Bottom line: pick the story first, then protect the rank you want
Dogmatic is the right answer for an uncompromising Imperial loyalist. Iconoclast is the right answer for a compassionate idealist who resists needless cruelty. Heretical is the right answer for a Chaos corruption or forbidden-power story. All three provide mechanical rewards, and none is proven to be universally strongest.
Mix convictions while your character is taking shape, but make a deliberate decision before one branch reaches 200 points. Once Votary is unlocked, the other two branches stop at Adherent, so the conviction that wins that race determines your higher-rank abilities and the identity of the rest of the run.
