There is no single universal fix for the original 2007 PC version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Start by confirming your edition, store version, crash timing, and mod status. For most Steam and GOG players, the safest order is: verify the installation, launch without mods, regenerate the configuration, then apply the edition-specific fix that matches the symptom.
Fastest safe fix checklist
- Back up your saves,
user.ltx,fsgame.ltx, and anygamedatafolder. - Verify or repair the installation through Steam or GOG.
- Move or disable mods and test the completely vanilla game.
- Rename
user.ltxand, if present,settings.ltxso the game can regenerate them. - If Steam fails at launch with the documented BugTrap symptom, apply the per-program Mandatory ASLR workaround.
- If you use GOG on a 12th-generation Intel system with integrated graphics, install GOG’s separate compatibility fix.

1. Verify the game files
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Launch the game with all mods disabled.
Steam’s technical-support entry for the original game is associated with App ID 4500: Steam Support.

GOG
In GOG Galaxy, open the game’s installation management options and choose the available verify or repair command. If you installed the game from a standalone installer, reinstall the current GOG build rather than applying a patch made for another distribution.
Do not install a non-Steam patch over a Steam copy. Digital-distribution patches are not automatically interchangeable; consult the distribution-specific patch notes before using one.
2. Reset the configuration
A corrupted or incompatible configuration can crash the game before the menu, when starting a new game, or after changing graphics settings.
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open the original game’s installation and configuration locations using the store-specific paths listed on the PCGamingWiki game page. Do not assume Steam and GOG use identical paths.
- Back up
user.ltxand, where present,settings.ltx. - Rename them, for example:
user.ltx.backupandsettings.ltx.backup. - Launch the game and let it generate fresh files.
- Test at default settings before restoring individual options.
Renaming is safer than deleting: you can restore the backup if the reset does not help. Your custom graphics and control settings will not be preserved automatically.
3. Steam-only: apply the Mandatory ASLR workaround
PCGamingWiki documents a Steam launch failure on Windows 10/11 in which BugTrap reports an error at 0023:000DB95E. For that specific symptom, add an exception for the game’s executable:
- Open Windows Security.
- Go to App & browser control and open Exploit protection.
- Select Exploit protection settings, then Program settings.
- Add or edit
XR_3DA.exefrom the Steam installation folder. - Disable Force randomization for images (Mandatory ASLR) for that executable only.
- Apply the setting and restart the game.
This is a documented workaround, not a guaranteed fix. Do not disable Mandatory ASLR globally, and do not apply this original-game instruction to the Enhanced Edition.
4. GOG-specific compatibility fixes
GOG says its maintained original release is verified for Windows 10 and Windows 11, no longer requires administrator access, removed the old RUNASADMIN compatibility flag, and includes a fix for an occasionally corrupted fsgame.ltx.

That means forcing Run this program as administrator should not be your first step on the current GOG build. If fsgame.ltx appears corrupted, repair or reinstall the current GOG release instead of downloading a random replacement file.
GOG also provides a separate downloadable fix for some 12th-generation Intel CPU systems using integrated graphics. It does not apply to every 12th-generation Intel PC; check the GOG product page and its compatibility downloads if your hardware matches.

It crashes when starting a new game
First reset user.ltx and test without mods. If a clean new game works but your modded installation does not, the problem is likely in the mod, its load order, or an incompatible configuration. Do not copy configuration files from another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.
Only one save crashes
Try an earlier save and then start a new game. If the new game works, the failing save may be corrupted or dependent on a script or mod state that is no longer present. Keep the original save backups; do not overwrite them while testing.
It freezes or crashes when opening the menu
PCGamingWiki documents a one- to three-minute menu freeze associated with the unofficial v1.0008 patch. In the original game, open the console with ~ and enter:

menu_fps_cap 0The documented default is 60 if you need to revert the setting. This workaround is for the unofficial v1.0008 scenario; that patch may itself introduce the problem.
It reports an OpenAL or audio-library problem
Repair the installation first. Then check whether a mod, audio enhancement, or replacement OpenAL32.dll was added. Remove conflicting replacements and test vanilla audio. Avoid DLL-fix websites and DLLs copied from unrelated games; mismatched files can create further crashes or security risks. Community OpenAL troubleshooting is collected in this GOG forum discussion, but it is not official support.
Mod troubleshooting and ZRP
If the crash appeared immediately after installing a mod, treat the mod as the first suspect. Close the game, move the installation’s gamedata folder somewhere safe, and verify the clean game. Reinstall the mod only after the vanilla copy works, following that mod’s exact version and installation instructions.
For a first playthrough that retains the original design while correcting bugs, the Zone Reclamation Project (ZRP) is the most suitable escalation. It is designed as a lightweight, vanilla-preserving bug-fix project rather than a major overhaul.
- Install and test the unmodded game.
- Download ZRP from the maintained project page or its ModDB listing.
- Read the included documentation.
- Copy its
gamedatafolder into the game’s base directory as instructed. - Enable the
gamedatadirectory if the installed build requires it. - Start a new test game before relying on old saves.
ZRP 1.09 XR3a was listed as an experimental release dated June 22, 2026, at approximately 5.92 MB. Choose the project’s stable release where available if reliability is your priority. ZRP can reduce many original-game problems, but it is not a guaranteed cure for every engine, save, hardware, or mod conflict.
Protect and restore your files
- Back up the save directory before changing anything.
- Back up
user.ltx,fsgame.ltx,settings.ltxwhen present, and the completegamedatafolder. - Rename files rather than deleting them during the first reset.
- Do not overwrite a clean installation with a complete modpack while diagnosing a vanilla crash.
- After the game generates a new configuration, compare it with the backup before restoring settings.
Save compatibility is not guaranteed after adding ZRP or any other mod. Always test old saves separately from a new game.
When compatibility mode is worth testing
Windows XP compatibility mode appears in older community guides, but it is not a universal first-line fix. Test it only after verification, configuration reset, and mod removal have failed. It is especially inappropriate as an automatic step for the current GOG build, which GOG says no longer requires administrator access or its old administrator compatibility flag.

If the crash remains, record:
- The final lines of the BugTrap log.
- The exact executable named.
- Whether it occurred at startup, while loading, when opening the menu, or during play.
- Steam, GOG, retail, or another edition.
- Every installed mod.
- The last change made before the crash.
BugTrap does not imply one universal cause. The underlying problem can be a damaged save, malformed configuration, incompatible mod, missing or replaced dependency, engine limitation, or Windows and graphics-driver interaction.
Original game versus Enhanced Edition
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl – Enhanced Edition is a separate 2025 PC release, not a compatibility patch for the 2007 game. It has different files, requirements, and troubleshooting procedures. If that is the title in your library, use its own support and configuration guidance rather than applying instructions for XR_3DA.exe, the original game’s paths, or the Steam ASLR workaround.

Switching editions makes sense if you want a more modern presentation or the original remains troublesome after a clean installation and configuration reset. Should you buy another copy?
Buying a different edition is not the default fix. Existing Steam owners should first repair their installation and use the documented ASLR workaround only when the symptom matches. For someone buying specifically for the original game, GOG’s evidence-backed advantages include a maintained, DRM-free build verified for Windows 10/11 and access to the original plus Enhanced Edition. Players seeking modernized presentation should consider the Enhanced Edition as a separate product. The lowest-cost repair path is verification, configuration reset, and—if desired—the free ZRP project.
