The GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 released on January 30, 2025. The launch is complete, so there is no active countdown as of August 18, 2026. For U.S. buyers, retailer schedules pointed to 6:00 a.m. Pacific time / 9:00 a.m. Eastern time, although NVIDIA did not publish one universal worldwide launch clock.

Quick answer

Current countdown 00:00:00 — launch complete

These prices are the cards’ January 2025 U.S. starting MSRPs, not verified August 2026 retail prices. Factory-overclocked, liquid-cooled and premium partner cards could cost more.

When did the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 release?

Both GPUs became available on Thursday, January 30, 2025. NVIDIA had unveiled the GeForce RTX 50 Series at CES on January 6, but that announcement date was separate from the retail launch date. NVIDIA later confirmed that the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 were “out now” on January 30.

NVIDIA’s launch announcement listed starting prices of $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080. The later RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 had separate February release plans and were not part of this launch.

What time did they go on sale?

NVIDIA confirmed the January 30 date but did not establish one universal global launch time in the official material available for this article. The clearest U.S. schedule came from retailers:

  • Pacific: 6:00 a.m. PST
  • Mountain: 7:00 a.m. MST
  • Central: 8:00 a.m. CST
  • Eastern: 9:00 a.m. EST

Newegg announced a 6:00 a.m. PST online purchase schedule, while Micro Center listed 9:00 a.m. EST / 6:00 a.m. PST store openings. That should be treated as a reported U.S. retailer and store schedule—not proof that every country, retailer or NVIDIA product page activated at exactly the same moment.

What “release” meant in practice

A launch time could refer to several different events:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A product page becoming visible.
  • A retailer enabling the add-to-cart button.
  • Physical stores opening.
  • Units actually being available to order.
  • An order being available for immediate shipment rather than backorder.

Those events were not necessarily simultaneous. A countdown reaching zero did not guarantee that a retailer’s listing would activate immediately, and an “available” listing did not always mean inventory would remain through checkout.

Where were the cards sold?

Founders Edition

NVIDIA’s Founders Edition cards were distributed through NVIDIA and selected retailers. In the United States, NVIDIA specifically identified Best Buy as a source for limited Founders Edition models. Founders Edition stock was limited, and availability could differ from that of partner cards.

Partner cards

Board partners offered stock-clocked and factory-overclocked designs, often with different coolers, dimensions, power requirements and prices. NVIDIA named manufacturers including ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY and ZOTAC.

Online, physical and prebuilt channels

  • Online: Newegg and other participating retailers listed RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 models.
  • Physical retail: Micro Center published a launch-day store schedule.
  • Prebuilt PCs: Falcon Northwest, Maingear, Origin PC and other system builders offered desktops configured with the new GPUs.

What happened to launch stock?

Availability was brief for many models. Contemporary reporting found that the cards became extremely difficult to order roughly an hour after launch, with some partner models showing later replenishment dates. That does not mean every model at every retailer sold out at the same instant, but it does explain why a page could show stock at launch and fail during checkout.

Founders Edition cards were particularly difficult to secure because supply was limited. Partner cards appeared at different times and prices, so “RTX 5090 in stock” or “RTX 5080 in stock” was not enough information: buyers needed to check the exact model, seller and delivery estimate.

PCWorld’s contemporary launch report documents the rapid sellouts and replenishment difficulties.

If a listing is sold out

  1. Check several authorized retailers instead of repeatedly refreshing one page.
  2. Compare the exact card model, cooler, size and power requirements.
  3. Separate launch MSRP from a premium AIB price or third-party reseller price.
  4. Verify the seller name, shipping date, return policy and warranty.
  5. Treat “preorder” and “backorder” as different from immediate availability.
  6. Do not assume stock alerts, queues or tracking tools guarantee a purchase.
  7. Consider a prebuilt system only after checking its CPU, cooling, power supply, motherboard, warranty and upgradeability.

A high marketplace premium is not automatically justified by launch demand. The right choice depends on whether the extra performance matters for your games, creative workloads or local AI use.

RTX 5090 or RTX 5080?

The RTX 5090 was aimed at buyers seeking the highest GeForce performance, substantial VRAM and demanding 4K, path-traced, AI or GPU-accelerated creative workloads. It launched with 32GB of GDDR7 memory and a 512-bit memory interface, but it also demanded a larger budget and more attention to power, cooling and case compatibility.

The RTX 5080 offered a lower-cost route to the Blackwell generation for high-end 4K gaming and creative work. It launched with 16GB of GDDR7 memory and up to 960GB/s of memory bandwidth. Buyers should still compare independent performance tests, power draw and game support rather than relying only on headline “up to” claims.

Both cards introduced NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 feature set, including Multi Frame Generation support. That feature support does not remove the need to check whether the games and applications you use support the relevant technologies.

Current status

The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are no longer awaiting release. The historical countdown is:

Any current price, inventory level or Founders Edition availability requires a fresh check with the retailer in your country. The January 2025 MSRPs should not be presented as August 2026 street prices.
