The first major expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, Cost of Hope, puts Skif back in the lead role and spotlights two faction-linked characters: Zulu of Duty and Mavka of Freedom. Its story unfolds in parallel with the main game, against the fragile balance between the two factions.
Who are the characters in Cost of Hope?
The story-and-characters trailer highlights three figures. GSC Game World has not published a complete cast list, so these are the characters foregrounded in the reveal, not necessarily the expansion’s entire roster.

In its March 26, 2026 announcement on Xbox Wire, GSC Brand Manager Mykyta Horodyvskyi said: “The protagonist of the expansion is Skif, and the events unfold in parallel with the story of Heart of Chornobyl.”
Why do Duty and Freedom matter to the story?
Cost of Hope centers on the long-running conflict between Duty and Freedom. Their opposing views of the Zone give Zulu and Mavka’s affiliations narrative weight.

GSC says a fragile peace between the factions is tied to the D4 Treaty, signed by groups in the Zone before the events of Heart of Chornobyl. The announcement frames player decisions as shaping the story and its consequences.
Where does the expansion take place?
The expansion adds two regions: Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. GSC describes each as a larger territory containing a hub, smaller locations, quests, and activities. Its announcement also says the main story can take dozens of hours; that is the developer’s description, not an independently measured playtime estimate.

Is Cost of Hope out, and what platforms is it on?
Cost of Hope was released on August 20, 2026, according to the official release notice. The March announcement listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, as well as PS5. Store access and edition details can vary by region.
Cost of Hope is the expansion; it is not the free Stories Untold content update. The reveal also does not establish a complete cast roster.
