SCHiM gives a shadow-spirit an unusual route through the world: it must leap from one shadow to another to reunite with its human. That idea makes for a striking visual identity and moments of playful environmental problem-solving. It also puts the same basic movement loop at the center of nearly every level, so the changing scenery does not always prevent the journey from feeling repetitive.
What is SCHiM?
SCHiM is a 3D platform game about a small shadow-spirit separated from its human. To get back, it travels through animated urban and rural environments by jumping between shadows. Nintendo’s listing describes it as a game about “jumping from shadow to shadow” and interacting with a “relaxing and lively environment”; that is the publisher’s description, rather than an independent assessment. Nintendo’s Switch listing presents the game’s premise and player count.

The rule shapes both the game’s appeal and its limits. A shadow is not just decoration: some can be activated to affect objects or characters, changing the scene or creating a way forward. Level and Game Designer Nils Slijkerman said the team wanted players to “explore and experiment with various objects and their shadows.” The developer’s design commentary gives examples such as honking a truck horn to move a cat, inflating an air dancer to make a route, and using a ticket machine to create a traffic jam the player can cross. These examples show the intended range of interactions, though they do not establish how consistently varied the full game feels.
Why does SCHiM look beautiful?
The game builds its identity from the contrast between flat, graphic-looking shadows and colorful, animated surroundings. Its launch announcement says palettes shift with the setting, time of day, and mood, and describes levels inspired by Dutch and European urban and rural locations. Small environmental stories and lively details give each place character. The launch announcement describes that visual approach.

- A story of a person losing their shadow - A schim is the soul and spirit of an object or living being. Everything in the world has one, and it should never be separated! You need to find your way back to the human you belong to, before it's too late!
- Unique 3D platforming - You can only move in the shadows, so you'll need to find clever ways to leap into the shadows of animated objects and moving beings to use them as your pathways.
- A beautiful abstract world - The color palette changes in each level to capture the setting, time of day and mood of every location you explore.
- Each level has a story to tell - Each new level has its own living scenery with small stories to uncover, inspired by real Dutch/European cities and rural locations.
That variety matters, but it is not the same as mechanical variety. A new palette, location, or background vignette can make a level feel fresh to look at while the player is still solving the same central problem: finding a safe shadow, making the next jump, and working out whether an object can change the route.
Is SCHiM repetitive?
It can be. The central shadow-to-shadow traversal idea is clear and distinctive, but it also recurs throughout the adventure. When a stretch of play asks the player mainly to locate the next usable shadow and make another jump, the rhythm can become familiar. Environmental interactions offer breaks from that pattern, but their presence does not automatically make every sequence feel different.

- An everyday story that is a little spirit, watching over
- Skim can only be moved in shadows of people or objects
- Guide yourself back to the original location with timely jumping from shadows to shadows
- Skim means "spirit" or "flickering at the end of your eyes". Skims exist in every shadow and have one thing in the world. It will never come apart
- From the moment the owner was born, Skim has been watching over various scenes in life. One day one skim was separated from the owner's body. Will you return safely without being too late?
The strongest way to judge the repetition is to separate the game’s sources of variation:
- Interactions: Shadows that affect objects or characters can turn observation into a small puzzle and alter the route.
- Places and mood: Changing settings, palettes, and environmental stories refresh the view and the context.
- The core action: Moving between shadows remains the defining traversal constraint, so visual novelty may outpace changes in what the player does.
That makes “just a little too repetitive” a reasonable critical judgment, not a settled fact about every player’s experience. The available Steam snapshot was mixed, but its rating does not explain why individual reviewers responded as they did. The official materials establish the intended mechanics and presentation; they do not prove that the game’s pacing succeeds or fails for everyone.

What platforms is SCHiM on?
The developer lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PC, Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck. The PlayStation Blog announcement confirms the PS4 and PS5 release plan, while the Xbox store listing shows Xbox and related play options. The Nintendo Switch version released July 18, 2024; Nintendo says it is compatible with Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch.
Does SCHiM have co-op?
No multiplayer is established in the available current product details. Nintendo lists one player, and the developer FAQ said multiplayer would not be supported at launch, with the possibility of considering it later. That historical statement is not confirmation that co-op was subsequently added; check the relevant platform’s current listing for any later change.
