S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: The Hardest Mutants to Kill

There is no official, patch-current ranking of the hardest mutants in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. In practical terms, the Chimera and Pseudogiant are the toughest heavy encounters, while Bloodsuckers, Controllers, and Burers challenge players in different ways. The order can shift with difficulty and game version: GSC has changed mutant damage, protection, health, regeneration, and combat behavior in updates.

Which mutants are hardest to kill?

This is a matchup guide, not a developer-issued tier list. The available official patch notes document balance changes, but do not provide a complete current table of mutant health or armor. That makes exact rankings and universal shot counts unreliable.

Mutant Why the encounter is demanding Weapon guidance Patch context
Chimera A heavy, high-threat encounter; its combat behavior was specifically adjusted in Update 1.6. A third-party guide recommends 7.62x54R or .308 ammunition and lists the RPG-7u as an option. These are suggestions, not tested shot-count guarantees. Update 1.6 reported improved Chimera combat behavior. Read the archived Update 1.6 notes.
Pseudogiant A heavy durability challenge. Update 1.6 reduced its HP, so older accounts of the fight may not reflect that adjustment. A third-party guide suggests .308 ammunition in volume or a GP-25 grenade launcher; neither is a guaranteed formula. Update 1.6 reduced Pseudogiant HP and fixed a stomp issue. Read the archived Update 1.6 notes.
Bloodsucker A difficult fight whose threat depends on its attacks, the selected difficulty, and the game’s balance version. A third-party guide suggests .308 or 12/70 slug ammunition, as well as grenade options. Treat these as general guidance rather than a measured result. Patch 1.0.1 adjusted Bloodsucker damage, protection against guns, and out-of-combat HP regeneration. Read the archived Patch 1.0.1 notes.
Controller A dangerous matchup; the cited official notes establish a health adjustment, not a current numerical ranking against other mutants. Not stated in the cited guide as a specific weapon recommendation. Patch 1.0.1 moderately reduced Controller HP. Read the archived Patch 1.0.1 notes.
Burer A dangerous encounter with a documented instant-kill issue on Stalker difficulty in the publisher’s listed fixes. Not stated in the cited guide as a specific weapon recommendation. Patch 1.0.1 moderately reduced Burer HP; a later publisher announcement lists a fix for a Burer instant-kill issue on Stalker difficulty. Check the publisher’s Steam announcements.

What changes the difficulty of a mutant fight?

Difficulty setting

GSC says Master Difficulty makes “Mutants and NPCs [are] much more deadly” and resources scarcer. Master Difficulty requires starting a new campaign, so it is not a mid-playthrough toggle. The developer’s statement describes Master Difficulty specifically; it should not be generalized to every setting. See GSC’s Expedition update showcase.

Game version

Patch notes show why old guides can mislead. Patch 1.0.1 changed Bloodsucker damage, gun protection, and regeneration, and reduced Controller and Burer HP. Update 1.6 later improved Chimera combat behavior and reduced Pseudogiant HP. Those are dated changes, not a full description of every detail in the current version. The publisher’s announcements page includes Patch 2.0.6 and later fixes, including the Burer issue noted above. View S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 publisher announcements.

Weapon choice and resources

The ammunition and weapon suggestions in the table come from a third-party guide, not publisher testing. Your difficulty, available ammunition, weapon condition, and the version you play can affect how useful a recommendation is. The official notes cited here do not establish a universal number of rounds needed to kill any of these mutants.

How to use older mutant guides

  • Check the guide’s publication or update date against the version you are playing.
  • Use weapon suggestions as starting points, not fixed recipes or verified shot counts.
  • Do not infer a precise health or armor ranking from a patch note that reports only a change.
  • For current fixes and announcements, consult the publisher’s Steam announcements.
