Run Uptime Kuma Behind Traefik With Docker Compose

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable pattern is to publish Uptime Kuma on its own hostname, connect its container to the Docker network used by Traefik, and route HTTPS traffic to port 3001. Keep Uptime Kuma’s /app/data directory on a local, POSIX-lock-capable filesystem, and preserve WebSocket upgrades. A subdirectory URL such as https://example.com/uptimekuma is not supported.

What the finished deployment looks like

Uptime Kuma listens inside its container on TCP port 3001. Traefik receives requests on its HTTPS entrypoint, matches a hostname rule, terminates TLS, and forwards the request to that container port. Uptime Kuma stores its SQLite-backed application data under /app/data, which should be persisted with a bind mount or volume.

The public URL should be a dedicated host, for example status.example.com. Create DNS for that name, point it at the server running Traefik, and use the same name in the Traefik Host(...) rule. Uptime Kuma’s reverse-proxy guidance explicitly says subdirectory deployments are unsupported, so a path prefix is not an alternative.

Prerequisites and design decisions

  • Docker Engine with the Compose plugin, so docker compose is available.
  • An existing Traefik deployment with an HTTPS entrypoint and a certificate resolver. The names in your labels must exactly match Traefik’s static configuration.
  • A DNS record for the hostname you will put in the Host(...) rule.
  • A Docker network that both Traefik and Uptime Kuma can reach. The network name is deployment-specific; use the actual shared network rather than assuming a particular name.
  • A persistent data location that supports local/POSIX file locking. The installation guidance warns that unsupported filesystems such as NFS can lead to SQLite corruption.

Decide whether Uptime Kuma also needs to be reachable directly on the host. If Traefik is the only public entry point, you can omit the host-port mapping and expose the service only to the shared Docker network. If you need direct access for initial setup or emergency diagnostics, retain the mapping, but protect that port with your firewall.

Minimal Compose service

This is the project’s basic Compose shape. It publishes port 3001 on the Docker host and persists data in a directory beside the Compose file.

The restart: unless-stopped policy brings the container back after a Docker or host restart unless you explicitly stop it. The image tag shown above follows the current official example’s major-version tag. Pin a different tag only if that matches your own upgrade policy.

Compose variant for Traefik-only access

When Traefik already provides the public entrypoint, attach Uptime Kuma to Traefik’s network and omit ports. In this example, traefik-public is a placeholder: replace it with the real network name used by your Traefik container.

      - "traefik.http.services.uptime-kuma.loadBalancer.server.port=3001"

networks:
  traefik-public:
    external: true

Use an external network declaration only when that network already exists outside this Compose project. If your setup creates the shared network in the same project, use the network definition required by that deployment instead. The important condition is reachability between the Traefik and Uptime Kuma containers.

What each Traefik label does

Label Purpose Value to change
traefik.enable=true Opts this container into Traefik’s Docker provider. Normally unchanged.
traefik.http.routers.uptime-kuma.rule=Host(...) Matches requests for one hostname. Replace status.example.com with your DNS name.
traefik.http.routers.uptime-kuma.entrypoints=https Binds the router to Traefik’s HTTPS entrypoint. Use your configured entrypoint name if it is not https.
traefik.http.routers.uptime-kuma.tls=true Enables TLS on this router. Normally unchanged for HTTPS.
traefik.http.routers.uptime-kuma.tls.certresolver=myresolver Selects the certificate resolver that obtains the certificate. Replace myresolver with the resolver name in Traefik’s static configuration.
traefik.http.services.uptime-kuma.loadBalancer.server.port=3001 Forces Traefik to send traffic to Uptime Kuma’s internal port. Keep 3001; this is Uptime Kuma’s service port.

The explicit service-port label matters because it overrides automatic port detection. It also avoids ambiguity when the container has more than one exposed port or when no host-port mapping exists.

Bring the stack online

  1. Prepare storage. Create ./data next to the Compose file, or select a Docker volume backed by a filesystem that supports POSIX locking. Do not place the SQLite data directory on an unsupported NFS mount.
  2. Choose the network. Determine the network attached to Traefik with your normal Docker inspection workflow, then put that exact name in the Uptime Kuma service’s networks section.
  3. Set the hostname and resolver. Edit the Host(...) value and certificate-resolver label. The hostname must have DNS pointing to the Traefik host, and the resolver name must match Traefik’s configured resolver exactly.
  4. Start or recreate the service. Run docker compose up -d. If you changed labels or networks, Compose will recreate the container as needed.
  5. Watch startup output. Use docker compose logs -f uptime-kuma for application logs and the equivalent Traefik log command for router, network, or certificate errors.
  6. Open the HTTPS hostname. Visit the complete host over HTTPS, not a path such as /uptimekuma. Complete Uptime Kuma’s first-run setup in the browser.

WebSockets: the part that ordinary HTTP checks miss

Uptime Kuma is WebSocket-based. Its official reverse-proxy guidance states that a proxy must handle the Upgrade and Connection headers so the WebSocket handshake can complete. Traefik’s HTTP routing must therefore be functioning as a WebSocket-capable reverse proxy, not merely returning the initial HTML page.

A deployment can appear healthy while still being broken: the login page may load, but live monitor updates, connection status, or other real-time behavior can fail. After opening the site, keep the browser developer console and network panel available and check the proxy logs if the WebSocket connection closes or never upgrades. First verify that Traefik reaches the container on the shared network; then inspect any proxy middleware or entrypoint configuration that could remove upgrade handling.

Forwarded headers and the Trust Proxy setting

When Uptime Kuma is completely behind Traefik and firewall rules prevent users from bypassing the proxy, you can enable Settings → Reverse Proxy → HTTP Headers → Trust Proxy. This allows Uptime Kuma to trust forwarded headers from the proxy so the client IP is represented correctly in logs.

Only enable that setting when direct access is restricted to the trusted proxy path. If users can reach the application through an untrusted route, accepting forwarded headers from arbitrary clients can make logged client information unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HTTPS and certificate issuance

The TLS labels tell Traefik to terminate HTTPS for the hostname and use the selected certificate resolver. Certificate acquisition still depends on the resolver’s own static configuration and on the hostname resolving to the server where Traefik can answer the challenge. A label cannot repair a misspelled entrypoint, resolver, or DNS record.

Check Expected condition If it fails
DNS The status hostname resolves to the Traefik server. Correct the DNS record before debugging Uptime Kuma.
Entrypoint The label uses the exact HTTPS entrypoint name configured in Traefik. Change the label or Traefik configuration so the names match.
Resolver The certificate-resolver label names an existing resolver. Use the configured resolver name and inspect Traefik’s certificate logs.
Backend Traefik can connect to the Uptime Kuma container on port 3001. Fix the shared Docker network or service-port label.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The browser returns a gateway or “server unavailable” error

  • Confirm the container is running with docker compose ps.
  • Check that Traefik and Uptime Kuma share a reachable Docker network.
  • Verify the service label points to port 3001, not the host port or an unrelated container port.
  • Inspect Traefik logs for a router that was not created because a label, entrypoint, or network reference is invalid.

The page loads but real-time updates do not work

  • Treat this as a WebSocket problem first: confirm the request reaches the HTTPS router and that the upgrade flow is preserved.
  • Check browser developer tools for a failed WebSocket handshake or immediate disconnect.
  • Review Traefik logs and verify the backend remains reachable on port 3001.

Traefik serves the wrong certificate or no certificate

  • Compare the requested hostname with the Host(...) rule character for character.
  • Confirm DNS points to the Traefik host and that the HTTPS entrypoint is the one receiving traffic.
  • Check that the resolver name in the label exactly matches the static resolver configuration.

Uptime Kuma starts, then data behaves unreliably

  • Check where ./data is mounted. It must be persistent and support POSIX-style file locking.
  • Move the data directory off an unsupported filesystem such as NFS before relying on the instance for monitoring history and settings.
  • Do not delete the data directory as a first troubleshooting step; that removes the persisted application state.

The hostname works only when a host port is published

Publishing 3001:3001 is not required for Traefik-to-container traffic when both services share a Docker network. If removing the mapping breaks the route, the likely issue is network reachability or an incorrect service-port label, not the absence of a host mapping. Recheck the network attachment and keep the explicit backend port set to 3001.

Deployment choices at a glance

Choice Hostname routing HTTPS automation WebSockets Network exposure Persistence concern
Compose with host port and Traefik Dedicated host recommended Traefik resolver handles the certificate when configured Must pass upgrade and connection handling Port 3001 is also exposed on the host Use a lock-capable persistent /app/data
Compose on shared Traefik network without host port Dedicated host required Traefik resolver handles the certificate when configured Must pass upgrade and connection handling Only Traefik needs public access; backend stays on Docker network Use a lock-capable persistent /app/data
Subdirectory URL Not supported by Uptime Kuma Not applicable as a supported layout Not a supported deployment pattern Not applicable Not applicable

Pre-launch checklist

  • The DNS record resolves to the Traefik host.
  • The Host(...) rule uses that exact hostname.
  • The HTTPS entrypoint and certificate-resolver names match Traefik’s static configuration.
  • The Uptime Kuma container is attached to the same reachable Docker network as Traefik.
  • The backend label selects port 3001.
  • ./data (or the chosen volume) is persistent and stored on a local/POSIX-lock-capable filesystem.
  • The site opens over HTTPS and the browser establishes a WebSocket connection for live behavior.
  • If the application is fully shielded from direct access, Trust Proxy is enabled at Settings → Reverse Proxy → HTTP Headers → Trust Proxy when accurate client IP logging is required.

With those conditions met, Traefik can terminate HTTPS on the dedicated hostname and forward both ordinary HTTP requests and Uptime Kuma’s WebSocket traffic to the container on port 3001, while the persisted data directory protects the instance across recreations.
