Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes, RTX 5090 scams have appeared on eBay—but not every cheap listing is fraudulent. The documented traps include listings for photographs or empty boxes, wrong or damaged graphics cards, modified hardware, and genuine-looking RTX 5090 boards stripped of their GPU core and memory. The safest rule is simple: if the seller will not prove they possess the exact physical card, keep payment inside eBay, and answer basic model and condition questions clearly, do not buy.
The first prominent photo-listing reports appeared in February 2025. Further reports in 2025 and 2026 described RTX 5090 boards with valuable components removed. These cases document scam patterns, not a coordinated operation involving all eBay sellers.

Why RTX 5090 buyers are being targeted
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 is its flagship GeForce graphics card, making it expensive, scarce, and highly desirable. The Founders Edition launched with a widely reported MSRP of $1,999, but that is a historical launch reference—not a reliable current market price in 2026. Partner models, used cards, open-box units, supply, taxes, and warranty status can all change the value.

Scammers exploit buyers who see a card listed at an attractive “MSRP” price and rush before somebody else purchases it. A price near or below the launch MSRP is not proof of fraud, but a supposedly new card that is implausibly cheap after fees, shipping, and the seller’s acquisition cost deserves extra scrutiny. Compare the exact model and condition with recent completed sales rather than relying on one unusually high or low listing.

The main RTX 5090 eBay scam patterns
1. Photo-only listings
Some deceptive listings use an RTX 5090 title and attractive images, then reveal in the description that the buyer is purchasing a photograph, print, poster, display item, or digital representation. Similar RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 photo listings were reported in February 2025 by Digital Trends and PCWorld.
Read the complete description, item specifics, condition field, shipping details, and checkout screen. Words such as “photo,” “picture only,” “display,” “box,” “manual,” “OEM packaging,” “for collectors,” or “read description” are stop signs unless you intentionally want an accessory. The title and main photograph are not enough.
2. Empty boxes and bait-and-switch shipments
A seller may send an empty RTX 5090 box, a low-value object with similar shipping weight, packaging or accessories instead of the card, or a completely different GPU. Another variation is a lower-tier card flashed with a misleading device name.
A tracking number can show that a package was delivered; it cannot prove that the advertised GPU was inside it.
3. Damaged, untested, or misidentified hardware
A genuine card can still be a bad purchase if it has water damage, prior repairs, mining wear, missing parts, modified firmware, or a false model description. Watch for “as-is,” “untested,” “for parts,” “no GPU,” “no memory,” and similar wording, especially when it is buried in the description or item specifics.

An older or lower-end GPU may also be presented as an RTX 5090 through a modified BIOS or device identifier. Treat that as a failure mode to test for—not as an allegation about any particular seller without evidence.
4. Stripped genuine RTX 5090 boards
This is more sophisticated than a fake box. Reports described RTX 5090 boards that looked authentic but had their GPU core and memory modules removed. The PCB, cooler, serial label, and packaging may all be genuine while the card itself is unusable. Tom’s Hardware reported one such 2025 incident. A separate 2026 report described a seller receiving a stripped card back from a buyer, illustrating why both sides should document an item’s condition.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute5. Off-platform payment and fake-tracking attempts
Never move the transaction to text messages, email invoices, a personal payment page, cryptocurrency, gift cards, bank transfer, cash, checks, or money orders. A seller who says eBay protection applies only after private payment is giving you a reason to leave.
How to inspect an eBay RTX 5090 listing
- Read the title literally. Confirm it says graphics card, GPU, or video card—not box, photo, shell, PCB, heatsink, parts, or repair.
- Read every part of the description. Look for missing components, repairs, modified firmware, “untested” language, and disclaimers that contradict the headline.
- Check condition and item specifics. Verify new, used, open-box, refurbished, or for-parts status; the exact manufacturer and model; VRAM capacity; and whether the listing covers a complete card.
- Demand actual-item photos. Prefer front and rear images, power connector and output views, the serial label with reasonable privacy redaction, and a handwritten note showing the seller’s username and current date. Stock NVIDIA images prove nothing. GPU-Z screenshots are useful evidence but not authentication by themselves.
- Investigate the seller. Check account age, recent feedback, feedback for expensive computer hardware, listing history, shipping origin, reused photographs, and whether the seller suddenly lists several premium GPUs. eBay specifically warns about one-day listings and accounts that abruptly list many high-value items. Feedback is evidence, not proof.
- Compare completed sales. Match the exact model and condition. Do not use a fixed “safe” price threshold; the market varies by model, availability, warranty, and condition.
- Ask precise questions. Request confirmation of the exact model, VRAM, serial information, ownership, repairs, testing, and included accessories. Clear answers increase confidence; pressure, evasiveness, or refusal to show the card should end the purchase.
- Pay only through eligible eBay checkout. Off-platform payment can remove Money Back Guarantee coverage.
Some listings may display eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee indicator, but do not assume every RTX 5090 is covered. Verify that the specific listing displays the program indicator and understand what the program covers.
What to do when the card arrives
Document the unboxing
- Photograph the unopened package and shipping label.
- Record a continuous unboxing video for a high-value purchase.
- Capture the outer box, packing materials, seals, serial labels, and contents.
- Photograph the card before installation.
- Keep the box and all packaging until the transaction is resolved.
This evidence is prudent, not a guarantee that eBay will treat a video as decisive.

Inspect without disassembling
Compare the delivered card with the listing: manufacturer, exact model, cooler, outputs, power connector, serial label, screws, seals, PCB condition, corrosion, burn marks, and accessories. Do not remove the heatsink, break seals, or disassemble the card merely to investigate. That can complicate a return and may affect warranty treatment.

Test safely and promptly
- Use a compatible power supply and the correct cable.
- Inspect the connector for damage or melting before powering on.
- Install current drivers from NVIDIA’s official driver page.
- Confirm that Windows or Linux detects the expected model and memory capacity.
- Use a reputable hardware utility and run a short, controlled graphics or compute test.
- Record temperatures, clocks, power behavior, crashes, artifacts, and error messages.
A card reporting “RTX 5090” in software is not conclusive. Combine software identification with physical inspection, VRAM checks, model information, and test behavior. Do not delay: for eBay.com purchases, the published policy generally allows up to 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date to request a not-as-described return, or the seller’s stated return window if longer. Check the exact deadline shown in your order because policies, categories, and international sites can differ.
What to do if the item is fake, empty, damaged, or wrong
If it never arrives
After the estimated delivery date passes, report the missing item through the order page. An item-not-received report generally must be opened no later than 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date. If tracking shows delivery only to a ZIP code or an address that does not match your order, preserve that evidence and report it through eBay. Do not close the case because the seller promises a future shipment.
If something arrives but it is not the advertised GPU
Open the order and choose the reason that accurately describes the problem: item not as described, wrong item, damaged or faulty, missing parts, or suspected counterfeit. Upload photographs and state observable facts:
- “The package contained a printed photograph, not a graphics card.”
- “The card reports 8GB instead of the 32GB stated in the listing.”
- “The serial label does not match the listing.”
- “The board is missing the GPU package and memory modules.”
A working card of the wrong model is still a material mismatch. Use the correct item-not-as-described route rather than claiming non-delivery.

Keep the resolution on eBay
Do not accept an off-platform return or private refund that removes the transaction record. Follow eBay’s instructions, keep messages and evidence, and do not close the case before the refund is actually received. If eBay denies the claim, save the decision and stated reason, appeal when new evidence is available, and contact your card issuer promptly about its dispute options. Do not initiate overlapping disputes without understanding the consequences.
For suspected fraud in the United States, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Do not destroy or resell suspected counterfeit hardware unless eBay or another authority instructs you to do so.

eBay’s Money Back Guarantee generally covers eligible purchases when an item does not arrive, is faulty or damaged, or materially differs from the listing. A no-returns policy does not necessarily defeat a claim for a counterfeit, defective, or misrepresented item.
Protection is a process, not an automatic shield. Eligibility can depend on:

- Meeting category and transaction requirements.
- Following return instructions and sending back the same item.
- Avoiding exclusions such as third-party freight forwarding or off-platform payment.
eBay may not require a suspected counterfeit to be returned in every situation; follow the specific instructions in your case. A serial number, tracking number, positive feedback score, or software model label is evidence—not conclusive proof of authenticity.

Safer ways to buy
An established retailer generally offers a clearer chain of custody, easier returns, and better warranty documentation, though stock and pricing may be less attractive. Check official destinations such as Best Buy, Newegg, Micro Center, or NVIDIA. On retailer websites, verify whether the seller is the retailer itself or a third-party marketplace vendor.
For warranty questions, consult NVIDIA’s graphics-card warranty information and the board partner’s policy. Warranty eligibility can depend on the serial number, proof of purchase, product, and region; a seller’s promise is not confirmation.
Buying locally lets you inspect and test the card, but payment protection may be weaker. Avoid cash or irreversible payment for an untested GPU. Sometimes waiting for a reputable retailer is financially safer than saving money on a suspicious marketplace listing.

One-minute RTX 5090 buying checklist
- Is the listing clearly for a complete physical graphics card?
- Does it show the exact item rather than stock photos?
- Are the model, VRAM, condition, repairs, and accessories unambiguous?
- Does the seller have relevant, recent hardware feedback?
- Is the price plausible compared with completed sales?
- Will the seller answer specific questions?
- Will you pay entirely through eBay checkout?
- Can you inspect, record, and test the card immediately?
- Is the deadline for a potential claim visible in your order?
If any answer is no—especially if the seller will not show the exact physical card—walk away. A cheap RTX 5090 is not a bargain if it turns out to be a photograph, an empty box, a stripped board, or somebody else’s problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is every cheap RTX 5090 listing on eBay a scam?
No. Prices vary by model, condition, supply, and warranty status. A suspiciously low price is a warning sign, not proof; inspect the complete listing, seller history, actual-item photos, and payment method.
Does 100% positive eBay feedback prove an RTX 5090 is genuine?
No. Feedback may come from inexpensive items, buyers who never tested hardware, or earlier transactions unrelated to the current listing.
Does an eBay no-returns policy prevent a refund for a fake RTX 5090?
Not necessarily. Eligible buyers may still have protection when an item is counterfeit, faulty, damaged, or materially different from the listing, provided they meet eBay’s requirements and deadlines.
Does a serial number prove the card is authentic?
No. Serial numbers can be copied, mismatched, or attached to another product. Use the serial number alongside physical inspection, software checks, testing, and warranty verification.
