RPGs Are Simply Better When You’re an Idiot (Sometimes)

Some RPGs are more fun when you can get into the story before you have to master the system. Wanting fewer rules to hold in your head is not an intelligence test; it is a preference about where you want to spend your attention. “Idiot” is the joke in the title, not a judgment of players who want a clearer path into the game.

The useful question is not whether simple RPGs are better for everyone. It is which kinds of friction you want less of—and which kinds of depth you still enjoy.

Why the same RPG can feel easy to one person and exhausting to another

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 puts the point plainly: “The level of difficulty that a player experiences isn’t defined by the game.” Difficulty comes from the interaction between a player’s abilities and the barriers a game presents. A system that feels intuitive to one player may demand too much attention, memory, or precision from someone else.

That distinction matters because “hard” is not one thing. An RPG might have straightforward combat but complicated puzzles, survival meters, or a progression system that asks players to plan several steps ahead. A player may want a challenge in one area and less friction in another.

  • TRAVEL THROUGH A MAGICAL LAND: The generously sized board depicts the land of Talisman, 3 regions of enchanted locations. The board changes as players layer on Adventure cards with more places to encounter

There is no topic-specific statistic establishing that players enjoy RPGs more as complexity falls. The case for a simpler experience is personal: when rules or difficulty barriers keep you from the story, characters, or exploration you came for, reducing that friction can make the game more enjoyable for you.

In video games, look for the kind of difficulty you can change

When an RPG feels overwhelming, first identify what is getting in the way. Microsoft’s guidance names combat, puzzles, memory demands, survival meters, and progression as different sources of challenge. A difficulty setting that changes one system may not affect another, so check what an option actually adjusts rather than assuming “easy” removes every obstacle.

  • CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: This fantasy expansion pack features an innovative, choose-your-own adventure mechanic with 3 distinct endings based on your decisions
  • Combat: If fights are the barrier, look for settings that change enemy pressure or combat difficulty.
  • Puzzles: If the story stalls at environmental or logic challenges, see whether puzzle help or a separate puzzle setting is available.
  • Memory and tracking: Quest reminders, clear objective logs, or fewer simultaneous demands can matter more than reducing enemy strength.
  • Survival systems: If meters or resource management pull attention away from exploration, check whether those mechanics can be reduced or disabled.
  • Progression: If builds and upgrades are the hard part, look for guidance or simpler ways to make character decisions.

These options do not make a game automatically better or worse; they let players tune particular barriers. And an easier setting does not necessarily erase every meaningful choice or challenge. It changes the balance in the areas the game exposes.

For tabletop RPGs, the rulebook is part of the game

In a tabletop RPG, the group often learns by reading, discussing, and applying the rules together. A rulebook’s organization, vocabulary, examples, and teaching sequence can make a system feel approachable—or make each decision feel like a test before play can begin.

A 2025 paper by C. Casimiro, Michael Heron, and Carla Sousa examines how rulebooks affect learning and play. It frames cognitive load as one reason people may struggle to understand a game, and cautions against treating that struggle as a personal failing: a learner may be wrestling with the material’s expectations. The authors present recommendations as a conceptual contribution that still requires validation with diverse players in real settings, not as a proven formula.

So “rules-light” is a useful clue, but not a guarantee of accessibility. Fewer rules can reduce what a group must learn, while clear explanations and a well-organized book can make a more involved system easier to approach. A teacher or facilitator can also help distribute decisions and answer questions as they arise.

Simpler is a tradeoff, not a universal upgrade

There is a reason designers balance learnability against depth rather than simply removing every complication. In “The Grand Experiment” (2020), Mark Rosewater describes the goal as finding a middle ground: “The focus on complexity as I mentioned above is about finding the right middle ground where the game is simple enough for new players to learn the gameplay and complex enough for ample exploration by the experienced players.”

For a player, that means the best fit depends on what you want from the system. You may welcome a short route to character creation but still enjoy tactical combat. You may prefer a game that makes exploration rich while keeping bookkeeping light. Or you may enjoy mastering a dense ruleset because that mastery is part of the pleasure. Less complexity is not automatically more accessible, and greater complexity is not automatically more rewarding.

Decide what you want less of—and what you want to keep

Before choosing your next RPG or changing its settings, name the friction. Then look for a game or option that addresses that specific issue without stripping away the parts you enjoy.

  • Less to learn: Look for a short, clearly organized rules introduction and a game that can be taught in stages.
  • Less to track: Prioritize clear quest information, fewer simultaneous meters, or lighter bookkeeping.
  • Fewer decisions at once: Look for a system that introduces choices gradually, or a group that is comfortable helping with character-building decisions.
  • Less punishment for mistakes: In digital RPGs, investigate difficulty options by mechanic; at the table, ask how the group handles missed rules and uncertain calls.
  • Depth without overload: Keep the kind of complexity you find satisfying—such as tactical choices, character growth, or world exploration—and reduce the parts that feel like chores.

Digital and tabletop RPGs offer different ways to do this. A digital game may let you adjust combat or puzzles in its settings; a tabletop group depends more on the rulebook, how someone teaches it, and how the rules spread decisions across the table. Neither format is the best fit for every player.

For digital difficulty options, see Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108. For tabletop rulebook learning, consult the 2025 paper by Casimiro, Heron, and Sousa. Rosewater’s essays, “The Grand Experiment” and “Casual Play”, discuss learnability, complexity, teaching, and the attention games ask players to manage.
