Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Schedule I does not have one universal PC-crash fix. The right solution depends on whether the game closes before the menu, crashes while loading one save, fails when saving or sleeping, or freezes Windows completely. The safest starting order is to return to the default public branch, verify the installation, remove mods and overlays, back up your saves, and then test the official alternate Mono branch if the normal IL2CPP build still crashes.
Several updates have improved saving, loading, rendering, performance, and stability, but the patch notes do not claim that every crash has been eliminated. This guide uses the available branch and patch information checked on August 10, 2026. Steam’s branch metadata and the official development announcements do not show every player on one identical build, so confirm the branch and version displayed in your own Steam client.
Quick fixes to try first
- Open Schedule I’s Steam properties and select the default public branch for normal play.
- Restart Windows and Steam, then use Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Remove MelonLoader and all mods for the first clean test.
- Disable overlays and monitoring utilities such as Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner, and RivaTuner.
- Back up the entire save folder before changing branches or editing files.
- Test a new save. If only one old save crashes, treat it as a save problem rather than immediately reinstalling the game.
- If the default build still crashes, test Steam’s
alternatebranch, which uses Mono instead of IL2CPP. - If nothing works, collect
Player.log, your branch and version, hardware details, and exact reproduction steps for TVGS support.
Identify the crash before changing anything
Use the symptom that best matches what you see. This prevents a save repair from being used on a graphics-driver problem, or a CPU workaround from being used on a corrupted save.
| Symptom | Best first path |
|---|---|
| Steam says Preparing to launch, then the game closes | Verify files, update Windows and GPU drivers, disable nonessential software, and test the default public branch. |
| The TVGS or Unity splash screen appears, then the game exits | Remove mods and MelonLoader, verify files, test the alternate Mono branch, and try one graphics API launch option. |
| The main menu works, but loading a save crashes | Back up the save folder, test a new game, try an older backup, and inspect Player.log. |
| The game crashes when sleeping or saving | Protect the save, check file-writing permissions and security software, and avoid repeatedly overwriting the only copy. |
| The game crashes after 10–15 minutes and freezes the whole computer | Treat it as a possible CPU, GPU-driver, thermal, RAM, power, or Windows stability problem. A cautious CPU-affinity test is an unofficial workaround. |
| Only the beta branch crashes | Return to the default public branch. Beta builds may be unstable. |
| Only the modded installation crashes | Remove MelonLoader and every mod, then test the unmodified game before reinstalling compatible mods. |
| Multiplayer crashes or hangs while joining | Make sure every player is using the same branch and a compatible build, then test an unmodded session. |
Steam’s own launch guidance recommends restarting the computer, updating Windows and drivers, verifying files, disabling nonessential software, and checking system requirements. Those are useful baseline checks, but they do not distinguish a broken save from a system freeze. See Steam’s official launch troubleshooting guide.

Check the branch and game version first
Schedule I has separate Steam branches identified in the available depot metadata: public, alternate, beta, and alternate-beta. The normal build uses IL2CPP. TVGS introduced the alternate build with Mono as a crash-focused workaround. The beta branches may contain newer fixes or optimizations, but they can also be unstable.
Steam’s client may label the menu Game Versions & Betas or simply Betas:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Schedule I and choose Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas or Betas.
- For normal troubleshooting, select the default public version, usually shown as None or the public branch.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading the selected build.
- Launch the game and record the version shown on the title screen.
Check the Schedule I branch metadata if you need to understand the available branch names, but use the version and branch shown by your own Steam client as the authority. The official v0.4.6 announcement identifies that release as an Open Beta, while branch metadata shows different update histories for public and beta builds. Do not assume that every player is on v0.4.6 or that the newest beta is the normal public release.
Which branch should you use?
| Branch | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
public |
Normal play, standard performance, and ordinary multiplayer. | The default IL2CPP backend may reproduce a backend-specific crash. |
alternate |
The public build repeatedly crashes, especially near startup or during ordinary play. | Mono may perform worse. Mods must support Mono, and multiplayer players may need the same branch. |
beta |
You specifically want to test the newest development fixes or optimizations. | It may be unstable and can introduce new bugs or compatibility problems. |
alternate-beta |
You are deliberately testing both the beta code and Mono backend. | It has the highest compatibility complexity and should not be the default repair step. |
For multiplayer, matching the branch and compatible build is a practical requirement. A player on public IL2CPP should not be expected to join without problems when another player is using Mono or a beta build.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify the installation
File verification repairs missing or damaged game files. It does not repair a corrupted save, remove MelonLoader, undo a backend mismatch, or fix a GPU or hardware problem.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Schedule I, or open its game page and click the gear icon.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish before launching the game again.
Steam warns that one or more files can fail verification because they are local configuration files. That result can be normal. If antivirus software quarantined a game file, restore or allow-list the file through your security product and run verification again; see Steam’s antivirus and file-restoration guidance.
Test a completely unmodified game
A clean test is especially important if you use MelonLoader. Schedule I’s Mono and IL2CPP builds are not interchangeable for mods, and a mod compiled for one backend can fail on the other. A clean launch does not prove that the base game is bug-free; it shows that a loader, mod, or overlay is a likely contributor.
- Exit Schedule I completely.
- Remove or disable MelonLoader and all installed mods. For a meaningful test, remove the loader as well as individual mod files.
- Temporarily disable overlays and performance-monitoring tools, including Steam, Discord, NVIDIA or AMD, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and similar utilities.
- Restart Steam.
- Use the default public branch.
- Start a new game before loading the affected save.
After the unmodded game is stable, reinstall only mods that explicitly support the selected branch, game build, and backend. The Schedule I mod troubleshooting documentation recommends including those details, along with the MelonLoader version, installed mods, logs, and reproduction steps when diagnosing a mod problem.
Schedule I crashes on startup
If the game closes before the main menu, the save file is less likely to be the immediate cause. Work through these steps in order:
- Return to the default public branch and confirm the in-game version.
- Restart Windows and Steam.
- Verify the installation.
- Remove MelonLoader, mods, overlays, and monitoring tools.
- Install current Windows and graphics drivers from Microsoft, NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Do not rely on a driver version from an old troubleshooting article.
- Try the Direct3D launch tests below.
- Test the alternate Mono branch.
Steam lists Schedule I as a Windows PC game requiring a 64-bit operating system. The store lists Windows 10 64-bit, a 3 GHz four-core CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 580 as minimum requirements; recommended hardware is a 3.5 GHz six-core CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and an RTX 3060 or RX 6700. DirectX 11 is listed, with 8 GB of minimum storage and 10 GB recommended. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee smooth performance or eliminate crashes, particularly on systems near the minimum. Check the Steam technical support page for Schedule I for the store’s current requirements.
Test the Unity graphics API options
Unity documents these Windows player arguments:
-force-d3d11
-force-d3d12
To test them:
- In Steam Library, right-click Schedule I and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Enter
-force-d3d11in Launch Options. - Launch and test the game.
- If nothing changes, remove the option and test
-force-d3d12by itself. - Remove the launch option after testing.
Steam lists DirectX 11, so -force-d3d12 is an optional rendering experiment, not a requirement or guaranteed solution. The documented Unity arguments are -force-d3d11 and -force-d3d12; do not treat third-party shorthand such as -dx11 or -dx12 as equivalent primary instructions. A community thread reports trying the D3D12 option, but this is community troubleshooting rather than a universal TVGS fix. See Unity’s command-line argument documentation.
Try the official alternate Mono branch
If the clean public build still crashes, alternate is the most important Schedule I-specific workaround. TVGS describes it as functionally identical to the normal version but using Mono instead of IL2CPP. It is less performant, but generally handles errors better and is less prone to crashing.

- Open Game Versions & Betas or Betas.
- Select
alternate. - Allow Steam to download the branch.
- Launch Schedule I and test both the affected save and a new save.
Mono is a workaround, not a guarantee. It may reduce performance, will not repair corrupted save data, and will not necessarily prevent a driver crash or a complete system freeze. Mods must match the Mono backend, and multiplayer users may need to move to the same branch. The backend’s purpose and trade-offs are documented in TVGS’s alternate Mono build announcement.
Back up Schedule I saves before changing files or branches
Do this before switching branches, testing Steam Cloud, or editing any save file. The commonly documented Windows location is:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowTVGSSchedule ISaves
Your Steam-account folder is normally inside that directory:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowTVGSSchedule ISaves<SteamID>
To make a backup:
- Close Schedule I.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowTVGSSchedule ISavesand press Enter. - Copy the entire relevant SteamID folder to Documents, another drive, or an external backup location.
- Give the copy a date-based name, such as
Schedule I Saves - 2026-08-10. - Leave the original untouched while testing.
References for the Windows save location include PCGamingWiki and this save-location walkthrough. Do not delete a save before making a copy, and do not repeatedly overwrite the only copy of a save that crashes during saving or sleeping.
When only one save crashes
If the menu opens and a new game works, but one existing save crashes during loading, the save or an object/state inside it becomes a stronger suspect than the installation or GPU. It is possible for the base game, a particular save, and a mod to overlap, so test methodically.
- Back up the complete
Savesfolder. - Launch the unmodified game.
- Start a new game and test movement, loading, and saving.
- Try an older save or a known-good backup.
- Compare the result with the affected save.
- Inspect the end of
Player.logafter reproducing the failure.
If new and older saves work but one save consistently fails, avoid reinstalling repeatedly: a reinstall does not repair that save. Keep the backup and report the save-specific reproduction to TVGS.
Experimental Appearance.json workaround
One community report links a narrow save-on-save crash to Appearance.json. This is not an official TVGS repair and is not a universal corruption fix. It may do nothing or affect appearance data, so use it only as a reversible experiment after making a full backup.
The reported path is:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowTVGSSchedule ISaves<SteamID>SaveGame_1PlayersPlayer_0Appearance.json
- Close the game.
- Copy the affected save somewhere safe.
- Rename
Appearance.jsontoAppearance.json.bakrather than immediately deleting it. - Launch the game and load the save.
- Test saving.
- Restore the original file if the test does not help or causes unwanted changes.
The only evidence for this method is a community report, so do not present it as a confirmed developer fix.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Crashes while saving or sleeping
A crash triggered by saving or sleeping points toward save data, file-writing permissions, cloud synchronization, or a state created during play. Prioritize preservation over repair.
Check the game’s permissions warning
TVGS added a file-writing permissions checker and in-game guidance for save-related write problems in Post-launch Patch #4, v0.3.3f13. Look for a permissions warning on the main menu and make sure your Windows account can write to:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowTVGSSchedule I
Also check whether Windows Security, antivirus software, OneDrive, or another backup utility is blocking, quarantining, locking, or restoring files in that folder. Prefer a targeted allow-list or Controlled Folder Access exception over permanently disabling antivirus protection. If security software removed a game file, correct that conflict and run Steam’s file verification again.

Use Steam Cloud only as a controlled diagnostic
Some community users have temporarily disabled Steam Cloud while testing save crashes. This is an unverified diagnostic step, not proof that Steam Cloud causes all save failures.
- Make a manual local backup first.
- Temporarily disable Steam Cloud for Schedule I.
- Test the local save without allowing synchronization to replace it.
- Keep the known-good backup separate from the live save.
- Re-enable synchronization only after deciding which local or cloud copy is authoritative.
Do not let Steam Cloud overwrite a known-good local backup with an older or corrupted copy.
When the entire PC freezes
A crash to desktop is an application failure. A black screen, locked input, looping sound, or total Windows freeze that requires a hard reboot is a system-level symptom. It can involve the game, but it can also expose instability in the GPU driver, CPU, temperatures, RAM, power delivery, motherboard firmware, or Windows.
If Windows errors or system instability remain after the game-specific checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional way to scan for and address common Windows issues, but it is not a substitute for driver, temperature, hardware, or save testing.
First update Windows and the GPU driver, remove overclocks or undervolts temporarily, check CPU and GPU temperatures, and see whether other demanding games produce the same freeze. Review Windows Event Viewer after reboot. Avoid repeated forced shutdowns while the game is writing a save because a hard power-off can worsen save or file corruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUnofficial CPU-affinity workaround
Some players report that limiting Schedule I’s CPU affinity with Process Lasso prevents a complete freeze after roughly 10–15 minutes. This is not an official TVGS fix and specifically does not repair save crashes.
- Install Process Lasso from its official source.
- Launch Schedule I.
- Alt-tab to Process Lasso and find
Schedule1.exe. - Right-click the process.
- Choose CPU Affinity → Always → Select Cores.
- If you have an Intel hybrid CPU, cautiously test a limited set of performance cores rather than all cores.
- Retest and restore the default affinity if the problem remains or performance gets worse.
Do not blindly copy a suggestion such as five or six P-cores to every CPU. AMD processors and non-hybrid Intel CPUs have different topologies. Use this only as a controlled test; a complete system freeze still warrants hardware and driver diagnosis. The workaround comes from a Steam community report and a community follow-up, not TVGS.
What the official patches changed
The development history supports targeted improvements, not the claim that Schedule I crashes are universally fixed:
- Post-launch Patch #4, v0.3.3f13: added a file-writing permissions checker and in-game guidance for save-related write problems, while also improving multiplayer stability and error reporting. See the official announcement and patch summary.
- Post-launch Patch #6, v0.3.3f15: introduced the alternate Mono build for players experiencing crashes. See the patch record.
- v0.4.4 Weather Update: included rendering and performance work that TVGS reported as producing approximately a 5–10% FPS improvement in its testing. It also addressed employee stuttering, an initial vehicle-pathfinding frame spike, and other loading or performance issues. See the official announcement archive.
- v0.4.6 Open Beta: added light-source culling, shadow optimizations, staggered property-content culling, reduced garbage-collection allocation, staggered repeating checks, audio-compression changes intended to reduce runtime CPU spikes, texture and shader reductions, and a fix for a CPU and memory spike caused by audio sources subscribing to events. See the official announcement and patch details.
These are documented stability and optimization changes. They do not prove that every startup, loading, save, mod, driver, or whole-PC-freeze problem is fixed.
Schedule I crashes with mods
Mod troubleshooting should begin by proving whether the unmodified game works:
- Back up saves.
- Remove MelonLoader completely, not just one mod.
- Remove every mod and restart Steam.
- Use the public branch and test a new save.
- If the game is stable, confirm each mod supports the selected game version, branch, and backend.
- Reinstall compatible mods one at a time and keep the save backup separate.
Switching from IL2CPP to Mono without changing the mods can create a new crash. The reverse is also true. Match the backend and mod build before treating the branch as defective. For a support report, list the MelonLoader version, every installed mod, the branch, the game version, and the final section of Player.log.
Reinstalling: when it helps and when it does not
Reinstalling can repair a damaged installation, but it should come after verification, a clean mod test, branch testing, driver updates, and a save backup. It does not necessarily remove saves, external mod loaders, or third-party files. It does not fix Windows permissions, a corrupt save copied back through Steam Cloud, a branch mismatch, or CPU, GPU, thermal, RAM, power, and driver instability.

- Does the game crash before the main menu? Clean out mods and loaders, verify files, update Windows and GPU drivers, disable overlays, test D3D11 and D3D12 one at a time, then try the alternate Mono branch.
- Does the menu work but only one save crashes? Back up saves, test a new game, try an older backup, inspect

- Does only a beta or modded branch fail? Return to public, match the backend and mods, and test the clean game before making further changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the alternate Mono branch permanently fix Schedule I crashes?
No. TVGS describes the alternate Mono build as less prone to crashing and generally better at handling errors, but it may perform worse and cannot repair corrupted saves, driver problems, or full-system freezes.
Is v0.4.6 the current Schedule I version for everyone?
Not necessarily. The official announcement identifies v0.4.6 as an Open Beta, while Steam branch metadata shows different public and beta histories. Check the branch and version shown in your Steam client.
Will reinstalling Schedule I delete or repair my saves?
Do not rely on either outcome. Back up %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowTVGSSchedule ISaves first. Reinstalling can repair game files but does not generally repair a corrupted save, permissions issue, cloud conflict, or hardware problem.
Why does Schedule I crash only when I sleep or save?
That pattern points more strongly toward save data, file-writing permissions, security software, cloud synchronization, or a state created during play. Back up the save, test a new game, check permissions, and inspect Player.log before editing anything.
The Bottom Line
There are documented workarounds for several Schedule I crash categories, but no single fix covers every PC. Verify the public installation, test without mods, protect your saves, and use the alternate Mono branch for persistent default-build crashes. A one-save failure calls for save recovery; a whole-PC freeze calls for driver and hardware investigation. If the problem survives those tests, send TVGS your branch, hardware, reproduction steps, and Player.log rather than repeatedly reinstalling or deleting saves.
