They are a practical shortlist, not a tested or objective ranking. The locations below come primarily from PC Gamer’s guide, which describes an older game build; Update 2.0 later added weapons, so check each pickup in your current version before relying on it.
Which early unique weapon should you look for?
Choose by role and acquisition cost, not by an assumed damage ranking. The published location guide does not provide controlled comparisons or damage figures. Valik Lummox’s AKM-74S is an early scoped option; Shah’s Mate and Spitter are SMGs suited to a different role; the AR416 and Combatant involve encounters or decisions that may not suit every player.

| Valik Lummox’s AKM-74S | Scoped rifle | Water tower north of Zalissya, Lesser Zone | Windows Central says its scope cannot be detached, which can be awkward up close. |
| Unknown Stalker’s AR416 | Rifle | The Poppy Field side mission, Lesser Zone | Getting the gun is tied to an encounter over the religious icon; the guide also describes killing the stalker as an alternative. |
| Shah’s Mate | Customized Viper-5 SMG | Unmarked tunnel in far northern Garbage | Its guide-described advantage is qualitative: an extended drum magazine and somewhat more consistency than the standard Viper-5. |
| Spitter | Customized S-2 SMG | Loot Leva Borzoi during A Big Score in Garbage | The route described is hostile: Borzoi attempts to rob you, and obtaining the gun means killing him. |
| Combatant | AKM-74S | Give Colonel Korshunov the Unusual PDA during Back to the Slag Heap in Garbage | The PC Gamer guide says this choice affects the ending; the weapon benefit is described as slightly better accuracy and range than a regular AKM-74S. |
1. Valik Lummox’s AKM-74S: an early scoped rifle
Look for the climbable water tower north of Zalissya in the Lesser Zone. The rifle is on top. PC Gamer links the pickup to Warlock’s Debtor, while Windows Central cautions that taking Warlock’s quest may be required for the weapon to spawn. If it is missing, the quest connection is worth checking rather than assuming the tower is empty in every circumstance.
The installed scope and extended magazine make this a useful marksman option. Windows Central reports that the scope cannot be detached, so the rifle is less convenient in tight spaces. Carrying a shotgun or SMG alongside it gives you a close-range alternative.
#1 Best Overall
- The first console reported version of the survival horror FPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series that has sold over 15 million units worldwide
- Chornobili, its tragedy doesn't end
- Genre: Open World FPS
2. Unknown Stalker’s AR416: a choice during The Poppy Field
During The Poppy Field side mission in the Lesser Zone, you can encounter a stalker carrying the AR416. The guide describes handing over the religious icon as one way to obtain the rifle; it also lists killing the stalker and looting the weapon as an alternative. Consider what you want from the encounter before choosing a route.
PC Gamer calls the AR416 a “high-end rifle,” but publishes no numeric comparison or test establishing how much better it is than other rifles. Treat it as a potentially useful rifle pickup, not a proven best-in-slot choice.
3. Shah’s Mate: a customized Viper-5 in Garbage
In far northern Garbage, search for an unmarked tunnel. The stash is beneath a crack in the wall about halfway down. Shah’s Mate is a Viper-5 SMG with an extended drum magazine. PC Gamer describes it as somewhat more consistent than the standard Viper-5, without giving figures for that difference.
The weapon can also be encountered during the Garbage main questline, according to the guide. If you miss the tunnel stash, keep an eye out as you progress through that area.
4. Spitter: a hostile pickup during A Big Score
During A Big Score in Garbage, Leva Borzoi attempts to rob you. PC Gamer says killing and looting him yields Spitter, an S-2 SMG fitted with a muzzle attachment and stock, plus an improved grip. The guide characterizes it as fast-firing but does not publish a measured rate or comparative damage.
This is not a peaceful acquisition route: you have to kill Borzoi to take the weapon as described. If you do not want that confrontation, skip this pickup rather than treating it as a free reward.
Rank #2
5. Combatant: an AKM-74S with a story consequence
During Back to the Slag Heap in Garbage, giving Colonel Korshunov the Unusual PDA yields Combatant. PC Gamer describes the rifle as having slightly better accuracy and range than a regular AKM-74S, but the guide also says the decision affects the ending.
Weigh that narrative consequence against the weapon benefit before handing over the PDA. This is an optional reward, not a cost-free upgrade.
Are the locations still accurate in Update 2.0?
GSC Game World’s official Update 2.0 announcement says the update adds new weapons and that a unique variant can be found somewhere in the Zone. That establishes that the weapon pool has changed, but the announcement does not confirm whether each older pickup location or balance description remains unchanged.
PC Gamer’s detailed location guide includes a February 2025 patch check, saying the locations and quests it covered had not changed in the patches released by then. That predates Update 2.0, so it is not confirmation for the current build. Verify a specific pickup in your version if a spawn or quest trigger does not match the guide.
Other early pickups worth knowing about
- Drowned: This Garbage-area AKM-74S is linked to a man near the Slag Heap entrance who dropped it in the river. PC Gamer says it is not much different from the regular rifle and may be missed if you advance the Garbage story, although it may still be retrievable from the water.
- Special: The guide places this AKM-74U at a mill in Cordon, northeast of Rookie Village. It has a muzzle, stock, and reflex sight, and obtaining it involves the stalker Stets Leech. Confirm the route and availability in your current build.
- The Veteran: GSC’s official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 site calls The Veteran a unique weapon and describes it as an early-game advantage. The official material cited here does not establish a location, so this shortlist does not assign it one.
PC Gamer’s location descriptions are in its unique-weapons guide. For an additional account of Valik’s rifle and its fixed-scope drawback, see Windows Central’s early-game gear guide.
