Capacity: Ryan Field has a published football figure; Wrigley’s is not established here
Northwestern Wildcats Athletics reported a capacity of 35,000 for the new Ryan Field in its September 29, 2026 coverage of the stadium’s opening. Northwestern said the team would open the venue against Penn State on October 2, 2026. The 35,000 figure is the reported capacity for the new stadium, not a head-to-head attendance comparison.
Northwestern’s announcement of the 2023 Wildcats Classic confirms that the Iowa game was played at Wrigley Field, but it does not give a football-specific seating capacity. Baseball seating and football seating can involve different configurations, so Wrigley’s baseball capacity should not be substituted for a football figure.

Northwestern lists Ryan Field Campus at 1501 Central St., Evanston, IL 60208, and identifies Ryan Field as the football venue. The university’s 2026 coverage describes the Wildcats’ return to Central Street after playing elsewhere during construction.

Wrigley Field in Chicago
Northwestern and the Chicago Cubs announced the 2023 Wildcats Classic against Iowa at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Northwestern has also referenced earlier Wildcats Classic games there, including a 2021 event and the 2010 game against Illinois. These selected events do not mean Wrigley replaced Ryan Field as Northwestern’s regular home venue.
The practical distinction is campus setting in Evanston versus a Chicago ballpark setting. The cited materials do not provide a directly comparable door-to-door travel time, parking cost, or transit assessment; check the venue and event guidance for the particular game you plan to attend.

Northwestern’s gameday information describes “Walk With Us,” when fans can line Walker Way with the Northwestern Wildcat Marching Band to greet the team roughly two and a half hours before kickoff. It also describes the “Growl”: fans raise an arm in a Wildcat claw and make noise while the defense is on the field, especially on third down.
Features Northwestern describes at the new stadium
In its project materials, Northwestern describes close sightlines for all 35,000 seats, a canopy intended to provide weather protection, open main concourses, plazas for pregame activity, and four premium clubs. These are the university’s descriptions of the project, not independent measurements of comfort or proof that every fan will experience the venue the same way.

What can be said about Wrigley
The Northwestern announcement supports describing Wrigley as a historic Chicago ballpark that has hosted selected Northwestern football games. It does not establish a full football seating configuration, a complete tailgating plan, or game-day operations comparable with those documented for Ryan Field. There is also no comparable fan survey or independently published statistical study in the cited materials to show that either site is louder, more convenient, or more enjoyable.

Start with the game listing, rather than assuming the team uses both sites interchangeably. Ryan Field is Northwestern’s current home venue; Wrigley Field has been used for specifically announced Wildcats Classic games. For a particular date, verify the listed venue and its current travel and ticket information, since a historical Wrigley event does not establish the location of a future game.
