If RuneScape or Old School RuneScape (OSRS) closes unexpectedly on a Windows PC, work through these eight checks in order: confirm the game and system requirements, restart Windows, update the graphics driver, reduce competing load, clear the correct cache, reinstall if needed, scan for malware, and test a fresh Windows user profile. They are practical troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes; Jagex does not publish success rates for them. First distinguish a client crash from lag, a failed login, or a disconnection, since those symptoms need different troubleshooting.
First, identify what is actually failing
A crash means the game client closes or produces an error such as Error_game_crash. If the client stays open but the world freezes, actions lag, or you are disconnected, start with Jagex’s connection troubleshooting guidance instead. It covers network-related checks such as VPNs, routers, DNS, and firewalls; those are not general remedies for a process that keeps closing.
Also note whether you are playing RuneScape or OSRS and which Windows client you use: Jagex Launcher, Steam, standalone, or RuneLite where applicable. That distinction matters especially when clearing cache.
1. Check the requirements for your game and client
Compare your PC with Jagex’s current recommended specifications. The 2026-retrieved table lists Windows 10 or later (64-bit) and 8 GB RAM for both Windows desktop clients, but graphics and storage requirements differ by game and client. For example, it lists at least 8 GB of cache storage for the RuneScape Windows client and at least 200 MB of available storage for the official OSRS Windows client. These are separate entries, not interchangeable requirements; check the current table for your exact setup because specifications can change.

2. Restart the computer
Save your work, close the game, and restart Windows. Jagex includes a restart in its crash guidance because it may help with memory-related problems. If the crash returns, continue with the next checks rather than treating one successful launch as proof the issue is resolved.
3. Update the graphics driver
Jagex notes that out-of-date graphics drivers can cause performance issues. Identify your graphics hardware in Windows, then get the appropriate driver from its manufacturer. Avoid guessing which driver your PC needs or relying on an unrelated driver-updater utility.

4. Reduce competing load and check laptop airflow
- Close programs you do not need while playing.
- Keep Windows and other installed software current.
- If you use a laptop, make sure its vents are not blocked and air can circulate around it.
These are general performance measures recommended by Jagex, not a guaranteed cure for a crash.
5. Clear the cache for the game and client you use
Corrupted cache files can cause problems; clearing the cache makes the client download fresh files. Use Jagex’s cache instructions for your exact game and installation. RuneScape and OSRS use different locations, and OSRS paths vary across standalone, Jagex Launcher, Steam, and RuneLite. Do not delete a folder based on instructions for a different client. After clearing it, let the cache reach 100% before playing.

6. Reinstall the client if simpler checks fail
If the crash persists and you suspect a damaged or hard-to-identify game file, reinstalling is a later option in Jagex’s crash guidance. Remove and reinstall the relevant client using its supported installation method, then allow required files to download. This takes longer than the earlier checks and is not evidence that every recurring crash is caused by installation files.
7. Run a malware scan
Use a reputable security tool already available to you to scan Windows. Jagex includes a virus scan in its crash troubleshooting and notes that infection can cause significant performance problems. Its guidance does not endorse a particular paid scanner.

8. Test with a new Windows user profile
Create or use another Windows account and launch the same game client there. If it behaves differently, that comparison can help isolate settings or programs associated with the original Windows profile. It does not repair or change your RuneScape game account.

OSRS crashes during certain in-game activities
For OSRS crashes associated with activities such as killing or looting an NPC, Mining, Woodcutting, or Fishing, Jagex says affected players can enter ::repairlt in chat. This LootTracker repair is specifically for OSRS, not a general RuneScape fix. It may take up to a minute and can slow the game while it runs.

Loading problems or error c0000409
Jagex suggests trying Compatibility Mode for loading issues or error c0000409, but says it is not generally necessary and warns that performance may worsen for some players. If that happens, turn Compatibility Mode off. Do not use it as a default step for every crash.
Error_game_crash
For the named Error_game_crash message, Jagex says corrupted files in the Jagex Cache are a likely cause and recommends clearing the cache using the game- and client-specific instructions above.
If the game still crashes
Contact Jagex Support through its game-crashes guidance and describe when the client closes, the exact error if one appears, your game and client, and which steps you have already tried. Jagex does not publish comparative success rates for these steps, so there is no evidence-based way to promise one fix will work for every PC.
