Scarlet Rot is a buildup-based status effect in Elden Ring. Exposure raises a buildup meter; when it reaches its threshold, Rot activates and drains your HP over time. Preserving Boluses and cleansing incantations can cure active Rot, while Immunity slows buildup before the effect takes hold.
How Scarlet Rot works
Scarlet Rot is an in-game status ailment, not a real-world illness. Contact with a Rot source adds buildup. If buildup reaches its threshold, the status activates and causes ongoing HP loss for a period.

That distinction matters when choosing a defense: stopping buildup can delay or prevent activation, but it does not reduce the damage once active Rot is already affecting you.
How to cure active Scarlet Rot
Use Preserving Boluses
Preserving Boluses are a craftable consumable that cure Scarlet Rot and clear current buildup. The community-maintained item reference lists Armorer’s Cookbook [6] and crafting materials as part of their crafting information; check the current game version for exact acquisition and recipe details.

Use a cleansing incantation
Flame, Cleanse Me and Law of Regression are also listed as in-game cures. Their requirements may be sensitive to game version, so verify them in your current game before building around a particular spell. These are incantations rather than consumable items, and using them depends on having the spell and meeting its requirements.
How to resist buildup
Immunity is the relevant defense against Scarlet Rot buildup. Attributes including Vigor and defensive gear contribute to Immunity; a higher Immunity value slows how quickly buildup accumulates. It does not lessen ongoing HP loss after Rot has activated.

- Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
Think of Immunity as prevention and boluses or cleansing spells as cures. Which option is most practical depends on your build, what you have available, and where you are traveling; there is no universally best countermeasure for every situation.
Scarlet Rot in the lore
The Hefty Rot Pot description gives Rot a fictional, supernatural origin: “Rot is one of the divine elements of the outer gods, and eats away at life like a vicious plague.” This is in-game lore, not a real-world medical claim.

Rot buildup from the environment
A community-maintained game reference notes a narrower traversal issue: after rolling through a ground-based Rot source, buildup may continue until you clean your character with Soap. If buildup persists after leaving the source, Soap may help clear that lingering exposure; it is not a substitute for curing active Rot with a bolus or cleansing incantation.
