To respec in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, speak with High Factotum Janris Danrok aboard your flagship and select the respecialization dialogue option. The built-in service rebuilds level-up choices such as skills and talents. It does not change a character’s selected Archetype, and companions remain tied to their own preselected Archetypes. Each use costs Profit Factor, with the price increasing over time; the available references do not establish a reliable current price schedule.
If you need a deeper reset that starts a character at level 0, the community ToyBox mod documents an option for that purpose. It is not part of the vanilla game, and its compatibility must be checked against your current game version and platform.

What respecialization means in Rogue Trader
Rogue Trader’s vanilla respec is a rebuild of choices made while leveling, not a return to the character-creation screen. The documented reset covers selected skills and talents. It is useful when a build took the wrong talent, a skill was raised for a plan that no longer works, or a companion’s level-up choices no longer fit the role you want them to play.

The service has an important boundary: it does not let you replace the character’s Archetype. That restriction applies to the protagonist and to companions. A companion’s Archetype is preselected, so respecialization can rearrange later choices within that framework but cannot turn the companion into a different Archetype.

- Not reset: the selected Archetype for the player or a companion.

That distinction answers the common question about taking a companion “back to level 1.” The ordinary service is not documented as a full level-0 or character-creation reset. It reworks leveling decisions while preserving the character’s Archetype.
How to respec your player character in the vanilla game
You do not need a separate menu, consumable or physical item. The route is an NPC conversation on your ship.
- Reach your flagship. Respecialization is performed aboard the flagship, so travel to the ship before looking for the service.
- Find High Factotum Janris Danrok. Danrok is the NPC identified as the normal in-game respecialization route.
- Start the conversation. Speak to Danrok rather than opening a general character-management screen.
- Choose the respecialization dialogue option. The wording can depend on the game’s current localization or interface presentation, but it is the conversation choice that offers respecialization.
- Review the proposed rebuild. Check which skills and talents will be reassigned and confirm that the Archetype shown is the one you already have. The vanilla service does not provide an Archetype swap.
- Accept the transaction only after checking the cost. The game charges Profit Factor, and later uses cost more. If you are saving Profit Factor for trade or another purchase, leave the conversation without confirming and decide when the expense is worthwhile.
- Reallocate the available level-up choices. Spend the returned choices on the skills and talents you actually intend to use, then verify the finished character before leaving the conversation.
The practical result is a corrected leveling plan, not a new origin story or a new starting identity. If the problem is the Archetype itself, Danrok’s normal service cannot solve it; you would need to use a different character or an optional modded approach with a deeper reset.
What the vanilla respec can and cannot change
Skills and talents selected while leveling
The guide’s documented scope is the skills and talents chosen during advancement. This is the part of a build most players are trying to repair: a talent that does not work with the current weapon plan, a skill spread that leaves a role underperforming, or a companion whose later choices duplicate another party member.
Before confirming, treat the conversation as a complete rebuild of the choices the game makes available through leveling. Plan the replacement selections first so you do not spend Profit Factor and then discover that the desired talent chain requires a different prerequisite or a different order of choices.
Archetype
The selected Archetype is fixed by the vanilla service. A respec therefore cannot convert a companion from its preselected Archetype into another one, nor can it change the player character’s chosen Archetype. This is the most important limitation to check before paying for the service.

Character creation
The available documentation describes respecialization as a reset of leveling skills and talents, not a full character-creation reset. Do not assume that the service will recreate the character from the beginning or provide a general-purpose editor for every original choice. If your objective is a level-0 rebuild, the documented route is a mod feature rather than the normal in-game conversation.

Companions use the same shipboard route: take the party to High Factotum Janris Danrok and choose the respecialization option. The service is not a separate companion menu, and the guide’s rules apply to companions as well as the protagonist.
A companion respec is most useful when you want to repair the companion’s level-up skills and talents while keeping the role implied by that companion’s preselected Archetype. For example, you can rebuild the choices that support the companion’s intended function, remove an awkward talent path, or avoid duplicating skills already covered by the rest of the party. You cannot use the vanilla service to replace the companion’s Archetype.
- Can a companion be respecialized? Yes. The same Danrok conversation is the documented route.
- Can a companion be taken to a completely fresh level-0 state? Not through the documented vanilla service. A level-0 option is documented for ToyBox, an optional mod.
- Can the companion’s Archetype be changed? No. The Archetype remains the companion’s preselected one under the vanilla rules.
- Does the companion respec use the same currency? The guide describes respec costs in Profit Factor; it does not provide a separate companion pricing system.
Profit Factor cost and the Fellowship of the Void discount
Every respecialization uses Profit Factor, the game’s trading currency. The guide states that each respec costs more Profit Factor than the previous one. That means repeated experimentation has an opportunity cost: a build you can freely test once may be expensive to revise several times later.
No reliable current numerical price schedule or formula is established in the available material, so there is no defensible universal number to quote for a first, second or later respec. The amount shown in your own Danrok conversation is the figure that matters for your save, difficulty, progression state and installed version.
Owlcat’s notes also identify a Fellowship of the Void vendor discount that affects respec cost. Apply that qualification to any calculation: the effective amount can depend on whether the discount is active for your game state. Because the references do not specify the exact percentage, do not plan around a guessed reduction.

A sensible order of operations is to plan the replacement build outside the conversation, then speak with Danrok only when you are ready to confirm. That prevents paying an increasing Profit Factor cost for a trial-and-error sequence.
Historical free respecs after major updates
Major mechanical updates have sometimes included a temporary safety net for existing saves. Owlcat’s Rogue Trader 1.1.28 and 1.2.0.25 patch notes describe a one-time free respecialization ability for members of the current party in existing saves. The purpose was to let players repair builds after substantial system changes, and the ability lasted until the party had access to the normal respecialization method.

This should not be read as a permanent, recurring free use for every player. It was an update-related measure tied to existing saves and the transition to the ordinary service. If a current save displays a special free-respec ability, use the in-game prompt as the authority for that save; otherwise, expect the normal Danrok route and its Profit Factor cost.
Vanilla respec versus the ToyBox level-0 option
ToyBox is a community mod whose listing documents an option to make respecialization start from level 0 for both the player character and companions. That goes deeper than the documented vanilla service, which resets leveling skills and talents but preserves Archetypes.

Choose vanilla when you only need to correct skills or talents and want the supported in-game route. Consider ToyBox only when the documented reset depth is necessary and you are prepared to manage mod compatibility and save safety yourself.

Using ToyBox for a deeper rebuild
The ToyBox listing documents the relevant feature, but it does not establish one universal installation procedure for every launcher, operating system or game update. Follow the live listing’s current installation instructions rather than copying an old guide, and confirm that the release supports your version of Rogue Trader.

- Back up your saves. Keep an untouched copy of important saves outside the game’s normal save location so that you can recover if a modded respec behaves unexpectedly.
- Install and enable ToyBox according to its current instructions. Do not assume that files or paths from an older release still apply after a game update.
- Locate the respec controls in ToyBox. The documented feature is an option to start respec at level 0 for the player character and companions.
- Use the level-0 setting deliberately. A deeper reset can affect far more selections than a normal Danrok rebuild. Record your intended progression before confirming.
- Test the save after the change. Check the character sheet, companion sheets, talents, skills and party behavior before overwriting your only save.
- Recheck compatibility after patches. Disable or update the mod only as directed by its current notes, and avoid assuming that a previously working release remains safe after a major game update.
The mod route is optional and unsupported by the vanilla respec conversation. If you only need to replace a few talents, the built-in service is the lower-risk choice. A level-0 reset is justified when the preserved Archetype and ordinary leveling reset leave you unable to achieve the build you actually want.

Correcting a talent path
Use Danrok when a key talent choice no longer matches your weapon, ability or party plan. Because the cost rises with repeated uses, identify the entire replacement path before confirming rather than changing one selection at a time.
Repairing a skill spread
A companion may have been assigned skills that are now covered by another party member, while an important skill is missing from the group. Reallocating the leveling choices can restore a useful division of responsibilities without changing the companion’s Archetype.
Adapting after a mechanical update
If a major patch changes mechanics and your existing choices no longer function as expected, check whether the save received the historical one-time free respecialization ability. If it did not, compare the cost at Danrok with the practical value of rebuilding the affected character.
Testing a new party composition
Respec can support a planned change in party roles, but it is not a free sandbox. The increasing Profit Factor cost makes a written plan valuable, especially when several companions need attention.

Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“Respec” does not mean “change Archetype”
The most frequent mistake is paying for the service while expecting a different Archetype. The vanilla rules preserve the player’s and each companion’s selected Archetype. Review that limitation before opening the confirmation prompt.
A free-use prompt is not a permanent benefit
The free ability described in the 1.1.28 and 1.2.0.25 notes was tied to major mechanical updates and existing saves. It should not be treated as a recurring free respec that every new save receives.
A level-0 reset is not the normal game behavior
The ordinary Danrok service is documented as a leveling-choice reset. The level-0 start is associated with ToyBox, so a guide or forum post describing it may be discussing a modded game rather than the vanilla rules.

Do not rely on an old cost table
The available references confirm increasing Profit Factor costs but do not establish a current numerical schedule. Always read the amount shown for your save at the time of confirmation.
Troubleshooting the respec option
Danrok does not show the option
- Confirm that you are speaking with High Factotum Janris Danrok aboard the flagship, not another officer or a station NPC.
- Check whether the party has reached the normal point at which the shipboard respecialization route is available.
- Look for a temporary free-respec ability on the affected character if you are loading an existing save created around a major mechanical update.
- Verify that a recent patch or mod has not changed the conversation or disabled the option; consult the current game and mod notes for your version.
The price is higher than expected
The documented rule is that successive respecs cost more Profit Factor. Read the current amount in Danrok’s confirmation screen and check whether the Fellowship of the Void vendor discount applies to your save. Do not substitute a price from an older guide.
The rebuilt character still feels wrong
First check whether the problem is an Archetype limitation. If the desired role requires a different Archetype, the vanilla service cannot provide it. If the Archetype is appropriate, review the complete skill-and-talent plan before spending Profit Factor again. For a genuine level-0 rebuild, evaluate ToyBox only after checking its current compatibility and backing up the save.
A pre-confirmation checklist
- Write down the skills and talents you intend to select.
- Confirm that the desired plan works within the character’s existing Archetype.
- Check the Profit Factor amount shown by Danrok, including any applicable Fellowship of the Void discount.
- Decide whether the documented vanilla depth is enough or whether you truly need ToyBox’s level-0 option.
- Keep a backup save before using a modded reset or committing an expensive rebuild.
- After respecializing, inspect the player and companion sheets and test the party before overwriting the backup.
Bottom line
For a normal, supported rebuild, visit High Factotum Janris Danrok on the flagship and choose respecialization. Expect to rework leveling skills and talents, pay an increasing amount of Profit Factor, and keep the existing Archetype for both the protagonist and companions. Historical patches sometimes granted a one-time free respec to party members in existing saves, but that is not a standing universal benefit. If you need a level-0 reset, ToyBox documents that option for the player and companions; verify its current compatibility before using it.
