salrtl.dll is a private runtime file from Servant Salamander, now called Altap Salamander, rather than a normal Windows component. The safest fix is to restore the matching Salamander installation or plug-in from ALTAP, not to download a loose DLL or copy one into System32.
What this file actually does
salrtl.dll supplies runtime functions used by Servant Salamander and compatible Salamander plug-ins. Its embedded description, “User-Generated Microsoft (R) C/C++ Runtime Library,” can be misleading: it identifies a runtime associated with Salamander, but does not prove that Windows supplies the file or that the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable contains it.

The file normally sits beside the Salamander executable or inside the relevant plug-in location. It is not normally expected in either:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
The exact error depends on the program and Windows version. You may see messages such as:
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- “The program can’t start because salrtl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “salrtl.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading salrtl.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because salrtl.dll was not found.”
- “salrtl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The message may come from Salamander itself or from a utility launched through a Salamander plug-in. That distinction matters because reinstalling the host program may not replace a separately installed, incompatible plug-in.
Causes and the fix that matches each symptom
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Salamander stopped launching after cleanup or uninstall activity | The installation is incomplete or damaged | Reinstall the same compatible Salamander edition |
| Salamander opens, but one plug-in utility fails | The plug-in is missing its runtime or is from another generation | Reinstall the plug-in made for that Salamander release |
| The file disappeared after a security alert | Antivirus quarantine or a false positive | Check Protection history and verify the file’s source |
| A 32-bit utility fails after an x64 installation | Architecture mismatch | Restore the x86 application and matching plug-in |
| The message says the DLL is invalid or contains an error | Corruption, wrong architecture, or another missing dependency | Replace the complete matching package and inspect dependencies |
| Several unrelated Windows programs fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM and SFC after repairing Salamander |
| The error started after a driver or hardware utility update | A plug-in or helper program may have another missing dependency | Identify the calling executable and update its supported software |
Fix 1: Reinstall the matching Salamander package
This is the most reliable repair when salrtl.dll is missing, damaged, or in the wrong folder.
ALTAP provides separate x86 and x64 Altap Salamander packages. The x86 edition can run on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, while the x64 edition requires 64-bit Windows. Choose the edition that matches the failing application, not simply the type of Windows installed.

- Close Salamander and any utility launched from it.
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- On the Processes tab, look for Salamander or the affected plug-in utility.
- Select a remaining process and choose End task.
- Note whether the failing program is a standalone Salamander executable or a plug-in utility.
If you still have another working copy of Salamander, open Help and inspect its version information. If the program will not open, check the installation folder name and any installer or backup records you have.
Reinstall from ALTAP
- Use ALTAP’s official Altap Salamander downloads page.
- Select the Salamander edition intended for your installation.
- Choose x86 for a 32-bit Salamander or plug-in and x64 for a 64-bit installation.
- Download the installer from ALTAP.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- If the wizard offers a repair or overwrite choice, repair the existing installation first.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Launch Salamander before opening any plug-in utility.
Do not install a newer release over an old plug-in and assume compatibility. Preserve the existing installation or back up its plug-in and configuration folders before removing anything.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if Salamander opens without the salrtl.dll message and the affected plug-in also starts normally. If Salamander opens but the plug-in still fails, continue with the compatibility check below.
If setup reports success but the file is immediately absent again, do not repeatedly reinstall. Check antivirus quarantine, disk health, and the installation folder permissions.

Fix 2: Match salrtl.dll and salrtl9.dll to the plug-in generation
ALTAP’s SDK documentation distinguishes the older salrtl.dll runtime from the newer salrtl9.dll runtime. Salamander 2.5x and 3.x plug-ins are not interchangeable because of this runtime change.
That means a missing-file message can be caused by a version mismatch even when Salamander itself is installed correctly.
Check whether the host and plug-in belong together
- Open the Salamander installation folder.
- Find the folder containing the failing plug-in.
- Look for the plug-in’s documentation, version information, or installer name.
- Check whether the plug-in was copied from an older Servant Salamander installation.
- Check whether the plug-in was installed separately from the current Salamander package.
- Remove or disable the incompatible plug-in temporarily.
- Start Salamander again.
If Salamander works after the plug-in is disabled, reinstall that plug-in using the package intended for the installed Salamander generation. If the plug-in is essential and no compatible release is available, restore the older Salamander environment it was designed for rather than mixing files from different releases.

Do not rename salrtl9.dll to salrtl.dll, and do not rename the older file in the opposite direction. The names represent different runtime generations, not interchangeable copies.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, cleanup operation, or detection. A quarantine event does not by itself prove that salrtl.dll was malware, but you should verify its provenance before restoring it.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the event associated with
salrtl.dll. - Review the detected path and the action taken.
- Compare the path with your known Salamander installation folder.
- Restore the file only if it came from the official ALTAP installer, matching installation media, or a known-good backup.
- Update security definitions.
- Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain the DLL. If the file repeatedly disappears, leave it quarantined until you confirm the installer’s source, check its digital signature where available, and investigate whether the installation has been modified.
If restoring the file makes Salamander work temporarily but the file disappears again, reinstall the complete official package instead of copying the file repeatedly.
Fix 4: Confirm the application architecture
A 32-bit plug-in generally needs the 32-bit runtime supplied with its compatible Salamander package. An x64 DLL is not a replacement for a 32-bit DLL, even if both have the same filename.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications, so this check alone does not identify the failing executable’s architecture. Use the Salamander package, plug-in documentation, or the executable’s properties to determine whether the program is x86 or x64.
Then reinstall the matching ALTAP package:
- Use the x86 package for a 32-bit Salamander or compatible 32-bit plug-in.
- Use the x64 package for a 64-bit Salamander and compatible x64 plug-in.
- Do not copy an x64
salrtl.dllinto a 32-bit program folder. - Do not use a DLL from another Salamander generation simply because its filename matches.
If the error changes from “missing” to “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” suspect the wrong architecture or a damaged file.
Fix 5: Check for another missing dependency
Sometimes Windows names salrtl.dll because it is the first dependency it cannot load. After restoring it, the error may change to name another DLL. That is useful information, not a failed repair.
If the remaining error mentions Microsoft C/C++ runtime files, use Microsoft’s official latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Microsoft lists current packages and older Visual C++ 2005–2013 packages separately, and the package architecture must match the application.

Installing the latest Visual C++ package is not the definitive repair for salrtl.dll. Microsoft’s redistributable documentation does not identify salrtl.dll as one of its files, so reinstall Salamander first.

Fix 6: Restore the exact file from a trusted source
Manual copying can be appropriate, but only in a narrow situation. Use the file from one of these sources:
- The matching official Salamander installer
- The same-version installation media
- A known-good backup from the same machine and architecture
Copy it into the directory expected by the Salamander executable or plug-in. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Windows normally searches the application directory and other defined locations according to its DLL search order. Putting a private application DLL into a system directory can create conflicts and does not repair the original installation.
Avoid generic DLL download sites archives. A loose download may contain malware, the wrong Salamander generation, the wrong architecture, a damaged file, or a DLL that depends on other files you still do not have. It can also conceal the real problem, such as a partially removed plug-in or a failing disk.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for normal Salamander runtime repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry point used by components such as COM or ActiveX controls. A runtime DLL such as salrtl.dll is not normally registered that way.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 salrtl.dll
It may produce an entry-point or registration error, which does not mean that Windows needs a different copy in System32.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when symptoms point to Windows
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and Windows-protected system files. They should not be expected to recreate a private third-party salrtl.dll.
Use them when several unrelated Windows applications are failing, Windows reports broader component problems, or the Salamander installation repair exposed evidence of system corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Microsoft documents this process in its guide to repairing a Windows image with DISM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test Salamander.
Microsoft explains the command in its System File Checker documentation.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but salrtl.dll is still missing, that result is expected for a third-party runtime. Return to the matching Salamander installer rather than searching Windows folders for the file.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC does not show what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repair actions are handled by the full version, but reinstalling Salamander remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Consider System Restore
System Restore can help if salrtl.dll worked recently and a restore point predates an uninstall, cleanup action, or failed update. It is not the first choice when the official Salamander installer is available.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may affect applications and settings installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace the need to install a compatible Salamander version if the host and plug-in are mismatched.
Fix 10: Update a related driver only if the failing utility depends on one
A Salamander plug-in may launch a hardware utility, imaging tool, archive component, or other program with its own dependencies. If the error occurs only when that helper utility starts, identify that executable before changing drivers.
Use Device Manager only when the affected program is clearly tied to a device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if an update is installed.
Do not expect a driver update to supply salrtl.dll. It is relevant only when the plug-in utility has a separate hardware or driver problem.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
When identifying stale drivers manually involves checking many device vendors and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, and it should not replace reinstalling the Salamander package that owns salrtl.dll.
If the file exists but still will not load
A present file can still fail because it is corrupted, the wrong architecture, blocked by security software, or dependent on another missing DLL.
Work through these checks:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check its location. It should be in the Salamander or plug-in directory, not a Windows system folder.
- Compare the location with the executable that reports the error.
- Check whether the file came from the matching installer.
- Confirm that the plug-in and host belong to the same Salamander generation.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Restart the program after each change.
- If the message changes, record the new DLL name.
- Reinstall the complete package if the file appears damaged or has an unexpected source.
If only one Windows user profile experiences the problem, test Salamander from a fresh Windows profile. A per-user plug-in or configuration path may be directing the program to an incorrect file.
If reinstalling the exact compatible package still fails, identify the calling executable and inspect its dependency chain with a trusted diagnostic method. The visible salrtl.dll message may be secondary to another missing dependency.
Frequently asked questions
Is salrtl.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with Servant Salamander and Altap Salamander, so it should normally be restored from the relevant application or plug-in package.
Is salrtl.dll the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not necessarily. Its description refers to a C/C++ runtime, but ALTAP documents it as part of Salamander’s private runtime. Microsoft’s current redistributable package should not be treated as a replacement for it.
What is the difference between salrtl.dll and salrtl9.dll?
They belong to different Salamander runtime generations. Older 2.5x plug-ins may expect salrtl.dll, while newer compatible software may use salrtl9.dll. They are not interchangeable by renaming.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Restore it to the Salamander or plug-in directory from the matching official package. Copying a private application DLL into a system folder can cause additional conflicts.
Should I run regsvr32 salrtl.dll?
Usually not. salrtl.dll is a runtime DLL, not normally a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Reinstall the matching application instead.
Can I download salrtl.dll from a DLL website?
You should not. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong version and architecture, and they often leave the damaged Salamander installation or incompatible plug-in untouched.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why did installing Visual C++ not fix the error?
The Microsoft redistributable supplies Microsoft runtime libraries, but salrtl.dll is associated with Salamander’s private runtime. A different missing dependency may require Visual C++, but this file normally requires the correct Salamander or plug-in package.
Will SFC replace salrtl.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not usually restore a third-party Salamander runtime.
What if the error returns after reinstalling?
Check antivirus quarantine, confirm x86 versus x64 architecture, remove incompatible old plug-ins, and investigate disk errors or repeated file removal. If the file remains present but fails to load, inspect the complete dependency chain rather than replacing it with an unrelated copy.
