The RuneScape “payment tiers” that drew backlash in January 2025 were feature combinations in a randomized membership survey—not a new tier system Jagex announced or launched. Reported examples included ads and limits such as mobile-only access at some levels, while higher-priced combinations included enhanced support and account security. Jagex later apologized for how the survey was handled.
What the RuneScape membership survey showed
Jagex sent the survey at random by email in partnership with research firm SKIM, according to the January 14 notice reproduced by RuneNation. It used randomized feature combinations to explore how players valued different membership features. Jagex’s notice stressed: “It’s important to note that this is not a single proposal or finalised plan.”

Players shared screenshots of possible packages, which Insider Gaming reported on January 16, 2025. The reported options included ads, mobile-only access, shorter AFK timers, improved data access, pre-verified account recovery, name reservations, the ability to pause membership, enhanced player support, and advanced account security. The screenshots described examples of possible combinations, not a confirmed menu of services.
How the reported tier examples differed
The reported examples varied along several axes: monthly cost, whether ads appeared, access restrictions, AFK timer, support and recovery options, security features, and the number of member characters. The figures below are examples reported from survey screenshots, not official prices, a complete list of options, or evidence of what Jagex planned to implement.

The reported price range should not be read as a finding about what players would pay: the available reporting gives example amounts, not a population statistic or a published willingness-to-pay result.
Why ads, support, and security prompted criticism
The most contentious idea was not simply paying more for extra features. Reported combinations raised the prospect of ads or access restrictions at some levels, while presenting player support, account recovery, and stronger security as features associated with other options. That framing led players to question whether core protections and help should be treated as paid upgrades.

The screenshots and secondary reporting establish that these ideas appeared in survey examples; they do not establish that Jagex adopted them, decided to charge for them, or committed to changing existing membership. The survey’s randomized format also means a screenshot of one combination should not be mistaken for a final, coherent package.
Jagex’s response to the backlash
In a January 17 update reproduced by RuneNation, Jagex CEO Mod Pips apologized for the survey’s execution: “The Conjoint Membership Survey has caused the community frustration, anger, and concern – we made major mistakes with this and are truly sorry.” The statement said Jagex had failed to consider the survey from players’ perspective, had been caught up in research mode while rushing a project with a research partner, and acknowledged that some ideas “just shouldn’t have been in there.”

This was an apology for how the survey was handled, not an announcement of a replacement tier menu. The reproduced statement and notice are available through RuneNation; the underlying Jagex pages were not directly accessible in the cited reporting.

Jagex’s subscription terms say a subscription purchased for a character can be used by that character across RuneScape and Old School. They also state that packages can change, subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled, and Jagex may change fees with notice; a fee change takes effect on renewal.

Those terms provide membership context, but they do not turn the survey screenshots into current offers. As one platform-specific example, the US Apple App Store listing displays digital RuneScape membership options, including a $14.99 monthly membership, and a single Bond for $8.99. Those are US iOS listing prices; they may differ by package, region, platform, taxes, or purchase channel. Check the store or purchase channel you intend to use for its current listing.
