Meta’s SAM 3D is a real image-to-3D research release, but it is not a one-click “any image to production-ready STL” application. The SAM 3D family includes SAM 3D Objects, which reconstructs objects and scenes from a single image, and SAM 3D Body, which estimates a human body mesh and pose. You can try both through Meta’s browser Playground, while local inference is available for advanced users who have Linux, an approved checkpoint, and— for SAM 3D Objects—an NVIDIA GPU with at least 32 GB of VRAM.
The result can be a textured mesh suitable for further work, or a Gaussian-splat representation intended for visualization and neural rendering. An STL for 3D printing is normally a downstream conversion, followed by mesh repair and slicer validation. For games and VFX, SAM 3D is best treated as a rapid asset-generation or blockout tool, not an automatically game-ready or production-ready solution.

What is SAM 3D?
SAM 3D is Meta’s family of single-image 3D reconstruction models, introduced on November 19, 2025. Meta released the models alongside research papers, code, checkpoints, datasets, and evaluation tools rather than as a conventional standalone desktop application. The official release consists primarily of:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- SAM 3D Objects: reconstructs selected objects and scene layouts from a single image, including geometry, appearance, pose, and the relationships between objects.
- SAM 3D Body: estimates a human body mesh, body pose, hand and foot pose, keypoints, camera information, and body-shape parameters from an image.
- Segment Anything Playground: Meta’s browser interface for experimenting with the models.
- Open repositories and checkpoints: local inference code, model weights, documentation, datasets, and benchmarks.
Meta says SAM 3D and SAM 3 also support Facebook Marketplace’s “View in Room” feature, which lets users visualize home-decor products in their space. That does not make SAM 3D a general-purpose CAD, scanning, or 3D-printing application. See the official Meta announcement and the SAM 3D Objects repository for the release’s scope.

As of August 9, 2026, the latest dated updates visible in the official Objects repository are the June 1, 2026 encoder-weight release and the June 2, 2026 release of the SAM 3D Artist Objects dataset and Hugging Face leaderboard. The original checkpoints, paper, and web demo were released on November 19, 2025. Repository labels and Playground controls can change, so check the official pages before following an older tutorial.
Try SAM 3D in the official browser demo
The easiest way to test SAM 3D is Meta’s hosted Playground. Use these Meta URLs rather than assuming that an unrelated website with “SAM 3D” in its name is affiliated with Meta:
The current interface may rename buttons or move controls, but the workflow is generally:
- Open the Objects or Body demo.
- Upload a suitable image.
- Select or isolate the object, or identify the person in the image.
- Run the reconstruction.
- Rotate and inspect the result from viewpoints that were not present in the input photo.
- Download the available result if the current Playground exposes an export control.
- Open the result in Blender or another 3D application if you need printing, game-engine import, or VFX cleanup.
Do not assume that every browser result has the same file options as the local pipeline. In particular, the official local quick-start example saves a Gaussian-splat PLY, while the underlying inference pipeline can also produce a GLB mesh output.
What kind of 3D output does SAM 3D make?
“3D model” can mean several different things here. The output type matters more than the marketing label.
| Output | What it is | Useful for | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
.ply Gaussian splat |
A point- or splat-based representation of appearance and structure. | Scene viewing, neural rendering, and compatible Gaussian-splat viewers. | Automatically a conventional polygon mesh or a printable solid. |
.glb |
A binary glTF container that can hold a textured polygonal mesh and related scene data. | Blender, web viewers, digital asset inspection, and game-engine experimentation. | Guaranteed clean topology, correct scale, or production-ready geometry. |
.stl |
A triangulated surface format generally used by 3D-printing workflows. | Single-material geometry sent to a slicer. | A native substitute for the original textured GLB. STL does not preserve the complete textured appearance. |
| SAM 3D Body output | Human vertices, keypoints, camera data, pose parameters, hand and body pose, and shape parameters. | Human avatars, pose analysis, character previsualization, and research. | A universal object reconstruction or automatically rigged game character. |
The official Objects pipeline separately decodes a mesh and a Gaussian representation. Its inference result exposes glb and gs outputs; the basic demo demonstrates:
output["gs"].save_ply("splat.ply")
When mesh decoding is enabled and the active pipeline returns the mesh result, the pipeline documents GLB export:

Can SAM 3D convert any image?
No. A single photograph does not contain the back of an object, hidden surfaces, internal cavities, true scale, material thickness, or exact measurements. It also cannot directly reveal whether a dark area is a hole, a shadow, or painted detail. When pixels are missing, SAM 3D uses recognition and contextual information to infer a plausible shape. That can produce a convincing image from new angles, but it is not the same as measuring the object.
Meta designed SAM 3D Objects for natural images containing clutter, occlusion, small objects, indirect viewpoints, and unusual poses. That is an important strength, but it should not be confused with guaranteed recovery of unseen geometry. Meta also lists moderate output resolution, distortion on complex objects, and weak physical reasoning about contact and interpenetration among its limitations.
Images that usually give the model a better starting point
These are practical workflow recommendations, not guarantees from Meta:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Use one clear primary subject that occupies a substantial part of the frame.
- Choose an image with a strong silhouette and visible outer contours.
- Prefer moderate, diffuse lighting over harsh shadows.
- Avoid severe motion blur, heavy compression, and distracting overlays.
- Use a front or three-quarter view that exposes the object’s overall form.
- Reduce overlap with other objects wherever possible.
- Expect more trouble with transparent, mirror-like, highly reflective, extremely thin, or heavily patterned objects.
- For people, include as much of the body as possible and avoid severe cropping.
A better input improves the reconstruction, but no single-view method can recover information that the camera never captured.

- 【Low Shrinkage and High Precision】ELEGOO photopolymer resin is specially designed for reducing volume shrinkage during the Photocuring process, which ensures the high precision of the print model with smooth finish.
- 【Low Volume Shrinkage】Low shrinkage and good stability reduce volume shrinkage during the curing process. Therefore, after cleaning and post-curing, the molded prints will not be noticeably deformed or cracked over a long period of time.
- 【Low Viscosity & Good Fluidity】With excellent fluidity, the resin can quickly reflow to the area between model and release film, which improves the printing success rate, and reduces printing time.
- 【Safe and Low Odor】ELEGOO standard photopolymer resin is specially formulated with less odor and a very pure and bright color. There is less pungent smell during printing, thus maintaining a freshening printing environment.
- 【Bright and Stunning Colors】With high quality pigments and photo-initiators inside ELEGOO UV-Curing resin, the models printed with resin have a very pure and stunning color effect just like an artwork.
Objects versus Body: which SAM 3D model should you use?
SAM 3D Objects
SAM 3D Objects accepts an image and a selected or masked object. It can reconstruct:
- Object geometry.
- Texture or visual appearance.
- Object pose.
- Scene layout.
- Multiple selected objects through the provided multi-object workflow.
This makes it the relevant model for props, furniture, decorative objects, room scenes, concept assets, and real-world images with clutter. “Scene reconstruction” does not mean the system has physically simulated the room. Meta says the current system predicts objects one at a time and is not trained to reason fully about physical interactions such as contact or interpenetration. A reconstructed chair can float above a floor, intersect a table, or sit at an implausible angle until you correct it manually.
SAM 3D Body
SAM 3D Body is a separate human-reconstruction model. It estimates a human mesh and body configuration, including:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- 3D body vertices and 3D keypoints.
- 2D keypoints projected into the source image.
- Camera translation and focal length.
- Body-pose, hand-pose, and shape parameters.
- Feet and hand pose.
It uses Meta’s Momentum Human Rig (MHR), rather than treating a person as an arbitrary object. MHR separates skeletal structure and surface shape and includes body identity, articulation, facial-expression parameters, and multiple levels of detail. This makes SAM 3D Body useful for avatars, pose estimation, sports and motion analysis, character previsualization, and human-object alignment research.
It is not a universal image-to-3D model. People are processed individually, relationships between multiple people are not automatically solved as a complete scene, and Meta notes that hand accuracy does not surpass specialized hand-only pose systems. MHR is also not automatically a finished production rig for every digital-content package or game engine.
Run SAM 3D Objects locally
Local inference is intended for advanced users and researchers. The official setup guide requires:
- 64-bit Linux with the
linux-64architecture. - An NVIDIA GPU with at least 32 GB of VRAM.
- A Mamba or Conda environment.
- Compatible PyTorch and CUDA dependencies.
- Access approval for the model checkpoints through Hugging Face.
That 32 GB VRAM requirement is a major distinction between the open local release and the browser demo. The code and checkpoints do not require a model subscription fee, but local use can still involve the cost of a suitable workstation or cloud GPU, storage, bandwidth, and setup time.

Official installation commands
The repository recommends installing the main, PyTorch3D, and inference dependencies separately:
# Create the environment
mamba env create -f environments/default.yml
mamba activate sam3d-objects
# Package sources used by the repository
export PIP_EXTRA_INDEX_URL="https://pypi.ngc.nvidia.com https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu121"
# Core/development dependencies
pip install -e '.[dev]'
# PyTorch3D dependencies
pip install -e '.[p3d]'
# Inference dependencies
export PIP_FIND_LINKS="https://nvidia-kaolin.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/torch-2.5.1_cu121.html"
pip install -e '.[inference]'
# Apply the repository's Hydra patch
./patching/hydra
The separate PyTorch3D step exists because of its dependency situation. Use the versions and commands in the repository’s current setup guide rather than blindly substituting the newest CUDA or PyTorch packages.
Download the Object checkpoints
Checkpoint access must be requested and approved. After approval, authenticate with Hugging Face and download the files:
pip install 'huggingface-hub[cli]<1.0'
# Authenticate with a Hugging Face token
hf auth login

Is SAM 3D useful for 3D printing?
Yes, for approximate and decorative prints. No, as a substitute for CAD or measurement when function and accuracy matter.
Good candidates
- Decorative figurines and busts.
- Stylized props and ornaments.
- Simple organic objects.
- Concept models.
- Cosplay references.
- Display pieces where approximate shape is acceptable.
Poor candidates
- Replacement parts requiring exact dimensions.
- Threads, gears, bearings, clips, hinges, and mating surfaces.
- Thin-walled parts or fragile projecting features.
- Objects whose hidden side is essential.
- Transparent, reflective, or highly occluded objects.
- Medical, safety-critical, load-bearing, or otherwise functional components.
These limits follow from the information missing in a single image and Meta’s stated limitations around resolution, complex-object distortion, and physical interaction. The output may look excellent in a viewer while still being unsuitable for a real-world part.
Recommended print workflow
- Generate the object from a clear image and accurate mask.
- Prefer the mesh or GLB result instead of the Gaussian-splat PLY.
- Import the GLB into Blender.
- Apply the required rotation and scale.
- Remove unwanted cameras, scene objects, duplicate geometry, and hidden remnants.
- Inspect the model in solid and wireframe views.
- Enable Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox.
- Run Check All.
- Repair non-manifold edges, holes, bad normals, intersections, degenerate faces, and overly thin areas.
- Add a base or thicken fragile features when necessary.
- Set a real-world size and verify the dimensions numerically.
- Export STL or 3MF.
- Open the file in your slicer and check walls, supports, overhangs, scale, and orientation.
- Preview the sliced layers before sending the job to the printer.
Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox documentation covers checks for manifoldness, holes, normals, intersections, thin geometry, degenerate faces, and overhangs. Do not call a model “print-ready” until it has passed geometry and slicer checks.
STL does not preserve the textured model
STL is a unitless triangulated surface format. It is useful for conventional single-material printing, but it does not retain the complete textured appearance of a GLB. OBJ can reference color and texture information, while 3MF can carry additional manufacturing information such as units, colors, and textures when supported by the application and slicer. Autodesk’s 3D-print export documentation explains these format differences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Use GLB for inspection and textured digital workflows.
- Use OBJ when texture or color references matter.
- Use STL for conventional single-material geometry.
- Consider 3MF when your slicer and printer workflow support it.
Is SAM 3D good for games?
SAM 3D can shorten the distance between a reference photograph and a usable blockout. It is potentially useful for:
- Rapid prop ideation.
- Environment dressing.
- Indie-game prototyping.
- Reference-image-to-blockout workflows.
- Previsualization.
- Generating a starting point for retopology.
It should not automatically be called game-ready. A game asset normally needs some combination of:
- Retopology or polygon reduction.
- Clean UVs.
- Texture baking and PBR material preparation.
- LOD generation.
- Collision meshes.
- Correct pivots, naming, hierarchy, and transforms.
- Engine-specific import testing.
- Rigging and skin-weight work for characters.
The difference is important: SAM 3D can provide a visually useful starting mesh, but a high-detail or textured reconstruction is not automatically efficient, deformable, or correctly organized for Unity, Unreal Engine, or another production engine. Meta discusses gaming and film applications in its announcement, but does not promise that every output meets engine production standards.
Is SAM 3D good for VFX?
SAM 3D is a strong candidate for fast set-dressing references, previsualization, camera and layout exploration, concept development, rough virtual-production assets, and turning a photographed object into a scene element.
It is a weaker choice for hero assets viewed in close-up, exact replicas, deformation-heavy characters without additional rigging, physically accurate simulation assets, or scenes where contact and object relationships must be correct. Meta specifically identifies contact and interpenetration as limitations, so an artist should expect to reposition objects and repair layouts manually.
Rank #4
- 【Both Strength and Toughness with High Promotion】 Compared to the excellent tensile and bending strength of the previous version of ABS-like resin + , Anycubic ABS-Like Resin Pro 2 has strengthened the performance of toughness, increases the elongation at break by more than 100%, and the finished model is much stronger, which can be used to print high-strength and high-toughness models such as structural parts, industrial prototype parts, and fixtures.
- 【Performance far Superior to ABS-Like Resin】 Anycubic ABS-Like Resin Pro 2 is developed with a high elongation at break which can even reach to 35~40%. Compared to ABS-like resin +, it has increased by 114%.
- 【High Fluidity, High Success Rate】 Low viscosity and high flowability shorten curing time and make models easier to form. Anycubic ABS-Like Resin Pro 2 enables fast reflow, reducing delamination in model print. At the same time, the backplane adhesion is better, effectively reducing the risk of printing failure.
- 【High Precision with Low Shrinkage】With an even lower shrinkage rate, the chance of distortion is decreased. Achieve top-notch precision and display sharp, vivid details in your prints.
- 【Low Odor for Pleasant Printing】 Our low-odor formula reduces discomfort for those sensitive to smells, creating a more pleasant printing environment.
For people, SAM 3D Body may be more useful than SAM 3D Objects because it estimates a parametric body representation and pose. However, a professional character workflow may still require topology work, facial setup, rig conversion, retargeting, skin-weight correction, and manual cleanup.
How accurate is a single-image reconstruction?
Accuracy depends on what you mean:
- Visual resemblance: often the most useful measure for a concept prop or background asset.
- Pose alignment: particularly relevant to SAM 3D Body and human figures.
- Geometric measurement: not something a single photo can guarantee without known scale or additional views.
- Physical plausibility: limited when surfaces are hidden or objects touch and overlap.
Meta reports that SAM 3D Objects was trained with a human- and model-in-the-loop data engine using nearly 1 million distinct images and approximately 3.14 million model-in-the-loop meshes. Meta also reports at least a 5:1 win rate over other leading models in head-to-head human-preference tests on real-world objects and scenes, and says optimized inference can produce full textured reconstructions in a few seconds. Those are Meta-reported claims, not an independent universal ranking or a five-times improvement in geometric accuracy. See Meta’s launch post and the SAM 3D paper abstract.
The SA-3DAO benchmark
Meta’s SAM 3D Artist Objects dataset contains 1,000 image/3D-object pairs. The collection covers objects ranging from churches and ski lifts to animals, household objects, and rare items. The meshes were created by artists and aligned to their source images as expert human references.
Recommended Free Tools
- 100 objects are released for testing and development.
- 900 objects are withheld for the benchmark competition.
- The dataset is licensed CC BY-NC.
The SA-3DAO dataset page makes the benchmark useful for comparing research systems, but it does not prove that an ordinary consumer photograph will yield a printable, dimensionally correct, or production-ready asset.
Body model evidence
The SAM 3D Body repository lists two checkpoint families: DINOv3-H+, with approximately 840 million parameters, and ViT-H, with approximately 631 million parameters. It reports results on 3DPW, EMDB, RICH, COCO, LSPET, and Freihand. Those figures belong to Meta’s released checkpoints and should be interpreted using the definitions of each dataset and metric in the official Body README, rather than treated as a direct comparison with every image-to-3D tool.
What does “free” mean?
SAM 3D is free in some important senses, but “free” does not mean unlimited or costless:
- The official Playground is available for experimentation.
- Meta provides code and checkpoint materials without a model subscription fee.
- Local Objects inference requires demanding hardware, with at least 32 GB of NVIDIA VRAM and 64-bit Linux.
- Cloud GPU time, storage, bandwidth, setup, and troubleshooting can still cost money.
- Checkpoint access requires Hugging Face approval and authentication.
- A third-party hosted service using a similar model can impose its own pricing, download limits, privacy policy, and commercial terms.
Several sites use names such as “SAM3D” or “SAM 3D.” Do not treat sites including sam-3d.com, sam3d.org, or sam3d.ai as Meta’s official application without independently verified affiliation. Meta’s official entry points are the repositories and aidemos.meta.com links above.

Licensing and commercial use
The official SAM 3D Objects and Body repositories use Meta’s SAM License, not a generic MIT or Apache-2.0 license. The license grants a limited, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, distribute, copy, modify, and create derivative works from the SAM Materials, subject to its terms.
Important obligations and restrictions include:
- Distributed SAM Materials and derivatives must remain under the agreement’s terms.
- A copy of the agreement must accompany redistribution.
- Use must comply with applicable laws, privacy and data-protection rules, sanctions, and export controls.
- The license prohibits certain military, warfare, nuclear, espionage, and illegal-weapons uses.
- Meta supplies the materials and outputs “as is.”
- The user is responsible for deciding whether an output is suitable and lawful.
- Meta may modify the license, with continued use constituting acceptance of the modified terms.
Read the current Objects SAM License and Body SAM License before redistributing models or building a commercial product. Do not describe SAM 3D as unconditionally “commercially free,” and do not assume that the model license automatically transfers rights in a generated character, brand, photograph, or product.
The MHR repository itself is marked Apache-2.0, but that does not automatically change the license applying to SAM 3D Body checkpoints or every other SAM 3D material.
You also need rights to the source image and to any depicted person, copyrighted character, logo, artwork, or product. Model licensing does not transfer copyright in the input image or permission to use someone’s likeness or personal data.
Troubleshooting common problems
“The local setup will not run.”
Check the fundamentals first:
- Are you using 64-bit Linux?
- Does the NVIDIA GPU have at least 32 GB of VRAM for SAM 3D Objects?
- Are PyTorch and CUDA versions compatible with the repository?
- Did PyTorch3D install through the separate
.[p3d]step? - Did you apply
./patching/hydra? - Is there enough disk space for the checkpoints?
- Did Hugging Face approve your checkpoint request?
- Did you run
hf auth login?
If the hardware cannot meet the requirement, use the official Playground or a cloud GPU rather than trying to force the local package onto an unsupported laptop.
Best Value
- Higher Heat-Resistance: The 3D printed models with ABS-Like 3.0 Plus maintains its physical shape and mechanical properties at higher temperatures (up to 55 celsius grad), which effectively reduces the risk of material failure due to high temperatures.
- High Strength and Impact Resistance: Printed models are tough, bending without breaking easily and can withstand certain levels of tension and stress, featuring high hardness and toughness. Resin products can be tapped and drilled without cracking.
- High Precision and Low Shrinkage: Ensures high model forming accuracy with smooth surfaces and clear printing details and features low shrinkage rates.
- Good Fluidity: ELEGOO ABS-Like Resin 3.0 Plus Resin exhibits excellent fluidity, allowing it to flow back quickly to fill and cure the surface of printed models, which enhances the success rate of model printing by reducing the release force after resin curing.
- Fast Curing: Balances model performance and detail while improving printing speed. Shortens curing time, enhancing the efficiency of LCD 3D printers.
“Blender does not show a normal mesh.”
You probably opened a Gaussian-splat PLY. A Gaussian representation is not equivalent to a conventional polygon mesh. Use the pipeline’s GLB or mesh output for Blender mesh editing, or open the PLY in a compatible Gaussian-splat viewer.
“The front looks right but the back is wrong.”
That is a normal single-view failure mode: the back was inferred rather than observed. Try a clearer three-quarter input, isolate the object more carefully, use multiple source images or a multi-view workflow when available, and remodel the hidden side manually if it matters.
“The model floats or intersects another object.”
Meta identifies contact and interpenetration as limitations of SAM 3D Objects. Separate and reposition objects in Blender, reconstruct important objects individually, and treat the scene output as a layout reference rather than a physically authoritative scene.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“The STL fails in the slicer.”
Common causes include open boundaries, non-manifold edges, flipped normals, intersecting shells, zero-area faces, very thin features, unapplied scale, and unsupported overhangs. Run Blender’s 3D Print Toolbox, choose Check All, repair the geometry, add thickness or a base where necessary, export again, and validate the result in the slicer.
“The print is the wrong size.”
STL is unitless, so the receiving application must interpret its scale. Set the intended dimensions in Blender or your slicer and verify them numerically before printing. Never rely on the model’s apparent size in a viewport.
“The asset is too heavy for my game.”
High detail is not the same as game readiness. Decimate or retopologize the asset, bake textures, rebuild UVs where needed, create LODs and a collision mesh, remove hidden geometry, correct the pivot, and test the import in the target engine.
SAM 3D compared with alternatives
| Tool or workflow | Best starting point | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SAM 3D Objects | Selected objects in cluttered, natural images; research and scene-aware reconstruction. | Demanding local hardware, checkpoint access, and substantial cleanup. |
| SAM 3D Body | Single-person body, pose, hands, feet, and parametric human reconstruction. | Not a general object model or automatically finished character rig. |
| TripoSR | Fast, isolated single-object reconstruction with a simpler open workflow. | Less focused on SAM 3D’s natural-scene and separate human-reconstruction capabilities. Its official model is MIT licensed, and its documented hosted workflow produces a textured GLB. |
| TRELLIS | Technical experimentation with meshes, radiance fields, and 3D Gaussians from image or text prompts. | More research-oriented and representation-flexible than a straightforward print workflow. |
| Hunyuan3D 2.1 | High-fidelity asset and PBR-material experimentation. | Check its current hardware requirements, model access, and license before adoption. |
| Meshy | Browser-first image-to-3D workflow with direct exports such as FBX, OBJ, USDZ, GLB, STL, and BLEND. | Hosted service; model access, download limits, privacy, and commercial terms vary by plan. Its free tier does not provide unlimited access to every current model. |
| Photogrammetry, scanning, or CAD | Exact physical parts, known dimensions, and measurement-critical work. | Requires multiple views, scanning hardware, measurements, or manual modeling rather than one convenient image. |
Should you use SAM 3D?
Use the official Playground if you want to see what single-image reconstruction can do without installing a research stack. Use SAM 3D Objects if you need a starting asset from a cluttered real-world image and are comfortable with masks and cleanup. Use SAM 3D Body when the subject is a human and pose or body parameters matter more than arbitrary object geometry.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose another workflow first if you need a dimensionally accurate replacement part, clean quad topology, a guaranteed STL or 3MF with no repair, a fully rigged character, or exact hidden geometry. In those cases, a dedicated hosted image-to-3D service, multi-view capture, scanning, or CAD is more appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SAM 3D export STL directly?
SAM 3D’s official local quick-start example saves a Gaussian-splat PLY, not an STL. The Objects pipeline can produce a GLB mesh when mesh decoding is enabled, and that mesh can then be exported or converted to STL in Blender or another 3D package. The STL should be checked for watertightness, non-manifold edges, normals, thin walls, scale, and slicer compatibility before printing.
Is SAM 3D completely free to use?
The official Playground is available for experimentation, and Meta provides code and checkpoints without a model subscription fee. Local SAM 3D Objects inference requires 64-bit Linux, an approved checkpoint, and an NVIDIA GPU with at least 32 GB of VRAM. Hardware, cloud GPU time, storage, bandwidth, and setup can still cost money. The models are distributed under Meta’s SAM License, so commercial and redistribution use requires reading that license.
Can SAM 3D make a game-ready asset from one photo?
It can create a useful prop or character starting point, but it does not guarantee game-ready topology, UVs, efficient polygon counts, LODs, collision geometry, pivots, materials, or rigging. Expect retopology, texture baking, cleanup, and engine testing before production use.

SAM 3D Objects reconstructs selected arbitrary objects and scenes. SAM 3D Body is specialized for humans and estimates a body mesh, pose, keypoints, camera data, and MHR body parameters. Body is not a general replacement for Objects, and Objects is not a specialized human rig-recovery system.
Is a single-image SAM 3D model dimensionally accurate?
Not reliably. A single image does not reveal hidden surfaces, true scale, internal cavities, or exact thickness. SAM 3D infers missing geometry from visual and contextual clues, which is useful for visual assets but unsuitable as a measurement or metrology system without additional references and manual verification.
The Bottom Line
SAM 3D is worth trying, but think of it as a powerful reconstruction starting point rather than a finished 3D-printing or game-development product. The browser Playground is the practical entry point. Local SAM 3D Objects is aimed at users with Linux, approved checkpoints, and high-end NVIDIA hardware. For printing, export the mesh—not merely the Gaussian PLY—then repair and validate it in Blender and your slicer. For games and VFX, budget for retopology, materials, layout correction, LODs, collision meshes, and possibly rigging. When exact dimensions or reliable hidden geometry matter, use CAD, scanning, or multi-view capture instead.
