scope.dll errors usually mean an older MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench installation is incomplete, damaged, or missing a quarantined application file. Before changing Windows files, identify which program is requesting scope.dll and check the full path shown in the error.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Answer these questions before applying a fix:
- Does the error appear when launching MultiSIM V6, Electronics Workbench, or another application?
- Does the message identify
scope.dll, or does it say that another dependency could not be found? - What is the complete path shown in the error?
- Did the problem begin after reinstalling Windows, cloning a drive, restoring a backup, cleaning files, or an antivirus update?
- Is the affected program an old 32-bit MultiSIM release rather than a current NI Multisim installation?
- Is
scope.dllmissing from the program’s installation folder? - Is the file in Windows Security quarantine?
Public file metadata describes scope.dll as the “SnapIns Module,” part of MultiSIM V6, developed by Interactive Image Technology Ltd. The same record associates it with SNAPINS.DLL and identifies it as a legacy 32-bit Win32 application DLL. Those details come from third-party metadata rather than an official signed vendor manifest, so do not use the recorded size, version, or filename alone to authenticate a copy.

The filename is not globally unique. If the error points to a different application, use that application’s original installer instead of assuming that MultiSIM is involved.
What the scope.dll error means
You may see messages including:
- “This application failed to start because scope.dll was not found.”
- “The file scope.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: scope.dll.”
- “Error loading scope.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because scope.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load scope.dll.”
- “scope.dll could not be located.”
- “Cannot find scope.dll.”
These messages do not all indicate the same problem.

A missing-file message usually means Windows cannot find scope.dll in the application’s directory or another permitted DLL search location. A “bad image,” “corrupted,” or “not designed to run on Windows” message more often indicates that the file is damaged, incompatible, incomplete, or not the expected binary.
“The specified module could not be found” is ambiguous. Windows may be unable to load scope.dll, or it may have found scope.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies. Replacing the named file blindly can therefore leave the actual problem unresolved.
Fix 1: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old application DLL after a definition update. This is the quickest fix to check, particularly if MultiSIM worked previously and stopped starting after a security scan.
Restore a confirmed MultiSIM file
- Press Windows and type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Filter or review recent events.
- Look for an event naming
scope.dll, MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, or the application’s installation folder. - Open the event and review its path and detection details.
- Do not restore it unless the path belongs to your licensed MultiSIM installation and the file came from trusted installation media.
- If it is clearly the original application file, choose Actions and then Restore or Allow on device, depending on the event shown.
- Scan the restored file and the surrounding installation with Microsoft Defender.
- Start MultiSIM again.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not create a broad antivirus exclusion. Reinstall from clean, licensed media and submit the verified file to the security vendor if a false positive is suspected.
If restoring does not work
If scope.dll is not listed, or MultiSIM still reports an error after restoration, continue with a repair or reinstall. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file site.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the exact MultiSIM installation
For this file, repairing the owning application is safer than replacing a single DLL. MultiSIM V6 is a legacy product, and its files must match the rest of the installation.
Before removing anything, back up:
- Circuit and project files
- Custom component libraries
- License information
- Any installation records or release codes
- User-created templates and configuration files
Try the application’s repair option
Some older installers provide a repair mode.
- Close MultiSIM and any related Electronics Workbench programs.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench entry.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows after the repair finishes.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
If the program starts without the missing-file message, open a sample project and then one of your backed-up projects. If the repair option is unavailable or the error remains, use the complete reinstall procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReinstall from original licensed media
- Back up your projects and licensing information.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in with an account that has administrator rights.
- Insert the original installation disc or mount the original installation image.
- Run the installer from that media.
- Install the same legacy release that originally used the program.
- Apply the program’s original licensing or release-code process.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch MultiSIM and confirm that it opens before restoring custom files.
If the original media is unavailable, contact NI support about legacy MultiSIM 6 installation media and licensing assistance. A current NI Multisim installer should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for the old MultiSIM V6 files.

If the installer cannot find the media
Do not copy scope.dll from another computer unless that computer has the exact same MultiSIM release, architecture, patch level, and trusted installation source. Even then, copying one file may hide a larger incomplete-installation problem.
Ask the software vendor for the original installation media or a supported legacy installer. Keep the affected program’s full path and any license information available when contacting support.
Fix 3: Confirm the file path and architecture
The recorded scope.dll metadata identifies an x86 Win32 DLL associated with a legacy MultiSIM V6 installation. That matters because a 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit modules and dependencies.
Do not assume that a file with the same name is compatible merely because Windows accepts the copy operation.
Check where the program is looking
- Right-click the MultiSIM shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path in Target and Start in.
- Browse to the application’s installation folder.
- Check whether
scope.dllis present there. - Compare the file with the rest of the installation rather than relying only on its filename.
Windows normally searches an unpackaged program’s application directory before system directories. An application-private DLL should therefore remain beside the executable that uses it.
Do not confuse System32 and SysWOW64
Do not copy this application DLL to:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those directories are Windows system locations, not general-purpose storage for missing application files. Their names are particularly confusing on 64-bit Windows: System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither folder is the correct default location for a MultiSIM DLL.
The correct repair is to restore the matching file to the MultiSIM installation directory through the original installer.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
A program can report that a module is missing even when scope.dll exists. The named DLL may depend on another library that Windows cannot load.

- Additional Tips - Please take off the cap before using the test leads. Check the manual for more usage information.
This is especially relevant when:
scope.dllis visibly present- The error says “The specified module could not be found”
- The problem started after moving the program to another computer
- A disk clone or backup restored only part of the installation
- The error changed after manually replacing a DLL
The safest dependency repair is to reinstall the entire MultiSIM release. Do not guess which runtime the file needs. No authoritative dependency manifest establishes a particular Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET version, or driver as required specifically by this scope.dll.
Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error names it
If a diagnostic explicitly names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime:
- Note whether the affected application is 32-bit.
- Download the matching package from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
- For a 32-bit MultiSIM program, install the x86 package even if Windows itself is 64-bit.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MultiSIM again.
Microsoft also provides older Visual C++ packages. Install an older package only when the application documentation or error identifies it. Installing the newest package is not a guaranteed repair for scope.dll.

Fix 5: Do not register scope.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that this MultiSIM application DLL is a COM or ActiveX server.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 scope.dll
If you already tried it and received:
DllRegisterServer in scope.dll failed
that does not prove the file is missing. It usually means the DLL is not intended to be registered that way, the wrong architecture of regsvr32 was used, or the file is damaged.
Use the application’s installer instead. Register a DLL only when the vendor’s instructions explicitly require it and identify the correct registration method.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has wider problems
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore an application-private MultiSIM DLL.
Use them when other Windows programs or system files are also failing, or when Windows itself reports component corruption.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Press Windows.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MultiSIM.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the repair using Microsoft’s current Windows guidance and review the result before reinstalling MultiSIM.

If MultiSIM worked until a recent driver, application, update, or configuration change, System Restore may reverse that change without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the
scope.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test MultiSIM.
System Restore does not replace a missing application file in every case. If the error remains, reinstall MultiSIM from its original media.
Fix 8: Update drivers only for a broader hardware problem
There is no confirmed driver dependency for this scope.dll. Do not begin with Device Manager unless the failure also involves a display adapter, sound device, measurement hardware, or another device used by the application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If related hardware is failing:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the hardware and then MultiSIM.
For an older application, obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer when possible. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while installation of the driver is handled by its full version; driver work is not a substitute for restoring the correct MultiSIM files.
What not to do
Avoid these common but unreliable fixes:
- Downloading a loose
scope.dllfrom an unknown DLL website - Copying the file to
System32orSysWOW64 - Replacing the file with a similarly named DLL from another program
- Installing random Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages
- Running
regsvr32repeatedly - Disabling antivirus protection permanently
- Creating a broad antivirus exclusion
- Deleting unrelated Windows folders
- Assuming a current Multisim installer contains the legacy MultiSIM V6 file
A random DLL may contain malware, may be the wrong version or architecture, or may leave the actual broken installation untouched. The safe sources are the original licensed MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench media and vendor-supported legacy installation assistance.
Quick troubleshooting tree
- The file was quarantined: verify its path, scan it, and restore it only if it belongs to the licensed installation.
- The file is absent: repair or reinstall the exact MultiSIM V6 release.
- The file is present but will not load: reinstall the application and investigate dependencies.
- The error names another runtime: install only the specifically identified Microsoft package.
- The error names a different program: follow that program’s installer and confirm its full path.
- Only Windows components are failing: run DISM first, then SFC.
- The issue followed a recent system change: try System Restore.
- The original media is unavailable: contact NI for legacy media and licensing support.
FAQ
Is scope.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies this scope.dll as a Windows component. It is associated with the legacy MultiSIM V6 application and should normally remain in that application’s directory.

Which program installs scope.dll?
Public metadata identifies it as part of MultiSIM V6, also associated with Electronics Workbench, and developed by Interactive Image Technology Ltd. Because filenames can be reused, confirm the complete path and launching executable.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I download scope.dll from the internet?
No. Use original licensed installation media or vendor-supported legacy media assistance. An unrelated copy can be unsafe, incompatible, or unable to repair a missing dependency.
Is scope.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The available file record identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That record is not an official signed vendor manifest, so the actual file and the application’s architecture should be verified rather than inferred from the filename.
Will installing current NI Multisim fix the error?
Not necessarily. Current NI Multisim is not verified to contain the old MultiSIM V6 scope.dll and should not be presented as a guaranteed replacement.
Do I need to run regsvr32?
Normally, no. There is no evidence that this DLL exports the registration function required by regsvr32. Reinstall the owning application instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The missing module may be a dependency of scope.dll. Reinstalling the complete matching application is safer than replacing individual files.
What is the definitive fix?
For a genuine MultiSIM V6 error, restore a confirmed quarantined file or reinstall the exact licensed MultiSIM/Electronics Workbench release from original media.
