If Windows reports that rzstorageio.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Razer program that originally installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
You may also see messages such as:
- “Error loading rzstorageio.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because rzstorageio.dll was not found.”
- “The application failed to start because rzstorageio.dll was not found.”
- “rzstorageio.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. It can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL cannot be loaded.

What rzstorageio.dll belongs to
Public file inventories describe rzstorageio.dll as a “Storage IO module” associated most strongly with legacy Razer Synapse installations. A commonly reported application location is:
C:Program Files (x86)RazerSynapseRzStorageIO.dll
Older Razer Game Booster installations have also been associated with the filename. These historical associations do not establish that every version of Synapse or every Razer product contains the file. The exact owner on your computer is determined by the executable named in the error and the file path where Windows expected to find the DLL.
There is no public evidence that rzstorageio.dll is part of Windows itself. Do not copy it into:

A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Razer software. Therefore, the Windows architecture does not tell you that this DLL should come from a 64-bit source.
Fix 1: Repair Razer Synapse
If the error appears when Synapse starts, use its built-in Windows repair entry before attempting a full removal.

- Search for Apps & features.
- Open the result.
- Find Razer Synapse 3 in the installed-app list.
- Select it and choose Modify.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Select REPAIR.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, open Synapse again. If it starts without the DLL message, the repair restored or reconnected the application files.
If Razer Synapse 3 is not listed, or the repair option fails, do not place a downloaded DLL in the Razer folder. Continue with the clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Clean-reinstall the Razer application
A clean reinstall is the correct repair when the installation is incomplete, corrupted, or partially removed.
Before uninstalling, export Synapse profiles where possible and preserve any logs that Razer support may need.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Close Synapse and other Razer applications from the notification area.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Remove Razer Synapse and related Razer components shown in the list.
- Restart Windows.
- Use Razer’s official clean-reinstallation instructions to remove remaining Razer software components.
- Restart again if the instructions request it.
- Download the currently supported Razer software only from Razer’s official website.
- Install it using an administrator account.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Reconnect the Razer device and test the application.
The definitive fix is reinstalling the program that owns the file. Installing a replacement DLL separately does not recreate the application’s registry entries, dependencies, services, permissions, or supporting files.
Synapse 3 and Synapse 4
Razer has retired Synapse 3 support and identifies Synapse 4 as its replacement. That does not prove that Synapse 4 contains every legacy Synapse 3 DLL. If an old startup entry still requests rzstorageio.dll, first identify whether it belongs to Synapse, Game Booster, or another historical Razer installation.
If the original application is obsolete or no longer offered by Razer, remove the abandoned startup entry or uninstall the application rather than sourcing the DLL from an unofficial catalog. If you still need the Razer device, install the current Razer software supported for that device.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
rzstorageio.dllor a Razer application. - Expand the event and review the original file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when you can confirm that it came from the expected Razer installation directory and is associated with the correct application. Microsoft cautions that allowing a detected threat can expose the device.
When the file’s origin is unclear, choose the safer route: remove the quarantine decision if appropriate, then reinstall the Razer application from its official installer. Do not restore a file merely because its filename matches the error.
Fix 4: Repair a missing dependency
Read the entire error dialog carefully. If it names a second missing file, that second file may be the actual dependency problem.
Common runtime names include:
MSVCP*.dllMSVCR*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll
Do not assume that rzstorageio.dll itself is a Microsoft runtime file. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the error identifies those runtime files or the Razer installer specifically requires them.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
To repair the runtime:
- Open Microsoft’s official Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the package architecture required by the application.
- Use
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit Razer application. - Use
vc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit application. - Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Razer application again.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs the x86 package. Multiple Visual C++ versions can coexist, and installing the newest package does not necessarily repair an unrelated legacy dependency.
Fix 5: Update Razer software and relevant drivers
An update can replace damaged application files or resolve an incompatibility introduced by a device or Windows change.
First update the Razer application from Razer’s official software page. Then check the device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Keyboards, Mice and other pointing devices, or Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click the Razer device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Synapse again.
Do not treat rzstorageio.dll as a driver. Device Manager cannot restore a missing application DLL, and updating a driver is not a substitute for repairing Synapse.

If manually hunting through hardware entries and driver versions is becoming difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Razer application remains the definitive fix when that application owns rzstorageio.dll.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Razer DLL, so use them after checking the Razer installation and dependencies.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful SFC scan does not prove that rzstorageio.dll has been restored. If the file is still absent from the Razer application directory, repair or reinstall the Razer software.
Repeating SFC without identifying what changed usually does not solve an application-specific DLL failure. If you want assistance identifying damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly interpreting command output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it found; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the Razer application that owns this file.
Fix 7: Install Windows updates
Windows updates can repair operating-system compatibility issues, although they will not normally supply a missing Razer application DLL.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Choose Download & install when updates are offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Razer application.
If the problem began after a recent update, note the update date and test the Razer repair procedure before removing anything from Windows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run this command merely because the file ends in .dll:
regsvr32 rzstorageio.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. An application-runtime DLL is not automatically a registerable component. Registration will not recreate a missing Razer installation or repair a missing dependency.

When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the problem started after a specific installation, driver change, or software change and Windows has a suitable restore point.
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs but does not remove personal files. Afterward, reinstall or update the Razer software if necessary.
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the Razer application. A copied DLL can also create version conflicts or DLL hijacking risk because Windows searches application directories according to defined DLL search rules.

FAQ
Is rzstorageio.dll a Windows file?
No public evidence places it among Windows protected system components. It is associated with Razer application directories.
Which Razer program uses it?
Legacy Razer Synapse is the strongest historical association. Older Razer Game Booster installations have also been documented. Confirm the owner from the executable path on the affected computer.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Copying it there is unsafe and does not repair the owning Razer application.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file or the Razer installer requires it. Visual C++ is not a direct replacement for rzstorageio.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Can regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. It applies to DLLs designed for registration, not ordinary application-runtime files.
Is Synapse 4 guaranteed to include this DLL?
No. Synapse 3 is retired and Synapse 4 is the current replacement, but the legacy file may not belong to every current release. Identify the requesting application first.
What is the safest fix?
Repair or clean-reinstall the Razer application that originally installed rzstorageio.dll, using the official installer.
