Sandcarving is a form of abrasive blasting that etches or carves a design into a surface. A stencil or photomask shields the areas meant to stay smooth; abrasive strikes the uncovered areas to create the pattern. The term can also refer to the machine used for this work, usually a purpose-built blasting cabinet or sandcarving system.
What is sandcarving?
In sandcarving, abrasive is propelled against a workpiece to alter its exposed surface. The design comes from a mask: covered areas are protected, while open areas are etched or carved. The result follows the stencil rather than being drawn freehand by the machine. Sandcarving.com’s FAQ and Rayzist Photomask describe this basic process.
Glass and crystal are familiar applications, but cited examples also include marble, stone, acrylic, ceramic, granite, metal, plastic, bricks, and river rocks. These are examples of possible substrates, not a guarantee that every material will work with every abrasive or machine. Check compatibility for the specific workpiece and system.
How the process works
- Prepare the design and surface. Choose a pattern and apply photomask film or another suitable stencil to the workpiece.
- Open the areas to be carved. Cut or expose the design in the mask, leaving the portions that should remain smooth covered.
- Blast the exposed design. Use suitable sandcarving equipment and abrasive to impact the open areas. The mask protects the rest of the surface.
- Remove the mask and inspect. Once blasting is complete, peel away the mask and check the pattern.
Aluminum oxide and silicon carbide are common abrasive choices in the cited specialist sources. The correct abrasive and operating setup depend on the material and equipment; follow the machine’s manual rather than assuming an abrasive is safe because it is used in another system.

What equipment and materials are involved?
The central equipment is an abrasive-blasting cabinet or purpose-built sandcarving system. A working setup may also involve an air source, dust collection, abrasive, photomask material and, depending on the method, equipment to expose and wash out the mask. Rayzist describes sandcarving systems and photoresist film, while IKONICS Imaging lists its CrystalBlast sandcarvers and related resources.

Safety: use the manual for your specific system
Abrasive blasting creates dust, and compressed-air equipment can pose serious hazards if handled improperly. The Rayzist 1924 Sandcarving System manual gives equipment-specific instructions, including: “NEVER use silica sand or abrasive containing silica with this equipment.” It identifies aluminum oxide or silicon carbide as recommended abrasives for that system.

The same manual says: “The dust collector should be attached and operating whenever your sandcarving cabinet is in use.” It also instructs users to keep the cabinet door closed during blasting and warns of serious injury from improper handling of the pressure pot and compressed air. These warnings apply to the Rayzist 1924 system; for another machine, follow its own manual and safety requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What sandcarving is—and is not—established to do
Rayzist Photomask’s 2026 Product Guide calls sandcarving “one of the simplest and most accessible methods” for personalizing or decorating glass, crystal, marble, stone, and other surfaces. That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent comparison of techniques. The practical point is that the process uses a mask and abrasive impact to produce a patterned etched or carved surface; suitability depends on the workpiece, mask, abrasive, and equipment.
