Viktor Tóth said in a December 2021 interview that he might stream his rat experiment on Twitch—but only if a rat could stay engaged for longer sessions. The available reporting does not confirm that he ever launched a channel. The original project trained rats to move through a constrained Doom II corridor using motion sensors and rewards; it did not show that they understood or played the game as human players do.
Did Tóth actually start a Twitch channel?
There is no reliable confirmation in the available reporting that Tóth launched or still runs a Twitch channel for the experiment. His comment was a possibility, not an announcement. In a Futurism interview published December 13, 2021, he said: “Yes, I think so. I think it’s a very valid way to monetize a project like this. The only problem is how long the rat can run for.”
The condition mattered: he was talking about streaming if a rat became curious about the game and could sustain a longer session. The interview recounted one run by a rat named Romero lasting 15 minutes. That is an anecdotal maximum, not a typical session length or a validated endurance result.
What did the rats do in Doom II?
The first reported experiment trained three rats to traverse a corridor represented in a Doom II environment. The goal was a specific navigational behavior, not unrestricted play, combat, or demonstrated understanding of Doom’s objectives. “Rats play Doom” is a catchy shorthand for the setup, but it can imply more than the experiment established.

Tóth, a Hungarian software engineer and neuroscientist and a former Feinstein Institutes neuroengineer, described the work as an automated behavioral experiment and an opportunity to explore brain-computer-interface research. The corridor task used externally tracked movement; it was not a demonstrated neural-control interface.
How the original apparatus worked
In Tóth’s 2021 project write-up, a rat was supported in a harness above a large ball mounted on ball bearings. As the rat moved, sensors tracked the ball’s movement. Software translated those movements into movement through the virtual corridor, which appeared on a display. A dispenser delivered sweetened water when the rat performed the desired action, reinforcing corridor traversal.

- Developed by id Software, and originally released in 1993 and 1994, the definitive, newly enhanced versions of DOOM + DOOM II are available as a combined product. Includes Sigil & Sigil II
The project write-up also distinguished between an available game action and a learned behavior: Tóth had implemented a way to shoot, but had not yet reinforced shooting as something the rats would do. That is why claims about the first version should focus on navigation.
What changed in the later version?
A PC Gamer report from December 2025 described a later setup with additional inputs, including a custom paw-operated lever containing a rotary encoder. Tóth was quoted as saying, “The rats successfully learned to navigate the virtual environment and trigger the shooting mechanism.” The report also noted air-puff cues in the updated setup.

This later report describes progress beyond the navigation-focused first setup, but it also preserves an important qualification: habituation took approximately two weeks per rat, and advanced training and full behavioral validation were still incomplete. Tóth said, “Full behavioral validation requires longer training periods.” The later shooting behavior should not be read back into the 2021 Twitch interview or treated as proof of broad gameplay.
What did the setup cost?
In his 2021 write-up, Tóth estimated that his home-built setup cost less than $2,000. He also said development had cost him more than twice the final amount. He compared it with a commercially available alternative costing “north of $70,000,” while cautioning that product quality and testing scope differed. These were his historical estimates and comparison, not a current price survey or like-for-like market test.

How does the experiment relate to brain-computer interfaces?
Tóth’s 2020 Medium post set out neural control as a research direction. That proposal is distinct from the later-described corridor experiment, in which external sensors converted movement into game input. The project therefore illustrated a behavioral-control setup and an ambition to explore brain-computer-interface research; it did not establish that the rats controlled Doom through a neural interface.
