RuneScape Reignited: What Jagex Announced—and What It’s Reviewing

Jagex pitched Reignited as a fresh start inside RuneScape, then began reassessing its character restrictions and membership plan after player concerns.

RuneScape Reignited is a planned fresh-start character type inside the existing RuneScape game, not a separate MMO. Jagex initially announced a December 2, 2026 launch, a new economy and hiscores, and ten days of access to members’ content. But on October 6, Jagex said it was preparing substantial revisions and would seek player feedback, so the original rules—including the membership plan—were not settled.

What is RuneScape Reignited?

Reignited is a new character type intended to give new and returning players a shared starting point. Jagex’s October 3 announcement connected it to the Adventure Guide and a remastered early-game journey, presenting it as a fresh on-ramp after changes including the removal of Treasure Hunter. The company’s stated aim was to offer a new economy and hiscores without paid progression advantages. Those are Jagex’s reasons for the plan, not evidence that it will attract a particular number of players or succeed.

Creative director Ryan Philpott described it to GamesRadar as “an opportunity to relaunch RuneScape.” He said the studio had strong confidence that this was the right time to show people the game again after removing what he called “egregious features.” That confidence is his assessment, not a guarantee of the mode’s outcome. GamesRadar’s October 5 interview contains the full remarks.

How Reignited was supposed to differ from Veteran characters

Jagex’s initial plan drew a line between Reignited and Veteran characters in progression and key parts of the game economy. They could still encounter one another and join clans and homesteads, but the original FAQ said Reignited characters would use Reignited-only worlds and would not share trading, Grand Exchange access, or boss instances with Veteran characters. The comparison below reflects the plan announced October 3, not a final design after the review began.

Membership The original announcement offered ten days of members’ content, and the plan was criticized for requiring separate membership. Jagex later said it was considering membership options. Existing membership arrangements; the October 6 statement did not set out a revised comparison.
Recognition of past progress Not applicable to a fresh-start character in the original framing. Jagex acknowledged concerns that Veteran progress would not be recognized and said it was exploring ways to address this.

The original mechanics are described in the October 3 announcement and FAQ; PC Gamer also explained the character-type distinction in its October 4 coverage.

Why existing players pushed back

Jagex’s October 6 statement acknowledged that some existing players felt they were no longer the focus. It listed worries about Veteran worlds losing population, further dividing a playerbase players already see as small, and leaving Veteran achievements unrecognized. Players also objected to restrictions between the character types and the separate-membership requirement in the original plan.

These concerns point to a real design trade-off: separating economies and access can protect the fresh-start experience, but it can also limit how freely established and new characters play together. The announcement allowed some social overlap, yet kept several consequential activities apart. The initial plan therefore promised connection without a fully shared game environment.

What happens next—and what players should treat as provisional

On October 6, Jagex said it was preparing proposals for substantial changes, including ways to recognize Veteran progress, avoid a hard community split, and reconsider membership options. It said it would seek player feedback by the end of that week. At that point, no revised design or final decision had been announced.

The December 2, 2026 launch date and ten-day members-content offer were part of the October 3 announcement. Since Jagex subsequently put the plan under review, readers should treat the announced date, access terms, and character restrictions as the original proposal rather than assume all remain final. Follow Jagex’s October 6 community statement and the official announcement and FAQ for the company’s published updates.
