Can I play PS3 games on PC?
With RPCS3, if the game and computer are suitable
RPCS3 is an open-source, multi-platform PS3 emulator. Its official site lists Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD, and cautions that performance depends on the device (RPCS3 official site). It runs games locally rather than streaming them from Sony.

Compatibility is not assigned just by a game’s name. RPCS3 says, “We track compatibility per Game IDs batched by Game Media, and not per Game Title.” A disc release and a digital release of the same game can therefore have separate records. Look up the exact release and read its notes on the RPCS3 Game Compatibility page before setting it up.
The project’s “Playable” label means games “can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches.” It is a compatibility classification, not a promise of identical performance on every computer. Statuses and game notes can change as the project is updated.

With Premium, through cloud streaming
Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page says the Classics Catalog includes PS3 games “available via streaming only” (PlayStation Plus games). Sony’s US membership materials describe streaming supported catalog games on PC as well as PlayStation consoles, but the eligible titles and availability are controlled by Sony (Getting started with PS Plus).
Do not treat Premium as a way to run a PS3 game file on your PC: it is a subscription streaming route. Before subscribing for a particular title, check that it is currently in the catalog, streamable on your device, and available in your account’s region. Can PS5 play PS3 games?
A PS5 can stream eligible PS3 Classics Catalog games through PlayStation Plus Premium where the service and title are available. It does not natively play PS3 discs, and streaming is not the same as running a PS3 version locally on the console. Sony describes its PS3 Classics Catalog games as streaming-only on its US PlayStation Plus games page.
Premium, broadband, and a currently eligible title are all required for this route. Sony’s US guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed and 15 Mbps for 1080p; those figures are service requirements, not a guarantee of a particular connection’s stability or picture quality. Sony notes that streaming quality and connectivity vary with the network.

Can I play PS3 games on PS Portal?
Not through Sony’s current PS Portal cloud-streaming support. Sony says, “No, currently only select PS5 titles are supported for streaming on PS Portal” (Cloud streaming on PS5 and PlayStation Portal). That limitation is distinct from PS5 support for eligible PS3 catalog streams.
Is RPCS3 compatible with my game?
- Identify the exact release. Find out whether you have a disc or digital version and locate its Game ID; the title name alone may not match the compatibility entry.
- Check the compatibility record. Search the RPCS3 compatibility list for that ID and media type, then read the game-specific notes.
- Interpret the status carefully. “Playable” means the project considers the game completable with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches. It does not establish how it will perform on your particular computer.
- Check current setup guidance before buying hardware. RPCS3’s FAQ includes detailed requirements but was last edited on 2020-04-29, so its figures should not be used as current shopping specifications. Consult the project’s current official site and the game’s notes instead (RPCS3 FAQ).
What about an original PS3?
A working original PS3 is the native-console option for playing PS3 discs and local PS3 software. It is separate from both PC emulation and Premium streaming. Sony’s support page listed PS3 system software version 4.93 as current on October 7, 2026, and provides official update methods (PS3 system software).

Which option should you choose?
- Choose RPCS3 if you want local play on a computer and your exact game release has suitable compatibility notes for your setup.
- Choose Premium streaming if your game is currently in the eligible catalog for your region and device, and you prefer Sony’s managed streaming route to configuring local emulation.
- Choose original PS3 hardware if you want the native console route for discs and local play.
