wfxiif32.dll is missing. This application may fail with: “This application has failed to start because WFXIIF32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
The file is the “Fax HAL” component of Symantec Fax Starter Edition, also known as WinFax Starter Edition. It was historically distributed with older Microsoft Office and Outlook releases, so it is not a normal Windows system DLL.

What is wfxiif32.dll
wfxiif32.dll is a legacy application file identified internally as “Fax HAL.” It belongs to Symantec Fax Starter Edition and related WinFax components that were integrated with older versions of Microsoft Outlook and Office.

It is not a verified Windows component. You should not normally copy it to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or register it with regsvr32.
The error usually means that an old WinFax component still starts, but its DLL was deleted, quarantined, moved, or left behind on another computer. A documented example involved WTNSETUP.EXE attempting to load the file after an incomplete WinFax removal and migration.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original fax software
This is the safest and most likely fix if you still need WinFax or fax integration in Outlook.
Recommended Free Tools
If WinFax appears in Windows installed apps
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for WinFax, Fax Starter Edition, or a related Symantec entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and try the action that previously produced the error.
Windows does not expose Repair for every classic desktop application. If the option is missing, use Control Panel instead.
If it is a classic desktop program
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the WinFax or Fax Starter Edition entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the repair completes but the DLL error remains, uninstall the fax software, restart the computer, and install it again from the original licensed Office or WinFax media. Do not use a separately downloaded copy of wfxiif32.dll.
Older Office installers may list Fax Starter Edition as an Outlook feature. If the installer provides a feature tree, select the fax component and choose Run from My Computer or the equivalent local-install option. The exact wording depends on the Office release.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if:
- WinFax opens without the missing-file message.
- Outlook no longer displays the error when fax functionality is used.
- The boot-time message disappears.
- The fax printer or related application starts normally.
If the installer cannot run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, compatibility may be the real limitation. An old modem driver, printer driver, or Outlook integration component may not work on a modern system even when the DLL is restored.

Fix 2: Remove the orphaned startup reference
If you no longer use WinFax, restoring the DLL is unnecessary. The correct fix is to remove the component that still tries to load it.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries mentioning WinFax, Fax, Symantec,
WTNSETUP.EXE, or an unknown publisher. - Select a clearly related entry.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup item stops it from launching, but it does not remove the underlying program. If the error disappears, uninstall the associated software through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Check Windows services
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for a service clearly associated with WinFax, Symantec, or the old fax software.
- Double-click the service to inspect its Path to executable.
- If the path points to the old fax installation, set Startup type to Disabled.
- Select Stop, then Apply and OK.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable unrelated services based only on a similar name. If you cannot identify the service, leave it unchanged and investigate the file path first.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that mention WinFax, Symantec, Fax, or
WTNSETUP.EXE. - Open a suspected task and check the Actions tab.
- Disable the task if its action points to the obsolete fax installation.
- Uninstall the related application if it is still listed.
Avoid deleting registry keys blindly. Old Office and Fax Starter Edition installations used registry locations that do not necessarily apply to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may have removed a legacy DLL. That does not automatically mean the file should be restored. An old application file can be unsafe, corrupted, or incompatible.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving WinFax, Symantec, or
wfxiif32.dll. - Open the detection to view its original path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if you are confident it came from your original, legitimate installation and the detection is a false positive.
- Prefer reinstalling the complete application instead of restoring one isolated DLL.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar download directory, or an unexpected system location, do not restore it. Remove the associated software and run a full scan.
Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after uninstalling WinFax, moving software, or installing another program.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Close, then Next and Finish if the restore point is appropriate.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can change applications, drivers, and Windows configuration. If restoring the old software brings the error back, uninstall it cleanly or remove its startup entry.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate wfxiif32.dll, because this is a third-party fax application file. Run them when other Windows symptoms exist, such as damaged system features, update failures, or unexplained Windows corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM should complete successfully before SFC is run. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and check the original problem. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after Windows Update has installed pending updates.
When checking Windows manually, the difficult part is often knowing which corruption was found and whether repeated DISM and SFC runs changed anything. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing detected issues, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the owning fax application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
Updates will not provide a modern version of wfxiif32.dll, but they can resolve broader compatibility and Windows servicing problems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check Windows Update again until no further updates are offered.
If the problem is limited to an old WinFax installation, updating Windows alone will not repair the missing application file.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error involves fax hardware
A printer, modem, or fax device can cause a separate startup failure. It does not change the identity of wfxiif32.dll, but an old WinFax installation may depend on hardware drivers that no longer function correctly.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Modems, Ports, and Sound, video and game controllers, depending on the hardware involved.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Read the status under the General tab.
- Use Driver > Update Driver only when a supported driver is available.
- If the device was recently changed, use Driver > Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the fax application.
Do not install a random driver merely because it mentions fax, modem, or 32-bit support. On modern Windows, replacing obsolete fax hardware or software may be more reliable than forcing an old driver to load.
Manually identifying the right driver can mean hunting through several hardware entries and comparing old versions. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and cannot substitute for reinstalling WinFax itself.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why downloading the DLL is not a safe fix
Do not download wfxiif32.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it into a Windows system folder. That approach can fail because:
- The file may be malware or tampered with.
- The build may belong to a different WinFax release.
- The file may have incompatible dependencies.
- The application may be missing several other files.
- A startup entry, service, printer driver, or registry configuration may still be broken.
- Copying an application DLL into
System32orSysWOW64can create a second, misleading installation.
The safe source is the complete original Office or WinFax installation media associated with the software. Restore the owning application rather than treating this DLL as a standalone Windows download.
Should you run regsvr32
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download missing files, repair dependencies, restore startup configuration, or make an incompatible application work.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 wfxiif32.dll
unless the software documentation specifically requires registration and the file is already present in the correct application directory. A “module could not be found” or missing-entry-point message from regsvr32 does not solve the original problem.

A present DLL does not prove that the installation is complete or correct.
Check these points:
- Confirm the file is inside the original WinFax or Office application directory, not a Windows system folder.
- Check whether antivirus is blocking the entire application.
- Repair or reinstall the complete fax package.
- Look at the error window or Event Viewer to identify the executable calling the DLL.
- Check whether the caller is
WTNSETUP.EXE, an Outlook component, a service, or another old launcher. - Verify that the application is not being started from a copied or migrated folder.
- Run the program with its original installer configuration rather than moving individual files between computers.
- Test compatibility settings only for the application executable, not for random DLL files.
To inspect the caller:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Review an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Note the faulting application and path.
The public evidence for this file comes from older Windows and Office-era software. It does not establish that Fax Starter Edition is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
32-bit and 64-bit Windows considerations
The 32 in the filename suggests a legacy 32-bit component, but it is not a reliable architecture specification for every release. Do not assume that a 64-bit replacement exists or that placing the file in SysWOW64 will fix the application.
On 64-bit Windows:
- A 32-bit application normally needs its own files in its application directory.
System32is not a general-purpose location for 32-bit application DLLs.SysWOW64is not a safe destination for manually copied files.- Old fax, modem, and printer drivers may be incompatible even if the main application launches.
- Outlook integration may fail because the old add-in or setup program is unsupported.
If reinstalling from the original media fails, use a supported modern fax solution or keep the legacy software isolated on a compatible older system rather than copying individual files into Windows.

Is wfxiif32.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a normal Windows system DLL. It is associated with Symantec Fax Starter Edition and WinFax components distributed with older Office and Outlook releases.
Which program needs wfxiif32.dll?
The file belongs to legacy Symantec Fax Starter Edition or related WinFax software. An old startup executable, service, printer component, or Outlook integration may request it.
Can I download wfxiif32.dll separately?
You should not. A separate file may be the wrong build, unsafe, or insufficient to repair the rest of the installation. Use the original complete application installer or remove the orphaned reference.
Will SFC fix this error?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while wfxiif32.dll is a third-party application component. Run SFC only when Windows corruption is also suspected.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Keep application DLLs with the application that owns them. Copying this file into System32 or SysWOW64 can introduce the wrong architecture or create misleading search paths.
Why does the error appear at startup?
A WinFax or Fax Starter Edition startup entry, service, scheduled task, or Outlook integration component may remain after the software was incompletely removed or transferred from another computer.
What if I no longer use WinFax?
Uninstall remaining WinFax or Fax Starter Edition components, then disable the related startup item, service, or scheduled task. Once the orphaned caller is removed, the DLL error should stop.
Is there a modern Microsoft replacement DLL?
There is no verified current Microsoft redistributable for this file. Windows repair tools do not manufacture it, and modern Office installations should not be expected to restore this obsolete fax component automatically.
Quick Recap
Prevent the error from returning
- Uninstall WinFax through its installer instead of deleting its folder manually.
- Do not migrate an old application by copying only its program directory.
- Keep the original installation media and license information if the software is still required.
- Review the caller before restoring a quarantined DLL.
- Avoid DLL download sites utilities and random system-folder copies.
- Remove obsolete startup entries after uninstalling legacy software.
- Keep Windows and supported hardware drivers updated.
- If the software cannot run reliably on current Windows, replace the fax workflow instead of repeatedly restoring isolated files.
