Yes—the desktop GeForce RTX 4070 is substantially more powerful than the base PS5’s GPU. It has roughly 29 shader TFLOPS compared with the PS5’s 10.3 TFLOPS, stronger ray-tracing hardware, and access to NVIDIA DLSS features such as Super Resolution and Frame Generation. That does not mean an RTX 4070 PC automatically produces 2.8 times the PS5’s frame rate, because the RTX 4070 is only a graphics card while the PS5 is a complete, tightly optimized gaming system.

What is being compared?

This comparison uses the desktop GeForce RTX 4070 and the base PlayStation 5. It does not include the RTX 4070 SUPER, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, laptop RTX 4070, newer RTX 5070, or PS5 Pro. Those products have different performance characteristics.

The RTX 4070 launched in the United States in April 2023 with a starting graphics-card MSRP of $599, according to NVIDIA’s announcement. That was the price of the card alone—not a complete gaming PC. PS5 launch prices, meanwhile, covered a complete console. Neither historical launch price should be treated as a current September 2026 street price.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Super EVO OC Edition 12GB GDDR6X (PCIe 4.0, 12GB GDDR6X, DLSS 3, HDMI 2.1a, DisplayPort 1.4a, 2.5-Slot Design, Axial-tech Fan Design, 0dB Technology), 3 Year Warranty
  • Powered by NVIDIA DLSS3, ultra-efficient Ada Lovelace arch, and full ray tracing
  • 4th Generation Tensor Cores: Up to 4x performance with DLSS 3 vs. brute-force rendering
  • 3rd Generation RT Cores: Up to 2x ray tracing performance
  • OC edition: Boost Clock 2550 MHz (OC Mode)/ 2520 MHz (Default Mode)
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

Why 29 TFLOPS does not mean 2.8 times the FPS

On paper, 29 TFLOPS is approximately 2.8 times 10.3 TFLOPS. That establishes a broad theoretical advantage for the RTX 4070, but it is not a game-performance multiplier.

TFLOPS measure theoretical floating-point throughput under particular conditions. Actual performance also depends on architecture efficiency, rasterization and texture throughput, cache design, memory behavior, drivers, CPU performance, game-engine optimization, resolution, graphics settings, ray tracing, and upscaling.

The PS5’s fixed hardware lets developers optimize specifically for one platform. A console game may use carefully tuned settings and reconstruction techniques that make excellent use of the available hardware. An RTX 4070 PC can be much faster, but its results depend on the quality of the complete system and the PC version of the game.

Which is faster in actual games?

In conventional rasterized rendering, the RTX 4070 should generally deliver higher frame rates and higher graphics settings than the base PS5. It is especially well suited to 1440p high-refresh gaming, where it can provide more headroom for demanding presets and competitive frame rates.

It can also handle 4K in many games, but the result depends on the title, settings, and whether an upscaler is enabled. “4K capable” does not mean native 4K at maximum settings and 120fps in every game.

The PS5 commonly offers a choice between a visual-quality mode and a performance mode. These may target 30fps and 60fps respectively, sometimes with dynamic resolution or reduced ray-tracing effects. A particular PS5 release can therefore feel very smooth and polished even when the RTX 4070 has substantially greater raw rendering capacity.

There is no honest universal FPS percentage for the comparison. Results change with patches, game engines, PC presets, CPU pairing, resolution, and whether the PC uses DLSS. A third-party comparison from WePC broadly places the PS5’s GPU around the RTX 3070 class, but that is contextual rather than an official equivalence or a guarantee for every game.

Ray tracing: a clear RTX 4070 advantage

Both platforms support hardware-accelerated ray tracing, but the RTX 4070 is considerably stronger at using it. Its Ada Lovelace GPU includes third-generation RT cores and a broader NVIDIA ray-tracing software ecosystem.

On PS5, ray tracing often requires compromises such as lower internal resolution, reduced reflections, simplified effects, or a separate performance mode. Developers may use ray tracing selectively rather than enabling expensive effects throughout a game.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

The RTX 4070 is better suited to ray-traced reflections, shadows, and lighting at playable frame rates. It can also run demanding path-traced effects in some PC games, although path tracing is exceptionally expensive and normally requires upscaling and sensible settings even on this card.

“Ray tracing on” is not a standardized quality level. A small ray-traced reflection and fully path-traced global illumination impose very different workloads, so comparisons must identify the actual effect and settings being used.

DLSS gives the RTX 4070 an important practical advantage

The RTX 4070 supports NVIDIA’s DLSS feature set, including Super Resolution, Frame Generation, DLAA, and—where supported—Ray Reconstruction. See NVIDIA’s current RTX 4070 family page for the supported features.

  • DLSS Super Resolution: renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image.
  • Frame Generation: creates additional displayed frames using the GPU’s AI hardware and motion data.
  • NVIDIA Reflex: helps reduce latency in supported games.
  • Ray Reconstruction: can improve the reconstruction of ray-traced effects in compatible titles.

DLSS can let an RTX 4070 target higher output resolutions or smoother displayed motion than native rendering would allow. Its quality varies by game, movement, foliage, particles, and interface elements. Frame Generation also does not have the same input-response characteristics as a genuinely rendered frame: it can improve visual smoothness, but it does not replace the responsiveness of a high base frame rate.

PS5 games also use developer-controlled temporal reconstruction, dynamic resolution, and other image-reconstruction methods. These should not simply be called DLSS. They are different technologies, even if they address a similar problem.

1440p, 4K, 60fps, and 120fps

RTX 4070

The card’s strongest mainstream use case is 1440p at high refresh rates, with high or ultra settings depending on the game. At 4K, it remains capable in many titles when settings are selected carefully and DLSS is used where appropriate. Ray tracing and path tracing can reduce performance substantially.

PS5

The PS5 supports 4K 120Hz displays and VRR, but those are output capabilities, not promises that every game renders natively at 4K or runs at 120fps. Sony’s specifications list support for 4K 120Hz TVs, 8K TVs, and VRR; individual games choose their own resolution and frame-rate modes.

A game sending a 3840×2160 signal may have rendered internally at a lower, dynamic resolution and reconstructed the final image. The same distinction applies to many PC games using DLSS or another upscaler.

Memory and the importance of the CPU

The PS5 has 16GB of unified GDDR6 memory shared by the GPU, CPU, operating system, and game. The RTX 4070 has 12GB of dedicated graphics memory, while a PC has separate system RAM. These capacities are therefore not directly equivalent.

The PS5 also includes an eight-core, 16-thread custom Zen 2 CPU with a variable frequency up to 3.5GHz. The RTX 4070 has no CPU of its own. PC performance depends heavily on the processor it is paired with, particularly at 1080p, high frame rates, and in CPU-heavy games.

A balanced RTX 4070 system should be checked for:

  • A modern, suitably powerful CPU
  • 16GB or preferably 32GB of system RAM, depending on the build and games
  • A fast NVMe SSD with enough capacity
  • A quality power supply and adequate cooling
  • Case airflow and physical GPU clearance
  • A monitor that matches the intended resolution and refresh rate

NVIDIA lists a 650W minimum system-power recommendation for its reference RTX 4070 guidance, although board-partner cards and complete systems can vary. Check the exact card’s dimensions, connector requirements, and PSU recommendation.

Cost: compare a complete PC with a complete console

The most common pricing mistake is comparing a standalone RTX 4070 with a PS5. The graphics card is only one part of a PC. A fair comparison includes the CPU, motherboard, RAM, SSD, case, power supply, cooling, operating system, and potentially a monitor and peripherals.

A PS5 arrives as a complete gaming device with a controller, operating system, storage, and fixed hardware target. That usually makes it the simpler and often cheaper route for someone who only wants console gaming. Current prices vary by country, retailer, bundle, revision, and promotion, so historical launch figures should not be used as a current buying recommendation.

Which should you choose?

Choose an RTX 4070 PC if you want:

  • Higher graphics settings and frame rates
  • 1440p high-refresh gaming
  • Stronger ray tracing
  • DLSS and Frame Generation
  • Mods, ultrawide monitors, and mouse-and-keyboard play
  • PC game stores, streaming, recording, or creative workloads
  • Future component upgrades

Choose a PS5 if you want:

  • A complete plug-and-play gaming system
  • Predictable fixed-platform support
  • PlayStation exclusives and DualSense features
  • Living-room simplicity
  • Physical games, where relevant
  • No driver, launcher, graphics-setting, or component-compatibility troubleshooting

Existing PS5 owner: move to an RTX 4070 PC for PC-exclusive games, mods, higher refresh rates, better ray tracing, or DLSS—not simply because a specification comparison says the GPU is faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Existing PC gamer: an RTX 4070 is firmly above the base PS5’s GPU class for raw rendering, although the size of a real upgrade depends on your current graphics card and the rest of your system.

New buyer on a fixed budget: a PS5 may offer better complete-system value. An RTX 4070 makes more sense when you already have a suitable PC or specifically need the wider capabilities of Windows gaming.

PlayStation-exclusive player: the PS5 remains the right choice regardless of the RTX 4070’s superior graphics hardware.

Final verdict

The answer is yes: the desktop RTX 4070 is more powerful than the base PS5 GPU, both in theoretical shader throughput and in practical features such as ray tracing and DLSS. It is the stronger choice for 1440p high-refresh gaming and gives PC players more control over settings, resolution, and performance.

But “more powerful” is not the same as “better purchase.” The RTX 4070 must be installed in a balanced, complete PC, while the PS5 provides a ready-to-use console with strong platform optimization and access to PlayStation games. Choose the RTX 4070 for superior rendering capability and PC flexibility; choose the PS5 for simplicity, exclusives, and complete-system value.
