Battlefield 6 design director Shashank Uchil’s point is that a map’s size should serve the combat and play styles it is built for—not force designers to fill empty acreage. He also connects good map design to destruction that changes players’ choices, rather than spectacle that quickly becomes routine.
What Uchil meant by “scale is not everything”
In an August 8, 2025 interview with Video Games Chronicle, Uchil put it plainly: “Scale is not everything. Right?” He argued that adding acreage does not, by itself, create a good map. A very large space can pressure designers to fill it with content, making the experience feel more like an open world and forcing compromises elsewhere.

That is an argument about purpose, not a rule that every map should be small. Uchil described designing a range of maps for different players and combat roles, including infantry, tanks, helicopters and jets. The useful question is whether a map gives those activities room to work together—not simply how many kilometres it covers.
How to judge a map beyond its size
A map’s scale matters in relation to the situations it supports. Infantry need routes, cover and useful engagements; ground and air vehicles need space in which to operate. A design that serves one activity well may not serve another in the same way, so a varied map lineup can offer more than trying to make every map satisfy every play style.

EA’s current Battlefield 6 page, accessed October 5, 2026, describes the game as combining infantry and vehicle combat, class-based squad play, multiple modes and tactical destruction. EA also lists four core classes: Assault, Support, Engineer and Recon. Those are the publisher’s descriptions of the game’s features, not an independent assessment of how well each map balances them.
Why destruction should change decisions
Uchil also framed destruction as a question of consequence. In the VGC interview, he discussed how different materials respond to damage and how debris left behind can alter the space players move through. For example, rubble can create a route to a higher floor. Destruction is then more than a visual effect: it can change cover, access and the choices available during a match.

He contrasted that kind of evolving damage with a large landmark collapse that players watch happen repeatedly. “The issue with that is it gets stale very fast,” he said of repeated spectacle, adding that the team preferred more organic destruction. The distinction is not that dramatic events have no place; it is whether the environment continues to matter after the spectacle ends.

The design trade-off behind the quote
Uchil’s comments describe a balance between breadth and focus. Expanding a map can support vehicle movement or longer sightlines, but it can also create space that needs filling and shift attention away from the intended combat. Destruction can make a familiar area change over time, but indiscriminate damage may remove useful structure and tactical choices. In both cases, the design goal is not maximum size or maximum destruction; it is a battlefield whose spaces and changes give players meaningful options.
